Derby City Charter Beer Festivalhas once again called last

orders for another year and we aredelighted to announce that thefestival was an absolute success.As you may be aware the festivalfaced some challenging times due tothe Assembly Rooms fire. With thetireless effort of the festivalcommittee and the help and supportof Derby Live the event was able totake place entirely outside.The main question many folkpondered and discussed inalehouses in and around Derby onthe build up to the event was ‘Wouldthe festival work entirely in amarquee?’ and now we can simplyanswer ‘Yes’.Thankfully the weather stayed brightfor the majority of the festival andmany visitors enjoyed the suntrap,which was the outside drinking areaof the festival over looking theGuildhall. The inside of the marqueeboasted a total of 307 different beersfrom 112 breweries that provedpopular with the 10,350 visitors whomanaged to consume 33,684 pints.The first beer to sell out was ‘FalstaffHades’ at a shocking 15.4% abv, wecan only guess that there were somesore heads after drinking that!Entertainment was varied fromonlookers being amazed by thedancing talents of ‘Sheffield SteelRapper’ to rocking along to ‘The DarkHorses’.Cider drinkers managed to consume110 tubs whilst the Continental

drinkers drank their way through aselection of 43 different bottledvarieties. Mead drinkers enjoyed acollective of 150 litres. The cheese,chocolate, curry and other food stallssaw a frenzy of happy drinkers alsoenjoying their delights.Drinkers celebrated 50 years ofDerby Mountain Rescue Team, whichwere this year’s festival theme. Dueto generosity of visitors theymanaged to raise a massive total of£2203.32. The British Legion alsoheld a collection and banked£341.14.Prior to the trade session the EastMidlands Champion Beer of BritainRegional Judging took place at thefestival and the results were:Bitter Style CategoryGold: Pheasantry Brewery – Best Bitter3.8%,Silver: Nottingham Brewery –Rock Bitter 3.8%, Bronze: ThornbridgeBrewery – Wild Swan 3.5%East Midlands Champion BeerGold: Peak Ales – Chatsworth Gold4.6%, Silver: Dancing Duck – DarkDrake 4.5%, Bronze: Blue Monkey –Ape Ale 5.4%For anyone who is not aware thefestival is ran entirely by volunteerswho Derby CAMRA would like tosincerely thank. The total number ofworkers was approximately 220. Toput this it into context 4,500 hourswent into running the festival, with theaverage volunteer doing over 20hours… without their help the eventwould not be able to happen so letsraise a glass to them!

Derby MountainRescue Team

ThanksIn this, the 50th Anniversary year of the formation of

Derby Mountain Rescue Team we were honoured to benominated and accepted as the theme for this year’s

summer beer festival. Whilst many people have heardof mountain rescue, not that many are aware that there

is a Derby team or what it actually does. The beerfestival was a fantastic opportunity, not just to

fundraise for our voluntary emergency service, but alsoto spread the word about just what it is the team does

and how it’s “much more than just mountains”.As the festival got into full swing, a selection of team

members helped to man the stand and hold collectionbuckets and we raised over £2,200 during the five days.During the quieter periods, we had a great opportunityto chat to people as many visitors were quite inquisitive

and were surprised that we existed and wanted toknow more. Naturally, there were a lot of jokes made

about the lack of mountains in Derby but they were allgood natured comments and in many cases we got to

explain why we have a team in the area despite theaforementioned lack of mountains, which was after all,

one of our main aims.All in all, the festival was a great success for us, both in

the amount of money raised and the amount of peoplespoken to, but it was also an enjoyable experience andwe’d like to thank the organisers, the volunteer helpers,the staff of Derby Live and all the people that took time

out to chat to us for making it so. Kevin Corcoran

The City Charter Fest also gave DerbyCAMRA a chance to remember one of itsfinest Campaigners, Julian Hough whohad passed away recently. Julian was verymuch instrumental in everything the

Festival did over many years and a beer hehad brewed just before he died was onsale at the event. There was also apresentation to the Oesophageal PatientsAssociation on his behalf from money

raised from various fund raisingevents which included: EmmaHough and George Henshawrunning the EdinburghMarathon; Richard Hough andKirsty Anderson running theMidnight Sun Marathon inTromso, Norway and thecollection raised at Julian'scelebration of life on the 12thJune at Spondon MethodistChurch, the Royal Oak,Ockbrook and via abtdonate.julianhough site.Julian’s wife Gillian said "I'd liketo thank every single personwho's donated money to theOPA in memory of Julian - it istruly humbling how generouseveryone has been. £6,266.81represents 10% of the OPA'sannual funding, so it will make areal difference. Julian wouldhave been deeply touched bywhat has been achieved."

Derby CAMRAHappy 40th Birthday

Derby CAMRA was officially 40 years old on 3rd July 2014 andappropriately Birthdaycelebrations took place at theAlexandra on Siddals Road, thevery pub where the Branch wasformed all those years ago. Aspecial cloudy wheat beer titledthe Big 4 0H! brewed at theBrunswick by Branch memberstook pride of place on the bar andyes there was a cake (see frontpage photos). Prior to the officialcelebrations founder membersgathered on a Monday afternoonin the Alex to reminisce over a fewpints whilst looking back at DerbyCAMRA memorabilia and the firstDerby real ale guide published in1976 (see photo on this page).Celebrations then continued witha trip to Batemans Brewery (seearticle on the next page) andother events are plannedthroughout the year to make surewe truly mark are 40th in style.

There are lots of Salems, fivein the UK, over 30 in the US,

and an extreme metal band, butthere’s only one Salem BridgeBrewery, the home of GeorgeBateman and Sons Ltd. This wasthe destination for part three ofDerby CAMRA’s celebration ofits 40th birthday.Why Batemans? Well, DerbyCAMRA started in the AlexandraHotel, Derby, and Batemans was,not then, nor now, but some timein between, a part-owner of thispub. A tenuous connection youmight think, but any excuse for aday out in this fine brewery.There were 35 of us on the coach,many regulars, a good handful ofoccasionals and a couple ofnewcomers. One of these, Mark, aself-styled CAMRA virgin, said hehad thoroughly enjoyed his dayout, and was last seen gettingdetails of our next trip (to York)from Dean.It is two and a half hours toWainfleet, but we broke ourjourney in Boston. Here we splitup into three of four informalgroups with time to explore acouple or so pubs with the aid ofcopies of Dean’s map showing theGood Beer Guide pubs. A fewtook a bit of time out to explorethis attractive town, and Janespent 80p on a representativesouvenir of Lincolnshire, a giantred cabbage, which by now will bewell-pickled.The brewery was pleasantly busywith visitors, most of them therefor a Batemans ‘Bands on theBank’ event. We had freeadmission to this with a freehamburger or hotdog, courtesy ofBatemans, as well as a freebrewery tour and free pint of beer.So, we had a very pleasant fewhours in Wainfleet, listening to thebands or sitting and chatting in‘Mr George’s’ bar in the famousBatemans windmill (five real alesavailable), or in the sunshine inthe adjacent mill yard. Our brewery tour was led by theyoung and enthusiastic Harry,who thanked CAMRA for helpingto keep the brewery independentin the mid-1980s and thereby, forthe then unborn Harry, ultimatelyhis job. Had the brewery not beenkept in the family, it would surelyhave been closed and ‘Batemans’would now be just a brand,brewed in a factory in theMidlands.

Harry’s tour was both informativeand entertaining (Q: why doBatemans no longer produce theirpopular Strawberry Fields beer? A:Because it was almost impossibleto get the taste of strawberry outof the pipework; you really don’twant XB to taste faintly ofstrawberries.) But to hear aboutcocoa nibs and the horrendoustale of the exploding cows, youwill have to visit the breweryyourself – it’s easy by train.

But it all had to end and, withclear roads and two brief ‘comfortstops’, we were back in Derby, intime for buses home or, for some,a final pint.

The highlight of the day? To methis was in the new brewery, the“Theatre of Beers”, where paintedbricks commemorate those whocontributed towards the revival ofthe brewery. One of these reads“Derby CAMRA Members”, soperhaps with this, and the factthat Bateman is celebrating its140th anniversary, the connectionwith Derby’s 40th birthday is notso tenuous after all.

So many thanks to Batemans for agreat day out. And many thanksalso to the late ‘Mr George’ whowas the driving force in saving thebusiness from being sold off. Welost Shipstones, we lost HomeAles, Hardys and Hansons,Mansfield, Ruddles and manymore regional brewers, but thanksto George Bateman, and now thefourth generation of the familyJaclyn and Stuart, Batemans, andits ‘Good Honest Ales’, stillflourishes. Long may that be.

On a sunny Sunday in July, we caughtthe Villager bus from Derby bus station

which conveniently stops in the centre ofWillington and Repton. Alighting at TheCross, we walked past the historicbuildings on Repton High Street, beforeascending Pinfold Lane to start at theMount Pleasant on the road of the samename. The semi-rural, roadside inn, whichonce boasted of having Britain’s longestbar servery, majors on food, with theSunday carvery particularly good value.Hand pulled Marston’s Pedigree is offeredand opening hours are limited: 6 to 9evenings and 12 to 2 Sunday lunchtimes.

Heading back down to the High Street theGeorgian, stuccoed Bulls Head comes intoview. Occupying a large site, considerableinvestment has seen a large, tentedconservatory erected and a pizza oven forfreshly baked pizzas. Gentrified with arustic feel within, and an attractive terraced

garden to the rear, the Bulls Head hasmuch to offer with Pedigree and DancingDuck Ay Up (£3.50) on the bar. Trevor Harrisof Derby Brewing Company ran the pub inthe 1980s when it sold the superb andsorely missed Ind Coope Draught BurtonAle which won CAMRA Champion Beer ofBritain in 1990.

Near The Cross, we found the Red Lionwhich has a large, modern, opened-outinterior with Pedigree and WychwoodJester Jack vying for attention on the bar.Outside the rear extension, there’s apleasant veranda with decked flooring.

The Shakespeare was demolished longago and The Boot was closed but weunderstand Bespoke Inns is likely to revivethe place with an on-site microbrewery.

Heading out of Repton, we pass ReptonSchool founded in 1557. The ancient seatof learning has spawned some notable

sportsmen, including cricketer, ChrisAdams, and Rams’ footballer, Will Hughes.And recently the public school was gracedby the presence of the great West Indiancricketer, Gary Sobers.

Crossing the 5 arch, former toll bridge thatstraddles the Trent, we’re soon inWillington where the Mercian Marinaattracts 200,000 visitors a year and a lavishnew retail development will open soon,complete with bar/bistro.

The three pubs here are within a stone’sthrow of one another and the low slungGreen Man was our first destination. Oneroomed with extensive use of naturalmaterials, Bass, Pedigree and SharpsDoombar were the offerings in theelongated room which had photographs ofold Willington adorning the walls. There’s acobbled forecourt for drinkers, and dinerscan take advantage of homemade food atvery reasonable prices.

Rising Sun

On the opposite corner sits the Rising Sun which featured inthe inaugural CAMRA Good Beer Guide in 1974. This pub likesto source its beers from various parts of the Marston’s empire,hence there’s Ringwood Boon Doogle from Hampshire,together with Burton brews, Old Empire, and the ubiquitousPedigree. The Thai restaurant has sadly closed but, following arefurbishment, food should shortly be on the menu again.

You’ll never go hungry at the Dragon, the one-time Ind Coopehouse, serving food between 8am and 9pm, which is now thejewel in Bespoke Inns’ crown. The extended pub is thecomposite of old, adjoining cottages and is, at once,traditional and contemporary. The cavernous, beamed interiorhas exposed brickwork, church style pews and distinct areaswhich were packed during our visit. There was a pleasingselection of draught beer with the dark, dry, Blue Monkey 99Red Baboons, Burton Bridge Hooray Henry, Doombar and yes,you guessed it, Pedigree. The garden reaches down to thecanal and with the Marina and Toyota car manufactory nearby,business is brisk. In the 1980s, proprietor, Heidi Taylor, workedin catering in the House of Commons and even brushedshoulders with royalty. Heidi’s influence is apparent in thefresh produce that is always integral to the menu.

So, there you have it; half a dozen attractively located pubs inneighbouring south Derbyshire villages, all offering decentreal ale.

Sub-Branch NewsAshbourne Beer FestivalPreparations for our second Beer Festival atthe Ashbourne Town Hall continue to gatherpace 10th – 12th October 2014. There wontbe another edition of Derby Drinker outbefore the festival, so please look out forupdates on our page on the Derby CAMRAwebsite and our Facebook page. We havefinalised the Saturday music line-up and areclose to completing Friday as well. At the timeof writing this (early August), the beer list isabout to be agreed upon and we lookforward to presenting as wide a range of bothlocal and far-flung beers as possible, togetherwith a select small range of ciders, includingone to look out for from a brand-new venturelocal to us, the Kniveton Cider Company, set

up by three of our sub-branch members. Ourbest wishes for great success go to Hannah,Kevin and Richard.

Pub NewsIn local pub news, our town newspaper isrunning a series of popular votes to find thefavourite outlet of their readership ofdifferent types of businesses. The result of thevote for favourite pub was a win for the Cockat Clifton, with the Okeover Arms at Mapletonin second and the Smith's Tavern in thirdplace. Our congratulations to each of themand we hope this helps to raise all our localpubs' profiles just that little bit more, inconjunction with our continuing efforts.

The Cock at Clifton was the site a few monthsago of the very first automated shop vendingmachine, designed for villages with no shop

facilties, which was set up in their car park.Designed and built by a local Ashbournebusinessman, this has proved so successfulthat a second machine has now beeninstalled at the Miner's Arms at Brassington,another nearby village with no facilities.Combining these two ventures with thevillage shop within the Sycamore at Parwich,this area is showing the way in using pubs ascommunity hubs and focal points for villagersother than simply being a pub.

We are hoping to organise a trip to WhimBrewery at Hartington in the near future, aswell as taking in a visit and possible sub-branch meeting at our local brewery,Heywood Bad Ram, at the Callow Top HolidayPark in Ashbourne. Again, details of thosemay just miss the next DD editon, so updateswill be on our section of the Derby webpage.

BREWERY IN FOCUSHARTSHORNS BREWERY

Two years ago I got an urgent call and Iwhipped up to Hartshorns Brewery to

meet the then Mayor Lisa Higginbottomwho was launching 2 brother’s Brewery.(See main photo on the right of the page).The brothers in question are Darren andLindsey Hartshorns and as time haspassed things are ticking along nicely,with their beer Shakademus heading tothe Great British Beer Festival this year. Icalled in early one sunny morning to meetwith Darren, as he was brewing, to find outhow things are going.

Surprisingly both brothers still work full timeLindsey for Rolls Royce and Darren as a CivilEngineer. Indeed it was when Royce’s postedLindsey to Pointe-Claire in Canada that thehome brewing bug really bit him. Both brothershad already dabbled with home brewing inDerby, but Lindsey noticed the high number ofhomebrew shops in Point-Claire and couldn’tresist having a play with the abundance ofdifferent ingredients. Recipes started beingswapped across the Atlantic as Darren andLindsey began honing their brewing craft usingbeer design books and their innate knowledgeof what constituted a good beer.

However when Lindsey came back to Derbybrewing was put on hold as both brotherslaunched into family life and children. In thefullness of time Lindsey had the idea to beginbrewing commercially and Darren made ithappen finding the premises and ordering thefermenters.

As the smell of ripe blackcurrant fills the airDarren tells me he is brewing a new beer whichis un-named as yet, this will be added toHartshorns stable of 6 varied and very drinkablebeers. An application has been submitted tocreate an off licence at the front of the Brewerywhich would sell draught beers and somebottles. Hartshorns can also be engaged as ahired in bar for weddings and other events; theycan even produce personalised pump clips orbottle labels.

Looking forward Darren can foresee there maybe a hop shortage due to demand in 2015, but

the biggest threat to brewers Darren says is beerduty. For example on a £65 barrel of beer awhopping £15 goes straight to the Governmentas duty. Even though there is a sliding scale ofduty based on the size of the brewery Darrensaid it’s still set too high when you have tofactor in costs like delivery, insurance, utilities,premises, and wages.

Reflecting back Darren says opening a brewerywould have been difficult if they had not beenin full time employment. As a brewer youshould always take advice and listen tofeedback; you can’t pretend it’s nice andremember temperature control is central tosuccess. Having learned the hard way what notto do Lindsey and Darren have createdsomething they and their families can all bemightily proud of.

Hartshorns casks have a black and white bandwhich reflects the brothers love of DerbyCounty Football Club and we pause for amoment to reflect on that fateful day in Maywhen the heart wrenching journey back toDerby had to be made........but the new seasonhas kicked off positively let’s see where anotheryear leads us!

You don’t need to wait though you can raise aglass of Hartshorns beer in celebration of lifeitself at The Peacock, 87 Nottingham Road,Derby as they normally have a selection of 2 or 3on offer. Other outlets are The Horse andGroom, 48 Elms Street, Derby; The Bell andCastle, 92/96 Burton Road, Derby; TheFlowerpot, 23/25 Kings Street, Derby andoccasionally The Dog and Partridge inMarchington.

Derby - Beer Festival CityDerby was already renowned for having a Beer Festival

almost every day due to the sheer number of alesavailable around the City’s pubs but August Bank Holidayweekend saw it truly transformed into a Beer Festival Citywith 8 different pubs putting Festivals on. Derby CAMRAChairman, Gareth Stead went along to give them somesupport…..Well what an August Bank Holiday it was as the Bell & Castle,Coach & Horses, Crescent, Exeter Arms, Flowerpot, Furnace,Greyhound and Royal Telegraph all had Festivals on ofdifferent shapes and sizes offering a fantastic array of beersand ciders as well as some great live music.Potfest was the biggest of them all with over 40 ales onbased on a Celtic theme while the Exeter & Furnace chippedin with 20 apiece. The Exeter’s were all brewed by femalebrewers (Brewsters) while the Furnace went for unusual

guest ales not seen around these parts much. TheGreyhound majored on real ciders & perries with up to 19available as well as additional beers on the main bar. Theother four pubs had an additional stillage of 4-6 ales on inaddition to those on the main bar. While they might nothave had as many as the others there was a good choice ofdifferent beers available and you have to applaud each ofthe pubs for having a go. The Coach & Horses has had Festsbefore of course but the Bell & Castle, Crescent and RoyalTelegraph were all new to the game and the effort theymade was tremendous.

Anyone in Derby over Bank Holiday weekend was literallyspoilt for choice and I bumped into many beer tourists onmy crawl who were thoroughly enjoying the occasion. Mindyou doing all 8 on one night wasn’t perhaps the best ideabut nevertheless I had a great time from what I remember.So here’s to next year and perhaps we can make doublefigures.

With autumn

approaching so is the

cider making season. October

is the main month, and

provided you have access to

some apples / pears, why not

try making some of your own?

1 gallon demijohns (with

airlocks) are perfect for small

scale cider making, and you

will need about 10Kg of fruit

to fill one. Any fruit will do,

you don’t have to get hold of

varieties which are grown

specifically for cider making. A

blend of varieties works best,

with more eaters than

cookers, say 2 to 1 should give

a decent balance. If I get hold

of any pears I just put them in

with the apples; 10 to 20%

pear softens the cider

somewhat. The fruit should be

as ripe as possible, i.e. on the

point of dropping, so don’t be

tempted to start too early in

the season. Windfalls are fine

so long as they are not going

mouldy; bruising and

scabbiness are OK.

Give the fruit a good wash and

throw out any bad ones. Now

you need to extract the juice,

which is remarkably difficult to

do without specialist

equipment. It’s a two stage

process, milling which reduces

the fruit to a coarse pulp and

the pressing which extracts the

juice from the pulp. Milling on a

very small scale can be done

with a food processor, and

proper cider mills just do the

same thing on a much bigger

scale. Pressing involves

containing the pulp in

something porous, e.g. nylon

cloths while serious pressure is

applied to force out the juice.

Barrel presses, sold for wine

making are fine; otherwise you

will have to improvise.

Dedicated cider presses use a

system of cloths and boards.

The pulp is folded into a cloth

using a removable square and a

slatted board placed on top.

This is a “hair”; the process is

repeated to produce a stack of

cheese is then pressed,

manually or hydraulically and

out flows the juice.

Now you have produced non-alcoholic apple juice, whichshould taste fine. It won’t,however, stay as apple juicebecause there is natural yeastin the fruit and it will start toferment into cider, so you don’thave to do anything else to it. Iadd wine yeast for consistency,and check the starting gravitywith a hydrometer. It will be atleast 1050 if you are using goodripe fruit; if it is less I add extrasugar. Now comes the hardpart because patience isrequired before your cider isready to drink. If you ferment itsomewhere warm it might beready by Christmas, withoutheat it will be Easter at theearliest. Rack it off from thesediment and give it a try. Yourcider will probably be very dry,since the fermentation willhave converted all the availablesugar to alcohol, so sweeten totaste, get comfortable andenjoy!

August 9th marked the firstannual Dull & Boring Day, a newstate holiday organised by theOregon town of Boring and theScottish village of Dull. (it’s true,google it if you don’t believe me).Well it may have been dull andboring in those places, butexcitement was growing down inMatlock Bath. Whilst out on theSouth Parade the normalweekend business of welcomingmotorcyclists with copious fishand chips was happening, downthe road at the Fishpond Hotelthey were unveiling the CAMRAApproved 2nd Matlock and DalesBeer Festival for the partaking ofLocAle.

There were 30 beers in the mainFestival Bar which was in theupstairs Ballroom. 24 of these werehoused on the innovative stillage

and integral cooling systemdesigned and built by pub ownerand local engineer andbusinessman Trevor Milner (for thefirst festival last year), with another6 beers and 4 ciders on the endbar. However the whole pub wasturned in to a Beer Festival withanother 6 beers in the main bar,topped off by a further 6 beers anda cider in the garden bar giving agrand total of 42 beers and 5 cidersavailable at any one time.

But this very definitely a LocAlefestival where all the beers weresourced from micro-brewerieswithin approximately 25 road milesof the pub, which takes in much ofDerbyshire, including Derbyobviously, as well as parts ofNottingham and Sheffield. Due tothe impressive number of micro-breweries in this area we were

treated to an amazing choice ofalmost entirely new and differentset of beers from those oftenavailable in the Matlock and Dalesarea.

Of course being at the Fishpond,the music was much in evidence - itreally is a beer and music festivaland there were some great artistson over the weekend.

So the weather stayed mainlyfine for the whole weekend,and despite intermittentdownpours of the biblicalvariety nothing could dampenthe enthusiasm of the drinkersin the garden bar. Of coursenone of this would have beenpossible without the MadCAMRA and Fishpond Hotelteams so thanks to them all.

But I hear you ask – how did Dulland Boring day go in Oregon – wellI can only believe it slipped past ok,with the locals partaking of alefrom the Ninkasi Brewing Company(based in Eugene, Oregon) whichtakes the name Ninkasi from theMesopotamian goddess of beer. Itsnot LocAle though is it.

One of CAMRA’s key campaignshas been to persuade the

government to crack down onunfair practices by some (but farfrom all) pub owning companies(pubcos).

These practices include: rent increaseswell beyond inflation; limiting the rangeof beers they can sell and chargingprices for them well beyond free tradeprices; over-charging for supportservices; and failing to meetcommitments for improvements andrepairs.

Many publicans find themselves earningless than the minimum wage. Even ifthey have been successful in building uptheir trade, some pubcos take the lion’sshare of the extra profits. Manylicensees have had to leave the business,losing their initial investment, and oftentheir home.

All this seems contrary to any businesssense, but unfortunately, some of thebig pubcos are deeply in debt. They paythis off by squeezing as much as theycan from their tenants, or by selling thepub off for alternative use.

In this area, Dave Mountford of the BoatInn at Cromford has been a tireless andeffective campaigner on behalf of anumber of threatened publicans. Hewas deeply involved in the case of thePattenmakers Arms at Duffield, whichwas ultimately resolved in favour of thetenant. Dave, a GMB official, who is nowinvolved in the case of the Fisherman’sRest at Broadholme, has had directpersonal experience of pubco excesses.You can see him making the case forreform very powerfully athttp://youtu.be/tBBkfJbYaaM

CAMRA, working with other nationalorganizations, has now persuaded the

government to introduce legislation.However, the proposed measures do notgo far enough. We are still pressing forpubco-owned pubs to be able to buy atrue guest beer at normal trade prices,or to have the option of a market rent-only deal, effectively making them freehouses.

All DD readers can help this campaignby telling us about any probleminvolving pubcos. Though we do nothave the resources and expertise to helpdirectly in individual cases, the DerbyBranch of CAMRA is collectinginformation on unfair practices and willpass it on to the national campaign. Thepubcos realize that it will be verydifficult for the government to sweeplots of detailed and reliable informationunder the carpet. So please send yourinfo to [email protected].

Pub of the Year Awardthe Furnace Inn onDuke Street in Derbyhas gone one betterand taken theDerbyshire Pub of theYear title for 2014. Thisis a tremendousachievement for thepub after only re-opening just over 2years ago and itbecomes the only CityCentre pub to ever winthis coveted honourwhich is testament tothe hard work andenthusiasm of ownerPedro Menon and staffwho have made thisone of Derbyshire’s topReal Ale destinations.

The competition for thisaward was intense with10 other pubs fromthroughout Derbyshirewho won theirrespective CAMRABranch titles competingagainst each other to becrowned Derbyshire’sbest. CAMRA judgesvisited all the pubs overa period of time and theFurnace came out ontop. The Award waspresented at the AugustBank Holiday BeerFestival whenDerbyshire AreaOrganiser, Jane Lefleywas on hand to do thehonours. The Furnacenow goes forward to theEast Midlands round andwe wish them well.

“Beer Festival movesto Belper with anAmericana theme”The Amber Valley CAMRA Beer andCider Festival moves in this, its 5thyear, to a new venue, Strutts in Belper,from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28thSeptember. As it is also the 20thanniversary of the twinning of Belperwith Pawtucket in Rhode Island, USA,there will be a special Americanatheme for the festival in terms of bothbeer and music.

Earlier this year we contacted all thebrewers in the Pawtucket area to askif they would like to get involved inthe festival. As a result, collaborationbrews are already planned betweentwo of our local breweries, Amberand Leadmill, and two Pawtucketbrewing companies, Foolproof andRavenous. The resulting beers will beunique, combining the real aleexperience of our brewers with theinnovation and passion of the USbrewers.

Amber Valley CAMRA recently hosteda social at the Strutt Club in Belper(winner of the Amber Valley Club ofthe Year for 2014) for the delegationvisiting from Pawtucket to celebratethe 20th anniversary of the twinning.The social was to thank BlackstoneValley Tourism for their help incontacting all the Pawtucketbreweries and to promote theSeptember beer festival and theAmericana theme. Our thanks go toPaul Carroll, the Strutt Club Steward,for helping to ensure the visitors hada good time by putting on a buffetand jazz band, plus serving a greatrange of ales in the Club anddownstairs in the Arkwright’s bar.Pete Hounsell from Amber Ales, whowas the first local brewer to sign upto do a collaboration brew, was onhand to present the guests with apack of bottled Amber beers and aglass (see photo).

At the festival there will be over 60excellent beers of all types andstrengths from around the UK plus awide variety of ciders, perries andwines. The beer and cider lists will beavailable to view on the Amber ValleyCAMRA website closer to the festivaldate www.ambervalleycamra.org.ukStrutts is ideally situated on the A6just outside Belper town centreopposite Babbington Hospital. Therailway station and bus station areless than a 5 minute walk away andbuses stop right outside the venue,which has its own large car park. Thisstone built, grade 2 listed Edwardianbuilding has loads of character andambiance and the festival will takeplace in the main hall and in roomson the ground floor and the first floor,all in the North wing. All drinks will beserved from a marquee in the NorthQuadrangle. There will be a wide range ofentertainment throughout Friday andSaturday, with musical styles rangingfrom blues & jazz to folk & rock, someof which will of course reflect theAmericana theme of the festival. Fulldetails of the bands can be found onthe website above. The use of variousrooms as well as the main hall atStrutts means there will be quietrooms available at all sessions andThursday and Sunday will be music-free.There are no advance tickets this yearso just come along and pay on thedoor, but please arrive early to ensureadmission. Russ Gilbert, the Derby Camra CityCharter Beer Festival Chair,

accompanied by Martyn Reek, JulianTubbs, Mark Fletcher and Mike Ainsleyfrom Derby Camra paid a visit to thefirst Osnabruck Beer Festival. Visitorsfrom Osnabruck have been enjoying theDerby Festival for many years so wethought it only polite and in the spirit ofthe friendship between the two cities toaccept their kind invitation. The visitwas of course only to research the waythe Germans organised a festival;enjoying a beer or two a secondaryconsideration.The party arrived on Friday lunchtimedespite disruptions to the rail networkcaused by severe storms, and booked intoour very smart hotel. After freshening upwe were met by Rob, the Derby envoy toOsnabruck, who escorted us to the MarketPlace where the festival was happening.Unlike British beer festivals which areindoor or in a single large marquee, thiswas a series of small gazebos run bybreweries or bars. The beers were mainlyGerman of course but also an internationalselection, though not many from the UK.The festival was just starting and still fairlyquiet which gave us chance to sample acouple, chat to a few stall holders andlearn about the intricies of glass hire.After a meal at the Kartoffel Haus wereturned to the Marker Place and it was nolonger quiet! The whole area was throngedwith people of all ages meeting friends,drinking beer, listening to music andhaving a good time - just like the beerfestivals we're used to. The evening passedquickly abd as the research became morethorough recollections got vaguer.The following morning we were invited toa civic reception at the Rathaus and joinedby Kai, the Osnabruck envoy to Derby, anda group of our fellow citizens. Theleader ofthe Council explained Osanbruck's historyespecially the 30 years war and TheTrematy of Westphalia. The two envoysthen gave us a tour of the City beforelunch in Osnabruck's brew pub. Moreresearch!

After lunch Rob and Kai introduced us toan American ex-professional footballerwho now runs a bar in the city and waspart of the festival. He explained how itworked and was proud to say he'dmanaged to import some fine Americanbeers (including Budweiser and CoorsLight!) for the festival. We decided to stickto German beers.

A chance to research a couple of localpubs before the Watchman's walk intheevening where we learned about theTreaty of Westphalia again and howsoldiers from Osnabruck managed toavoid the Battle of Waterloo and return asheroes. The festival on Saturday eveningwas even more packed than Friday withpeople having a good time. Back to thehotel before midnight to see the football(No further comment needed)

Sunday was a quiet day with an interestingvisit to the Felix Nussbaum Museum andthen a well planned journey to make useof our free bus passes to discover areasoutside the old town. Coffee and cake wastaken in an old quarry now an educationaland cultural area.

On Sunday evening the festival wasrunning out of beer so Martyn and Mikehad to put up with a 8.5% Nordic Rye aswe watchedthe festival being taken down.

What did we discover from our research?The German festival was much more of acommercial enterprise with any risk beingtaken by breweries and bars rather thanCamra organising the whole thing, takingthe risk and relying on volunteers. Thesimilarities were much more striking - agreat atmosphere, people of all ageshaving a great time enjoying a range ofbeers responsibly. We also learned that theDerby contingent preferred dunkel andweizen beers to pils.

The return journey on Monday wasuneventful - the rail system had recoveredbut we must record our thanks to theDusseldorf police for helping us to find abrew pub for lunch.

David Brett It is with deep sadness that we have to reportthe passing of a great campaigner, David Brettwho was a great friend & supporter of DerbyCAMRA even though he was a member ofMansfield & Ashfield Branch. He was anoutstanding contributor to the success of theDerby (City Charter) Beer Festival over theperiod 2005 to 2009 in his role as Cellarmanager. During that period he gained for thefestival four Cask Marque awards. Initially hemade Derby the only CAMRA festival, alongwith Mansfield, who were ‘Cask Marqued'.David had been Mansfield & Ashfield BranchChairman and Deputy Regional Directoralong with many other roles within CAMRAand was a well-known national figure in theCampaign. He will be sadly missed by bothfriends and family alike.

brought you Derby’s firstmicropub, the LittleChester Alehouse, thedynamic duo, Walter &George from WentwellBrewery will run their newventure along similarlines. It will be calledappropriately the LastPost as the building was aformer Post Office andwill offer Real Ales &Ciders in a convivial andrelaxing atmosphere.Licensing hours are set tobe 11.00 to 23.00 and itsopening may yet revive adifferent Derby Mile crawlwith some great Real Alepubs around about andstave off the Last Postbeing played once and forall.

And then there were TwelveThirteen really has proved unlucky for some, as Derby will soon be losing one of itsmicrobreweries when BLACK IRIS moves to larger premises in Basford, Nottingham inOctober. They have been brewing at the Flowerpot in Derby for about three years nowwith their first brew being Peregrine Ale and have brewed some 15 different beers inthat time. We wish Alex & Nick well and they will continue to supply the Flowerpotwith their ales after the move. In the meantime the plant at the Flowerpot will remainempty, any takers?

Ever fancied owning a slice ofbrewing history? Then this Auction

is just the thing. Run by the Campaignfor Real Ale, it is returning to Burtonon Trent’s Town Hall on Saturday 27thSeptember. It again promises over150 interesting auction lots;everything from mirrors to trays; wallsigns, bottles and books. Plus thereare a number of stands sellingmemorabilia adding to theatmosphere in this wonderfulVictorian venue.There are all sorts of items to decorateyour home. Mirrors from Friary Meuxand Worthington, a clock fromCharrington or what about a bust of JWLees (Manchester)? More unusual itemsinclude a Sam Smith's dray and aMarston's snuff box and if you are arugby fan then the Worthington Efigurines might catch your eye. There isalso a nice ashtray from Marston's butone or the rarer items is a metal noticefrom Atkinsons. This brewery wasfounded in the mid 1800s in AstonPark, Birmingham. It was taken over byM&B in 1959 and closed 2 years later.

If you have never been to the NationalBreweriana Auction before, the auctionis great fun to take part in and is anopportunity to get some great bargainsplus many of the items on sale canappreciate in value. And, of course, likeany CAMRA event, there is some goodbeer on sale all day from a localmicrobrewery.

Burton on Trent is less than 15 minutesby train from Derby and the Town Hallis just a short walk from the railwaystation. The event starts at 11am withthe opportunity to view the lots andbrowse the breweriana stands that willalso be there. Bidding starts at12.30pm. First of all we would to apologisefor the absence of a report in the

last Drinker unfortunately we wereaway on a boating holiday visitingpubs further afield quite a few inShropshire and Cheshire. In ourabsence not a lot has seemed tohappen other than tenants of pubsowned by Pubco’s changing handson a regular basis, you go for a drinkone day in a pub then the next timeyou visit it, a new tenant has takenover, and whilst on the subject hereis just a couple that we know of atthe moment…

Pub News The Poacher, South Street, Ilkeston, a PubPeople outlet is now run by Alison & PaulThomason, they were previously at TheHorseshoe, Worksop, and The Walton Hotel,Walton, on our visit we tried the Black Irispale ale and it was spot on.

The Bulls Head, Little Hallam Hill, Ilkeston, AGreene King outlet now has new tenants inLes & Carol Coope who previously ran TheNew White Bull at Giltbrook, on our visitwas the usual Greene King selection but hewill be having changing guest beers.

Another bit of goods new ‘we hope,’ is TheNottingham Castle, Kenilworth Drive, KirkHallam which has been acquired by Kuldip

Sandhu and is a free house, on our visit onereal ale was on, the pub has had a faceliftand looks smart and with a very pleasantback garden, having a look at the menu itseems dining will be the main stay but it’sworth a visit.

Summer Pub of the YearYet again the Spanish Bar with itsoutstanding back garden with flowers andample seating has won the accolade of thesummer pub of the year. WELL DONEHANNAH, we understand that she had anexcellent beer festival in July, sorry we wereon holiday and missed it. The Presentationof the award will be on Wednesday 17thSeptember at 8.00pm.

DearToper... Consider! Dear Toper, the growing trend, in pub toilets forautomatic light switches, triggered by movement; whichmeans that the lights don’t come on until someone hasactually entered the fetid chamber of horrors. The trouble isthat there is often a short delay before illumination, which canseem like an eternity to someone who is caught short, and sohe blunders on into the darkness, regardless of the awaitinghazards! After colliding with cubicle partitions, washbasinsand hand dryers (it’s the only wayyou can get them to come on),and having stepped in somethingless than wholesome lying on thefloor, he arrives at what he hopesis a urinal, just as the light-fittingabove reluctantly flickers intolife. He then realises that he isurinating over a radiator andjudging from the stench that isemanating from it, several otherpeople have been there beforehim.

I am sure that the money saved onelectricity bills (at the expense of thecustomer’s well-being, not tomention his dry trousers) will be putto good use – possibly to fund thepub’s once a week “Cheese Night”.These events always start well, withthe pub’s regulars enjoying the hospitality and modestly partakingof the fayre on offer. After a few weeks, however, the word has gonearound the town that there is free food to be had, and those semi-professional gannets, who baulk at the idea of actually buying anevening meal, swoop to devour everything in sight – piling theirflimsy paper plates high, with a skill that would tax the pyramidbuilders of ancient Egypt! Then, after washing it all down with a halfpint of something cheap, they quickly move on to a pub along theroad, where the weekly “Quiz Night” is just about to come to anend, and the accompanying sandwiches and soggy sausage rollsare about to be served.

Is this what the toilet lights are going out all over Britain for? Tofeed the gluttony of skinflints? Or is it perhaps to conserve energy?

Thereby placating the little greenmen (and women – I’d hate to bethought sexist). Speaking of whom,I seem to remember, that a fewyears ago, some of their fellowtravellers were imploringhouseholders to plant Buddleiabushes in their gardens, for thepurpose of attracting butterflies.This rampant weed, thusencouraged, now infests the urbanlandscape like an army of Triffids!There doesn’t seem to be abuilding of architectural merit inBritain that doesn’t have its ownodious specimen of this voraciousweed growing out of the roof –sinking its destructive roots everdeeper into the fabric of thestructure and hastening that

dreaded day when someone from the local authority will comealong and say: “Hmmm, you’re right, it doesn’t look very safe, does it?– Better to pull it down and build something new. – Is that bulgingbrown envelope for me? – How very kind. Er, you will make sure thatthe new building is environmentally friendly, won’t you? Automaticlight switches – that sort of thing? It’s just that we’ll need to fob thepublic off with something if they’re going to lose a local landmark, andsupposed green benefits are very useful for that at the moment. I daresay that you could get away with building just about anything thesedays if you said that it would save the planet”. Consider that, DearToper!
