The Derby CAMRA Branch Pub of theYear Awards were presented recently at

specially organised, well attended socialsat each pub where Branch membersmingled with the locals to enjoy theoccasion. The overall Branch Pub of theYear & City Pub of the Year Winner, theFurnace Inn on Duke Street in Derby sawthe full contingent of pub staff inattendance to receive the award (see frontpage photo) from Derby CAMRA Chairman,Gareth Stead who gave an anecdotal,Shiny speech to mark the award. TheChairman was also on hand at the LittleChester Ale House on the same night togive owner, George Lambert the runner-upaward for Derby’s first Micro Pubinnovation (see front page photo).

The Country Pub of the Year Winner’sPresentation also proved to be a popularevent at the Pattenmakers Arms in Duffieldwhere Claire Muldoon and Emily Bowler(see front page photo) were delighted toreceive the award from Gareth Stead and aput on a marvellous buffet to send

everyone home happy. Since the occasionwe have also had the great news that thelicensees are staying after a long disputewith owners, Enterprise Inns. Finally, theRoyal Oak at Ockbrook team (see frontpage photo) were pleased to accept theirrunners-up award from CAMRA NationalExecutive member, Julian Hough whowent on to receive a lifetime achievementaward at the Derby CAMRA AGM for hislong service to the campaign both locally,regionally and nationally (see photo below,Julian on the left accepts tankard fromBranch Chairman, Gareth Stead).

notable double in this year’s DerbyCAMRA Club of the Year Awards

with the Liberal Club beingcrowned Club of the Year and theVillage Club receiving the Runner-

Up Award. This is a fineachievement for both clubs as the

competition this year wasparticularly tough with more clubscompeting than ever before. Theyhad to overcome a 3 time winner -the Nunsfield House in Alvaston,last year’s runner up – the British

Legion in Allenton, the Rolls RoyceClub, the Littleover Social Club and

the Darley Abbey Club. Both willpresented with certificates at

forthcoming socials and we hopeto have photos in a future edition

of Derby Drinker.

theme for this year's festival iscelebrating 50 years of DerbyMountain Rescue, which we hopeyou will agree is a very worthycause. The event will be showcasingat least one beer from everyDerbyshire brewery, giving specialattention to the breweries locatedwithin the City of Derby - the bestplace to sample real ale in theworld. The Assembly Rooms staffand Derby Live are working closelywith the committee to help makethe event a huge success. Thefestival capacity will be on a scalewith previous years. However theevent will have a whole new feelbeing outdoors and all on groundlevel. Luckily last year has proved tobe good practice for the volunteerswith the marquee being present.

Arecent edition of the Lonely PlantGuide described Derby as the

“Best place to drink Real Ale in theWorld” and who are we to disagree asthe results of the City’s Annual BeerCensus undertaken by members ofThe Derby Branch of the Campaign forReal Ale have confirmed Derby’s statusas Real Ale Capital of Britain perpopulation head for yet another year.

The census took place in February andinvolved 8 different pub crawls aroundthe City which saw a record numberof Real Ales available on any onegiven night. 325 were counted (up 49on last year) with 195 different onesavailable (up 15 on last year) andthese came from just 71 pubsaveraging 4.5 Real Ales per pub.

In total 78 pubs were visited, 2 wereshut and 5 had no real ale. 9 pubs had10 or more Real Ales on and leadingthe way was the Babington Arms (16),Brunswick (14), Five Lamps (14),Flowerpot (13), Alexandra (11),

Furnace (11), Mr Grundy’s (11),Standing Order (11) and ThomasLeaper (10).

Marstons Pedigree is still the mostdominant brand in the City availablein 31 pubs with Sharp’s Doom Barcoming up fast on the rails in 20 pubsand Bass in 10 pubs. But local ales arewell represented with beers from 12 ofthe City’s breweries widely available -Brunswick, Black Iris, Dancing Duck,Derby, Derventio, Falstaff, Hartshorns,Mr Grundy’s, Rowditch, Shiny, Titanand Wentwell. Beers from otherbreweries around the area were alsowell represented - Blue Monkey,Burton Bridge, Castle Rock,Leatherbritches, Nutbrook andThornbridge to name a few.

The average price of a pint was foundto be £2.94 (7p up on last year).However in reality a lot of pubs werehovering around the £3 a pint markwith some now regularly topping it.But it was pleasing to see a lot more

pubs offering the CAMRA discount onpints and half’s. The dearest pint of thenight was found to be a whopping£3.60 at the Tap for Timothy TaylorsLandlord (which was only £3 at theBrunswick). The honours for thecheapest pint went to the Abbey atDarley Abbey where Sam Smiths OldBrewery Bitter was £1.80 a pint.

So there you have it, a few stats tobear in mind while crawling aroundBeer City once again proving that perpopulation head Derby has more RealAles available than any other City.

In the second of the three part series, PaulGibson looks at the fluctuating fortunes ofsome of the outlying pubs listed inDerbyshire Ale. The 1990 guide was acollaboration of Derbyshire CAMRA branches,listing 800 real ale pubs, and those whichwere featured are in bold type. Such was thepopularity of Derbyshire Ale that not one,but two reprints had to be ordered.There have been some notable successstories at pubs that are now within theAmber Valley CAMRA branch area. At varioustimes in the last ten years, the Hunter Arms,Kilburn, the Black Bull’s Head,Openwoodgate and Old Oak, HorsleyWoodhouse, have all been closed. Industriousand imaginative persons have rescued themand this has been recognised by CAMRA Pubof the Year awards to all three. Mark andPaula Showers bought the Hunter in 2009and turned a struggling, Victorian, Bass pubinto a thriving freehouse serving quality alesand good food. The striking frontage of theHunter was captured in a high quality linedrawing by the guide’s Editor, RegNewcombe. The Creighton family has turnedaround the fortunes of the Old Oak whichwas threatened with demolition before theCreighton’s acquired the Woodhouse pubthat enjoys far reaching rural views. Multiplechoice of the real stuff and the popularRuRaD bar combined to propel the Oak tothe last 16 of the nation’s CAMRA Pub of theYear competition in 2009. Alas, the JollyColliers (Ward’s) and Knife and Steel (IndCoope) in Woodhouse haven’t survived. TheBamford family ran the Bull’s Head, high

above Belper at Openwoodgate between1954 and 1978 but following Greene King’stake-over of Hardy and Hanson thehandsome hostelry closed. Andy Horsfall andNikki Butt have revived the place inspectacular style and opened the rusticBedlam Bar where, at weekends, beeraficionados congregate.

Heanor, the former mining town, was wellpubbed and beer buffs would seek out theRays Arms on Ray Street, for its Hoskin’s(Leicester) ales. The multi roomed, wellupholstered interior was the perfect place toenjoy a pint or two of the superb Penn’s Ale.Sadly, this imposing pub has called lastorders but despite this, and other losses,there are still several good watering holesincluding the newly crowned ErewashCAMRA Pub of the Year, the Butcher’s Armsdown Hands Road in Langley. The Queen’sHead (ex-Shipstone’s), at nearby Marlpoolremains worthy of attention, but towardsRipley along the A610 at Loscoe, the ancientCoach and Horses (Hardy and Hanson) wasdemolished earlier this year. In Ripley itself,half of the dozen listed pubs have closed. It’spleasing to report, however, that thanks toAmber Ales having breathed new life into theformer Shipstone’s house, the Talbot(Taphouse) on Butterley Hill, and J DWetherspoon installing a good range ofguest beers at the Red Lion, the town’sbeerscape looks much brighter. Enterprisinglicensees at the Pear Tree, Holly Bush andBeehive have also helped to rekindle interestin real ale.

The elixir known as Ruddle’s County was a bigdraw at the Chequers, Ticknall, which I firsthad the pleasure of visiting in 1975. I recallthe dulcet tones of Radio Derby’s BarryEcclestone’s commentary of the Rams’thrashing of Real Madrid in the European Cupon the pub’s radio. How times change:Ruddle’s Rutland brewery has slipped intohistory, the lovely, 16thC Chequers faces anuncertain future, and will the Rams everreach the same dizzy heights again? Thewhite painted Sir Francis Burdett on a sharpbend before entering Melbourne also soldRuddle’s County, but was de-licensed manyyears ago. In 1969, John Thompson, a marketgardener, converted the ground floor of hishome, a former farmhouse, into theeponymous John Thompson pub. And it washere in Ingleby that Derbyshire’s dormantbrewing industry revived in 1977 when thewonderfully fruity JTS XXX was launched.John’s son, Nick, now runs the pub andbrewery.

The Hunters Arms

One of the most improved pubs over the years is near SawleyMarina, namely the White Lion, which is also the home of OldSawley Brewing Company. The light, airy interior has a centralservery with Bass and Blue Monkey BG Sips vying for attentionwith ever changing guests frequently from micro-breweries.Also, 4 real ciders were present when I visited. Brewing iscurrently upstairs but a new brew house adjacent to thepleasant, outside seating area, will fire its copper fromSeptember. Saturday and Sunday tend to be the days mostlikely to offer the home brews. The Green Man and Black’s Head, long the bastion ofAshbourne’s real ale scene, is a profound loss, though it’smooted that new licensed premises may be incorporatedwithin the redevelopment. The Howard Arms, Cubley, was acracking, multi roomed, Marston’s house that’s now the privateresidence of a multi-instrumentalist and singer/song writerfrom the 60s and 70s. The cosy New Inn (Bass), Hazelwood Road, Duffield, has gone,as has the Vaults, Wirksworth, a convert to Sam Smith’s in the70s. In nearby Middleton, Alan Johnson has resuscitated theNelson Arms, and the Rising Sun continues to prosper,although the Duke of Wellington (Bass) has closed. Up the hillfrom “Wuzzer”, at Bolehill, lay the Miner’s Standard, a stone-built tavern of considerable character with a landlady servingDraught Bass straight from the cask. This, alas, is anothercasualty. And it isn’t just out of the way places, such as Bolehill,that have felt the wind of change that’s sweeping through thepub trade. On the main A6 at Whatstandwell, two formerHardy and Hanson houses no longer slake the thirst of daytrippers returning from tourist hot-spots. The HomesfordCottage with its unmissable “Kimberley Ales” writ large uponthe roof of the building opposite is now a B&B, and theDerwent Hotel serves coffee and cakes instead of Kimberleyales. These pubs dispensed Kimberley beer through electricpumps, a method of dispense favoured by Nottinghambrewers but now extinct like the old breweries themselves.Another Hardy and Hanson pub, the Queen’s Head, LittleEaton, was a plain but welcoming two roomer that fell intodecline under Greene King’s stewardship. Happily, however, it’sbeen transformed by Derby Brewing Company with its beersand locally sourced food featuring. Derby Brewing Companyhas also acquired the Kedleston Hotel, whose opening weeagerly await.The next Derby Drinker will conclude the Derbyshire Alereview by looking at some city pubs that fell on hard timesbut then revived in startling style.

Sub-Branch News The sub-branch AGM will be held atThe Cock at Clifton on Tuesday 27thMay at 8pm. All are welcome.

The Yew Tree at Ednaston reopened atthe end of February after a period ofsix months closure. There have beensome internal changes to the three barareas – one room has had a newextended bar area installed and thelarger counter has allowed room for acask to be sat on the bar back, so thatbeer can be dispensed directly bygravity. This will be in addition to thethree hand-pumps retained. A pooltable has been recently installed andchanges to the food offerings includepizzas cooked in a wood-burningoven. In support of the re-launch, thesub-branch will be holding its monthlymeeting there in July.

The Izaak Walton Hotel at Ilam hasfinally been sold and looks set toreopen at the end of May, so we hopeto report on it in the next edition.Close by to Ilam, the Dog & Partridgeat Thorpe also continues its long roadto reopening and there may be a dateset by the time you read this. Again,we will report on it as soon as we can.

The Smith’s Tavern played host onApril 4th to the 50th birthdaycelebrations of yours truly, with aspecially brewed one-off 9-gallonbarrel available to all, commissionedfrom the Hopcraft Brewery in SuthWales, with recipe input and physicalassistance with the mashing comingfrom my family. This was a darkoatmeal stout/porter brewed at 5.0%and was universally receivedextremely well, not least bymyself...christened “Gristy’s Fifty” , itwas offered free to all-comers, but weasked for donations to MacMillanCancer Support and with the aid of amagnificent single donation of £200,we raised an incredible £447, roundedup to £450. My heartfelt thanks go outto all.

The Bentley Brook Inn at FennyBentley will be holding its annual beerfestival starting on Friday 23rd Maythrough to Monday 26th May, as wellthe Black Cow at Dalbury Lees, so thisis a great opportunity on a longweekend to visit a couple of goodlocal festivals.

Welcome to the Mild in May and Summer Ale Trail. The trail officially starts on the 10th May and runs up to the start of the 37thDerby City Charter Summer Beer Festival on the 9th July, so you have plenty of time to get supping. To complete the trail, youneed to drink at least half a pint of Mild or Real Ale in each of the pubs listed and collect an appropriately coloured sticker. Acompleted trail card will then entitle you to free entry to one session of the Summer Beer Festival and some free beer. Pubs

This year we have merged the Mild inMay promotion with the SummerBeer Festival Ale Trail. The Trail will belaunched for the 10th May and rununtil the 37th City Charter SummerBeer Festival on 9th July 2014.Participants will initially be collectingred “mild” stickers from each pub inreturn for drinking a half or more ofMild. Cider & Perry TrailThroughout June Amber Valley CAMRA willbe running a cider trail, on similar lines to theone run last October. You drink a half pint (ormore!) of real cider or perry in one of theparticipating pubs and text a score for it outof 5. There will be a prize for the individualvisiting the most pubs, and also awards forthe pubs with the highest average score. Amber Valley CAMRABeer & Cider Festival 2014The 5th Amber Valley CAMRA Beer and CiderFestival (formerly Rail Ale Festival) is movingto a new venue at Strutts in Belper and willrun from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28thSeptember. It will take place in the main hallof this former school and in 5 rooms on theground floor plus 3 rooms on the first floor allin the North wing with all beers, ciders,perries and wines being served from amarquee in the North Quadrangle. There will

be over 100 beers, ciders, perries and winesavailable plus soft drinks and hot & cold foodat all sessions with a hog roast on Friday andSaturday. Thursday & Sunday will be music-free with music in the afternoon andevenings on Friday & Saturday. Tickets willnot be sold for any sessions this year so justcome along and pay on the door. We’ve had some finespring weather recently,

so what could be better than atour around Herefordshire. It’sa lovely unspoilt county andhome to lots of first class smalland medium sized cidermakers. The bonus here is theperry because Herefordshire isthe natural home of perrymaking; most of the cidermakers here also make perry.

First stop is Newton Court,some 4 miles south ofLeominster. Here Paul Stevensruns a working farm with a fineherd of cattle (Herefords, ofcourse). There is a shop sellinghis cider and perry, I had someYarlington Mill cider and hisnew-season (2013 vintage)perry has available; still a bitsweet but full flavoured. Incommon with many of thesmaller producers his cider andperry are organic withoutbeing certified as such; officialaccreditation is quite expensiveand many small producersdon’t regard it as worthwhile.

A short distance away at SuttonSt. Nicholas is Rathays Old Goat

Cider, run by GrahamBlackmore. This is a very smalloperation and a priorappointment is required. The“Old Goat” is due to the herd ofangora goats, very friendly too,who live there. The excellentcider and perry are mainly dueto a fine, mature orchard,planted by Bulmer’s in the1960’s. This is more of a hobbythan a commercial operation,but it is a real gem.

Also a short distance away, atOcle Pychard (lovely name) wefind Oliver’s cider, run by TomOliver. This is another workingfarm, but with sheep ratherthan cattle. Tom has anotherinterest, going on the road, ontour with various bands, but hestill has time to make plenty ofquality cider and perry. Bothare available through the farmshop in draught or bottles.Oliver’s is a multiple awardwinner, both at a regional andnational level.

Towards the Welsh border, nearAbbey Dore we arrive atGwatkins cider. Dennis

Gwatkins, with his bushy beardand braces is one of the realcharacters of the cider scene.This is another working farm,complete with an excellentfarm shop selling a wide rangeof farm produce as well ascider, the smoked streakybacon being especiallydelicious. Gwatkins specializesin single apple varieties; hisStoke Red is smooth tastingand pretty sweet. A goodmedium is his Norman cider,while for those likingsomething really dry I’drecommend the Foxwhelp.

No tour of Herefordshire wouldbe complete without a visit tomy final destination, Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co. Ltd. atPeterstow, otherwise known asBroome Farm. This is an idyllicspot, with the farmhouse andoutbuildings set amongstextensive orchards. These areall cider apple and perry peartrees with a large range ofvarieties represented, somequite rare. The proprietor isMike Johnson and you willsoon find yourself in his

sampling cellar, a place that isdifficult to leave! Mike hasmade a point of offering helpand encouragement to otherbudding cider makers in thearea, as well as holding anumber of open days eachyear, so Broome Farm hasbecome the hub for cidermaking in that part ofHerefordshire. Also available atthe farmhouse are cream teas,evening meals (with cider) andaccommodation, so it is anexcellent spot for a short break.

Finally, throughout June AmberValley CAMRA will be running acider trail, on similar lines to theone run last October. You drinka half pint (or more!) of realcider or perry in one of theparticipating pubs and text ascore for it out of 5. There willbe a prize for the individualvisiting the most pubs, and alsoawards for the pubs with thehighest average score. TheAmber Valley website orposters in participating pubswill give details.

We reported in the last Derby Drinker that anew Micropub was under starters orders in

Castle Donington, well we are now pleased toannounce that it’s up and running and racing

ahead. Called appropriately the ChequeredFlag to mark the Village’s long association withthe nearby racing track, the pub has lots of carand bike racing memorabilia on the walls. It is

located on Borough Street and is the latestmicropub to open being run by Michael Willies

and Caroline Campbell who were living on aboat at Willington Marina before chatting to

Gary Hodder from the Cask and Pottlemicropub in Tutbury and the rest as they say is history. The beer is served on gravity froma room behind the bar and local micros are heavily featured so why not call in and give it

a try. Opening hours are 12-2.30pm and 5-9.30pm Monday to Thursday,12-10.30pmFriday & Saturday and 12-3pm and 5-9.30pm Sunday.

Pub of the YearWe are pleased to announce our BranchPOTY award for 2014 is the Butchers Arms atLangley which was re-opened on December12th 2011 after a period of closure. Thisdown to earth and cosy pub is wellsupported by the local community and anasset to the area. An ex-Hardy & Hansonthen Greene King pub it is now a free houserun by Chris Turner of Coppice Side Breweryin partnership with Richard Creighton ofLeadmill and Bottlebrook Breweries withtheir beers on sale as well as a selection ofother micro brewery beers.

There was a well supported presentationevening attended by both branch membersand locals alike and very fine buffet wasprovided by Michelle (see photo of Kevin ourBranch Chairman and Chris & MichelleTurner on the occasion). Opening hours areMon–Thurs 4.00-10.30 Fri & Sat 3.00-12.00,Sun 12.00-11.00. The pub is also on theNottingham mild trail and well worth a visit.

Pub NewsThe Stumble Inn, Long Eaton is now thehome of Songbird Brewery which isoperated by Samantha Dodsworth, the headBrewster who is the daughter of landlord,Martin Dodsworth. The brewery has been inprogress for 2yrs and finally started brewingin Christmas 2013, it’s a 2 barrel plant

supplying outlets the Long Eaton CricketClub and the Rugby Club. Beers at thepresent are Melody Pale 4.5%, Double Bassbitter 4.2%, Ale House Rock 4.8% and MildThing 4.2% which was tested on our visitand will be on for the mild trail. Martin andSamantha would like to thank Carl of FullMash for all his help in getting started. Thepub will be doing a mild swap with Falstaffbrewery and hopefully this will be availablefor the mild trail. Opening hours are Mon,Tues, Weds 2.00-12.00, Thurs Fri Sat & Sun12.00-12.00.

General Havelock - IlkestonAfter a visit to the pub and speaking toAndrew (brother of Stephan Rutherford whois recovering from a heart problem) he let usknow that he has now taken over the reinsof this establishment with the intention ofpulling the Havelock back to its former busyself and hoping to re-gain some of its lostcustom. The General Havelock in our opinionis a very special pub brought back from along closure and we should support it tomake sure it doesn’t close again, this alsodepends to some degree on the way it is runby the management as well as the punterswho use it. On our visit they had 7 real aleswhich will be rotating and 5 real ciders andthey also doing snacks till 8.00pm. It’s alsoback on the Camra discount trail which isgood news.

DearToper... Consider! Dear Toper, the impending (hopefully) sunny days ofthe forthcoming summer; one of the joys of which are thoselazy Sunday afternoon strolls, that culminate in a refreshingpint at some rural hostelry. But alas, Dear Toper, this harmlessform of pleasure is under threat from dark forces, forincreasingly, Sunday afternoons have become the time whenchildren are allowed to invade the sacred confines of the pub!Having consumed their Sunday pub lunch (or more likely, havingdecorated both themselves and their immediate surroundings withit) the little darlings (theyusually hunt in packs) areseemingly left to theirown devices, whichusually means runningback and forth, screamingand tormenting the familypet (some huge,overweight and ill-traineddog, with mange) to theextent that it barks andwhines even louder thanthey shriek, whilst one oftheir feckless parents getssozzled on overpricedpoor quality wine, and theother (the designateddriver of the gargantuanpeople-carrier that isblocking the entrance tothe car park) sits aroundscowling over a soft drink,that has been in their hand so long that it has taken on thetemperature and consistency of blood. Neither of the non-dotingparents appears to understand that their odious offspring (andmassive stinking pet) have become a nuisance; indeed they seemcompletely oblivious to the existence of their irksome brood, untilone of their number inevitably collides with a waitress carrying atray of drinks. The parents, having made a half-hearted attempt tohelp the bar-staff clear up the mess, now endeavor to appear strict,and in an effort to diffuse the various glares that are being cast intheir direction, they loudly (for the benefit of their aggrievedaudience) instruct their wayward brats to: “Sit down and behave!”This the sullen little people do reluctantly for about thirty secondsbefore becoming restless, at which juncture they are told to, “Gooutside and play!”

The juvenile delinquents, along with the flea-bitten family pet, nowinvade the beer garden, where they plague those poor stateless

refugees known as“smokers”, who, havingbeen banished from thecosy interior of the pub,now find their last tenuousgrasp on licensedpremises - that nub-end-carpeted refuge next tothe wheelie bins, in thecorner of the beer garden -under siege from shriekingchildren and howlingcanines intent onurinating on any uprightobject that doesn’t move!An old friend of mine (veryold!) frequently points outthat the naturalconsequence of allowingwomen into pubs, wasthat sooner or later theywould insist uponbringing their brats in with

them. Personally I would not go as far as banning women andchildren from pubs altogether, but I do believe in the old Victorianmaxim that, “Children should be seen and not heard,” unless ofcourse they get stuck up a chimney whilst doing some worthwhiletask, and make a plaintive, though polite, cry for assistance. (As forwomen, well, anyone who thinks that you can keep them quiet, hasobviously not been married.)But do not despair, Dear Toper, help may be at hand, for I recentlynoted that there was some talk of extending the school day totwelve hours. Personally I think that twenty four hours, seven days aweek, would be a far more reasonable target to attain, with bars onthe windows to ensure the compliance of the inmates! And as forthe family pet: I’m sure that some dodgy burger manufacturersomewhere would be interested! Consider that, Dear Toper!D.T.
