With Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s support, Google has launched a program to test self-driving semi-trucks on Douglas County roads Early in March, Waymo, a Google-owned company, announced that their self-driving semi-trucks will be traveling the roads of Atlanta, bound for Google’s server plant in Lithia Springs, GA. Waymo was the first company to put a fleet of self -driving trucks on public roads over a year ago. They were first tested in California and Arizona. However, Atlanta was chosen for its next phase of testing because of the city’s position as one of the biggest logistics hubs in the country. Governor Nathan Deal praised the partnership between Waymo and Atlanta, stating, “As we look into the future of innovation and efficiency, self -driving vehicles are at the fore- front of enhancing roadway safety and making transportation of American goods more feasible. We are excited to partner with Waymo, the leader in self -driving technology, in testing trucks here.” In highlighting the safety of their trucks, Waymo commented that their “trucks use the same technology and software that powers their self -driving cars and minivans,” which have been on the road for a few years. So far, Waymo has accumulated driving data for 5 million miles on public roads, plus 5 billion more in simulation.” It was interesting to note that Waymo’s software is programmed to drive trucks the same way a human driver would after years of driving passenger cars. The principles are the same, but things like braking, turning, and blind spots are different with a fully-loaded truck and trailer. For the time being, Waymo will have highly trained drivers in the cabs to monitor the systems and take control of the truck if needed. Many legislators, including Governor Nathan Deal, consider self -driving vehicles to be a significant part of the future, one with fewer accidents, DUIs, and fatalities. Twenty-one states, including Georgia, have already passed laws related to self -driving vehicles. We eagerly await to see how the law will be updated to reflect having self -driving vehicles on the road, and what impact that will have on motor-vehicle accidents. Giving Back Sylvia’s Crispy Orange Chicken

Prep: 10 min | Bake: 20 min | Makes: 4 servings

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375. Liberally salt and pepper the chicken breast halves.

2. Heat oil in a large sauté pan over med-high heat and sear the chicken, skin side only, until brown and beginning to crisp (5 min).

3. Meanwhile, make the orange glaze: In a small saucepan, heat the orange juice concentrate, honey, and salt and pepper, to taste, over medium heat. Boil for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat.

4. Turn the chicken over and brush with the glaze. Turn the chicken skin side up and transfer pan to oven. Bake until chicken reaches 160-170 (about 15 min). Brush on more glaze halfway through.

5. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes on a cut-ting board. Remove the chicken breast from the bone and slice the meat.

Douglasville Celebrates Elena Meyers’ Olympic Victory at Arbor Place Mall

Elected officials of Douglas County and Governor Nathan Deal celebrate Elena Meyers Taylor’s third Olympic medal at last month’s Winter Olympic games in South Korea. Elena Meyers Taylor’s Welcome Home ceremony brought dignitaries, such as Mayor Rochelle Robinson and Governor Deal, and local fans out to Arbor Place Mall to give Douglasville’s very own three-time medalist a warm welcome back to Georgia. Following a press conference given by Governor Deal, there was a ceremony in the mall’s food court to present Mrs. Meyers Taylor with a proclamation from the Mayor, and a custom jewelry box to store her Olympic medals.

Mrs. Meyers Taylor expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the support and warm reception from her hometown, where she attended Douglas County schools for all twelve years. After beginning college with a scholarship for softball, she changed her sport to bobsledding, where she has had tremendous success! We were excited to hear that she plans on competing in the Winter 2022 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Douglas County High School Math Teacher Gets an Overwhelming Number of Nominations and Wins Teacher of the Month a Second Time!

Twenty-five students from Mr. Paul Daniels’ math class nominate him to help him win another award!

It was moving to read so many heartfelt nominations from Mr. Daniels’ students. This isn’t surprising though, as he has received numerous nominations during the three years that we have sponsored Teacher of the Month. Many of his students expressed their appreciation for the extra help before and after school, the stress-free environment, and for his exceptional teaching.

The most common compliment Mr. Daniels received was that he goes above and beyond to make sure all his students understand a concept before moving on to the next.

We were very happy to honor this hard-working math teacher with his second Teacher of the Month award.

Ingredients:

• salt & black pepper

• 3 skin-on, bone-in chicken breast halves
