Relative Location

• One location in relation to (or compared) to another location.

• More easily determined by using compass references.

• Relative location can change depending on what a location is in relation or compared to.

• Example:– Badger is WEST of Gander.– Badger is EAST of Springdale.– St. John’s is 424 Km EAST of Grand Falls-Windsor– Yukon is NORTH of British Columbia

Lines of Latitude

• Also called “Parallels”• Parallel, horizontal lines on globe.• Determine location/position North or

South (of the equator). • Go from Equator (0o lat.) to North Pole

(90o North Latitude) and South Pole (90o South Latitude)

• Increase by increments of 10o

• Equator is the MOST prominent.• Equator divides world into Northern and

Southern Hemispheres.

Lines of Longitude

• Also called “Meridians”• Vertical lines that go from Pole to Pole on

globe.• Determine location/position East or West (of the

Prime Meridian). • Prime Meridian is 0o at Greenwich, England.• Meridians go from 0o to 180o West and 0o to

180o East.• The Prime Meridian divides world into Eastern

and Western Hemispheres.
