Griffin Legal John I Dent action for round eight saw more drama, excitement and a shock win from the Queanbeyan Whites against the Uni-Norths Owls. Not that the result was that surprising, but the manner and score, 50-12 and the fact that it was in Uni-Norths backyard certainly made this a statement win for the Whites.

Recent recruit Rian Auston’s hat-trick stole the show for Queanbeyan, who also benefitted from key contributions from Brumbies duo Lachlan McCaffrey and Matty Lucas. The bonus-point victory didn’t do enough for the Whites to leapfrog either Wests or Uni-Norths, but the nature of the win begs the question, are Queanbeyan now a dark horse in this competition?

We’ll know a little more after their matchup with Easts today at Griffith Oval, though they would likely been favourites there anyway given the Suburbs struggles so far in 2019.

East’s latest loss came at the hands of Royals, 69-15 at Phillip Oval. Star rake Suita Tai’s brace of tries rubberstamped the win for Royals with the Blue-Baggers maintaining their unbeaten record. Despite their spotless resume, it’s been far from plain sailing for the 2017 Champions, though this past week they began to look like the premiership contenders they clearly are. Still, even though the result was marvellous, Royals remain in second-place after Gungahlin kept up their own spotless resume against Wests.

That game today should be a cracker! Beat the Eagles, and the Blue-Baggers go top, but if Gungahlin can once again pass the test, and repeat their 2018 home result over Royals, and they’ll open up a gap atop the First-grade ladder and all-but assure a place in the playoffs, even this early in the year.

The only thing that will stop the Eagles reaching the postseason will be themselves. Even not at their best at Jamison Enclosed last week, the leaders were able to beat Wests with a bonus-point, putting the Lions scrum to the sword from minute one.

Wests did show plenty of spark in that game. In truth, other than the set-piece exchanges, Wests were every bit as good as the Eagles last week, and despite being down to 13 players at one stage, remained competitive throughout.

A trip to Vikings today means things don’t get easier for Wests, but what an opportunity to kickstart their season, given the fact that they should have beaten the Champions in round two. For the Vikings, early season struggles have started to subside, and victory over Wests consolidate their position in the top-three with Owls on the bye.

RUGBY IN THE ACT – THE EARLY YEARS: PART 2ACT players have bene prominent in NSW Country Wek competitions since they started in 1951. Initially, they joined players from Wagga, Illawarra and Goulburn to form the Southern NSW team. The ACT Rugby Union became independent and separated from the Country Rugby Union in 1974. ACT teams have since competed as a separate zone during Country Week. The ACTRU’s sphere of influence includes Cooma, Goulburn and Crookwell, but not Yass. Since its admission to the ARU as a full member, the ACT has played regular matches against Queensland, Sydney and NSW Country. In 1983 it joined NSW Country to field a combined team against Sydney.

Leading players developed in the ACT include Wallaby fullback Peter Ryan, Test centre Peter Scott, Test fullback Bob Brown, Test backs Dave Grimmond, John Weatherstone, Michael O’Connor, David Campese and Rod Batterham, and international forwards, Owen Butler and Stuart Macdougall. A Canberra restaurant takes pride in this international representation and lists “Fillet Campese” on its menu which a wag from Queensland suggested should be extended to include “Cauliflower Pilecki” in honour of the forward’s famous ears.

Since it was constituted in 1937, the ACTRU has been one pf Australia’s fastest developing Rugby bodies, with growth matching the rapid increase in Canberra’s population. From four original clubs, the ACTRU had grown to

fourteen clubs and 49 teams in 1983, with 1053 registered senior players. In addition, a strong Schools Union operates in the district, conducts four competitions and participates in the Australian National Schoolboys’ Carnival. Test breakaway Simon Poidevin, from St. Patrick’s College. Goulburn, member of a local grazing family, played in the Associated Colleges Competition from which he won selection in the 1976 Australian Schoolboy’s team.

The strength of the ACTRU has been affected frequently by postings of servicemen stationed in the area. For several years immediately after World War II, RAN players stationed at HMAS Harman, and RAAF teams at Fairbairn RAAF Base, provided strong competition. A team from the Australian Forestry Commission School reached first grade status for a time and played in the 1949 Grand Final. Recently, a major concern of ACTRU officials has been the decline in playing standards of teams from the Royal Military College, which reflects an emphasis on academic achievement at Duntroon.

Canberra Royals rose to first grade status from the junior ranks of Northern Suburbs under the guidance of Jack Waters, who died in 1968, the year Royals won their sixth premiership. Then, Ainslie, a club drawn from junior teams in the northern suburbs, began to turn in promising displays, only to be merged with the fast-developing Downer club, reconstituted as Majura Rugby Club. Lyneham, a club of former students from Lyneham High School, did well for a time but was re-formed as the Western Districts Club. The Queanbeyan Rugby Club was formed in 1954, and has since been a force in ACT Rugby, backed by a flourishing licenced club. Queanbeyan Club won its third successive Canberra premiership in 1983.

Not the least of the ACTRU’s strength has bene the Goulburn Club, which, like eight other Canberra clubs, was supported by its financially profitable licenced club. Goulburn, one of the oldest rugby centres in Australia, played matches against Yass and Taralga in the 1870s, and delegates from the Goulburn Football Club, formed in 1873, attended the foundation meeting of the Southern Rugby Union in 1874. An international match between a Central Southern XV and the Reverend Matthew Mullineux’s British Isles team was played in Goulburn in 1899. Strong junior and School rugby competitions are conducted every winter, and the Rugby Club runs its own local radio session.

WESTS SEVENTIES FOUR-PEAT Wests Rugby club had burst onto the consciousness of the Canberra rugby community in the late sixties and early seventies as they began to build towards a dynasty that would see them scoop four John I Dent Cup trophies in a row by the middle of the decade. Having reached, and won, their first Grand Final in 1969, a 27-6 defeat of Ainslie at Manuka Oval, the team repeated the feat again a year later with a similarly comprehensive win over Royals in the 1970 decider (27-3).

There followed two fallow years before the club began what was to be their greatest era in Canberra rugby, dominating the local scene with four Grand Final wins of equally impressive nature. These were no tight, abrasive contests however, as Wests won with something to spare on each of the occasions they were to pick up the trophy.

Indeed, but for a lip-up against Royals in the 1977 Grand Final they were beaten 16-0, Wests might have been looking at a special six-in-a-row feat as they were back in the winners circle a year later, claiming the 1978 crown with a 17-9 win over Queanbeyan Whites at Rugby

Park. But back to the start of the streak and the 1973 showdown with Easts.

The two teams had gone toe-to-toe at the top of the ladder that year with Wests emerging in first place by virtue of six competition points more than runner’s-up Easts. The Lions emphasised their superiority in the Final, roaring their way to a huge 33-10 win in an entertaining match.

Further Grand Final wins came in 1974 as RMC were held scoreless in an 18-0 triumph, before Norths were put to the sword a year later, a confident and exciting Wests swamping their opposition 25-9 in the big match. The streak was complete in 1976 when Royals were downed 24-13. After the 1978 success, Wests had to wait until 1993 for another Grand Final win. The seventies really were a Golden era for the club.

Goulburn Dirty Reds will face a test of their title credentials this weekend when they welcome fourth-placed Hall bushrangers to Simon Poidevin Rugby Park in what promises to be an exhilarating clash in the First Division First Grade competition. Both teams will enter the fixture in confident mood following wins in Round 7.

League -leading Goulburn were in great form once more as they secured a bonus-point win over Cooma with a thumping 54-12 success. Hamish McCormack led the way with two of the Dirty Reds eight tries in a consummate display from the Goulburn side.

Henry Cooper, Jackson Reardon, Alec Palmer, Jordan Lees, Matthew Spratley and Michael McKillop all found their way across the Cooma try-line as the visitors flexed their muscles and showed why they are considered favourites for the crown this season. Deadly goal-kicker Mikael Webber landed seven conversions to bolster the score as Goulburn pushed past the half-century.

Tuggeranong Vikings racked up a big score themselves as they hammered Easts 69-0 at Viking Park with Cameron Shaw claiming four tries in a eleven-try bonus-point win for the home team.

At the top end of the ladder, second-placed ADFA slumped to a disappointing 14-20 defeat to Canberra Royals at Phillip Oval, the win bringing the Royals right into finals contention. Gungahlin Eagles and Hall Bushrangers meanwhile, kept up their pursuit of the Dirty Reds by claiming victories.

The Eagles thrashed Uni-Norths owls at the Australian National University grounds, scoring seven tries in a 47-0 away win with Mitchell Colbert credited with two. The Bushrangers were narrower winners, 28-24 away to Wests in a clash that could have gone either way, the boot of Connor O’Donoghue proving the difference as each team scored four tries. O’Donoghue’s conversion of all four of the Hall efforts sealed the win.

This weekend, second-placed ADFA travel to ANU to tackle eight-placed Owls, Vikings host Wests, the Eagles meet the Royals in what should be a humdinger, RMC welcome Cooma whilst Easts are home to Queanbeyan Whites.

REDBACKS SPRING SURPRISE ON BOARSBraidwood Redbacks achieved the result of the round in the South Coast Monaro Second Divison on the weekend as they defeated Batemans Bay Boars 22-7 in Braidwood to close the gap on the side from the Coast, who remain in fourth-place on the ladder.

The Redbacks were in excellent form and frustrated the visitors at every avenue, the usually free-scoring Boars restricted to just one converted try, whilst the home side went over for three tries of their own. The Redbacks will have another chance to upset the odds this weekend when they welcome the unbeaten Taralga Tigers to their home venue but face a difficult task.

A hat-trick of tries from Thomas Croker led the Tigers to their eighth win of the season as they defeated Yass Rams 45-14, scoring seven tries in total to rack up yet another bonus-point victory. Nicholas Bennett, Samuel Conlon, Benjamin Thomas and Brendyn Lonesborough added to Croker’s treble with Joel Croker converting four tries and Conlon one. The Tigers continue to purr and look almost unstoppable as the season begins to take shape.

Jindabyne Bushpigs might have plenty to say about that before the end of the season however, as they continued their chase at the top with a 48-0 defeat of a struggling Broulee Dolphins at Captain Oldrey Park. Matthew Caldwell claimed three tries and Mat Bruton two in a eight-try winning performance by the Bushpigs. They travel to Yass in Round 9 whilst the Dolphins are in Bungendore.

The Mudchooks themselves will be keen to notch up a win after falling narrowly to a 38-25 loss to the Crookwell Dogs in Round 8. Samuel Elliott and Charles Zouch were among the Dogs try-scorers in an entertaining match for the watching spectators. Lochlan Bannerman crossed twice for the defeated Mudchooks who are fifth on the ladder, seven points off finals football after playing eight matches.

OWLS AND EASTS LOOKING TO CONTINUE FORMRound 4 of the ACT Women’s Premiership kick off this weekend, seeing both top of the ladder teams take on those occupying the lower reaches of the table.
