CANCER SERVICES OF NORTHEAST INDIANA Compassion, Knowledge, Support June 2010 cover story Volume 66 Issue 2 C are lines Life is a Journey, not a Destination... Don’t Stop Believing! by Mary Jo Wolf y cancer journey began in November 2008, when I discovered a lump in my right breast. I didn’t panic and went about my evening as scheduled, but the thought of that strange mass lingered in my mind. I had been through an unwanted divorce in April, my family lived 6 hours away, and suddenly, I felt alone. I went to my doctor on Monday, she examined me and immediately set an appointment at the Breast Diagnostic Center. On Tuesday, I had a mammogram and an ultrasound. There was fluid around the mass that needed to be drained, but unfortunately, the radi- ologist couldn’t get it to drain. I had a total of five biop- sies that day and then made an appointment with a surgeon who would give me the results. I went to each of these appointments alone, hoping it was nothing. I didn’t believe that I might have cancer and I didn’t want to alarm anyone. When I met with the surgeon, my friend Becki came with me. She was diagnosed with breast cancer the pre- vious year and I knew I needed support. The diagnosis was DCIS (ductile carcinoma in situ - noninvasive breast cancer). Becki started to cry and I was in shock. A mil- lion questions went through my mind. The surgeon rec- ommended a lumpectomy. He would remove the lump and send it to the lab for an exact diagnosis. He was fairly certain that no more treatment would be needed. My surgery was scheduled for Monday, November 24. My only child’s 21st birthday would be the next day. How was I going to tell her that I had cancer? Surgery went as scheduled and my wonderful daughter gave up her birthday celebration to take care of me. Unfortunately, at my follow-up appointment, the surgeon reluctantly informed me that another surgery would be necessary because the margins were not clear (cancer cells were still present), and the mass test- ed positive for triple negative invasive breast cancer. A week later, I had a second surgery, followed by M complications. The incision would not heal; there was infection and a lot of pain. I met with my oncologist and she explained that I needed 20 weeks of chemo. Although my cancer didn’t spread to the lymph nodes, they treated it aggressively as if it did. On a follow-up visit with the surgeon, he discovered another lump in the same breast. More ultrasounds and biopsies were done on the second lump, and the sur- geon recommended a double mastectomy. After much research and discussion with family and friends, I con- curred. My bilateral radical mastectomy was scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2009. I wanted the cancer out of me once and for all. Besides, new breasts at my age didn’t sound like such a bad idea. I always try to see the bright side. I met with the surgeon, oncologist, and plas- tic surgeon to discuss the plan for the next several weeks and months. It was surreal going over the surgery options with the plastic surgeon. The thought of having my breasts removed and reconstructed was overwhelm- ing. My plastic surgeon talked with me as if he was talk- ing to his own wife, mother, or sister. I trusted him and believed I was in good hands. In early January, I took a tour of Cancer Services. It continued on page 4 Mary Jo Wolf, breast cancer survivor A Client Story:

A new massage program for people

with cancer

After much anticipation and planning, Cancer Servicesis pleased to unveil its new massage program, CaringTouch.

Twenty-three local, certified massage therapistsrecently completed an intensive, three-day training pro-gram with nationally-recognized trainer Tracy Walton,LMT, MS. As a part of that training, each have agreed toprovide 12 hours of volunteer time to Cancer Services tohelp launch Caring Touch for CSNI’s clients.

Beginning July 1, 30-minute massage appointmentswill be available to clients and caregivers. There is nocost for these massages. Current clients and their primarycaregiver may call an advocate at 484-9560 to schedule amassage. If a local cancer patient is not currently regis-tered with Cancer Services and would like to experiencean oncology massage, he or she may call for an intro-ductory session.

There is an explosion of interest in North Americaregarding the use of massage therapy as an adjunct to tra-ditional cancer treatments. What massage therapists andtheir cancer patient clients have known for years throughexperience is now being validated in medical researchstudies. Between 1900 and 1990, there was an average of31 citations per year in scientific literature referring tocancer and massage or oncology and massage. Thatnumber grew to 294 citations per year from 1991 to 2000,and 1,370 in 2008.

Numerous studies now link gentle, non-invasive mas-sage for cancer patients with significant reductions inpain, fatigue, nausea, depression, and anxiety. Studiesreport improvements in some or all of these symptomsby unexplained mechanisms following massage inter-ventions. It is probable that research will establish thatthe missing link between massage and cancer symptomimprovement is stress reduction. As any cancer patientwill tell you, having cancer is one of life's most stressfulexperiences. And stress magnifies negative health issues. Many people find massage is an antidote to stress. It fol-lows that many people find that massage can reducetheir symptoms.

Participate in your own healing. Feel and sense whatCaring Touch is all about.

was so comforting to meet with my Advocate and find outhow the organization could help me. Throughout my jour-ney, Cancer Services was there – supplying tape and band-ages and a hospital bed for when I returned home. Theyalso offered much needed emotional support. Even today,as a cancer survivor, when I walk through the front door ofCancer Services to volunteer, Ifeel peace and comfort.

I had a double mastectomyand reconstruction as scheduled. The morning of my surgery, mydaughter laid in the hospital bedwith me until they took me backto the operating room. As theyrolled me down the hall, I couldhear my daughter and my momtelling me they loved me. Thenext thing I knew, it was 10 ½hours later and I was in intensivecare. I had 8 drainage tubes, apain pump in my stomach, and I was hooked up to a mor-phine machine for pain. Along with having my breastsremoved, I had an incision from hip to hip. They used thefat, muscle, and tissue from my stomach to create my newbreasts.

After my hospital stay, I returned home to find a hos-pital bed set up in my living room, supplied by CancerServices. Because of the hip-to-hip incision, it was impos-sible for me to lie flat on my back. I believe the hospitalbed helped my recovery immensely. When I was fairlywell recovered from surgery, I began chemo. I was backat work and things were going as well as could be expect-ed. After several treatments, I developed Hand and FootSyndrome –a possible side effect of chemo. In April, my

employer let me go because I couldn’t perform the dutiesof my job. I clung to hope, faith, and the thought thatmaybe what I had been through could help someone elsesome day. My dear friends had a benefit for me in May,and I was able to finish my treatment without worryingabout how I was going to keep a roof over my head. I had

my final chemo treatment inJuly of last year with reconstruc-tion performed 2 weeks aftermy final treatment. After Iregained my physical strength, Istarted to look for work, startinga new job in October of 2009.

I’m now a one-year breastcancer survivor. From April of2008 to April of 2009, I wentthrough a devastating divorce, cancer, and the loss of my job.Today, I’m a woman of greathope. I have a heart full of grat-

itude and look for ways to give back every day. Do Istruggle at times? Yes. Am I sad at times because my bodyis scarred, my breasts have no sensation, and my life willnever be the same because I had cancer? Yes. At the sametime, the truth for me is this: what gives my life and thefact I had cancer meaning and purpose is being of serviceto others. Today, I’m a volunteer for Cancer Services. Ican’t think of a better way to change the liability of hav-ing cancer into an asset. I believe that great good cancome from great suffering. Most of all, I believe I wasstripped of everything so I could have a new foundationon which to build a new life. Next year, my beautifuldaughter will graduate from Purdue University and I willbe 50 and fabulous! Here’s to my new life!

Dedicated volunteers, Eugenia Wellman and Roger Reed

Eugenia “Jean” Wellmanhas been sewing bedpads forCancer Services for 51 years.Jean is a member of thesewing group at St. MatthewsLutheran Church and remem-bers that she first began mak-ing bedpads when she waspregnant with her daughterand the sewing group hosteda baby shower for her.

The St. Matthew’s grouprecently celebrated Jean’s

service there. The youngest member in the group,Sherry Monahan, used the bedpads to care for her for-mer mother-in-law and said how grateful they were forthem. She began sewing herself, then had to quit. When her mother, who was in charge of the group, was diagnosed with cancer, Sherry got some bedpadsfor her. After her mother passed away, she decided tobegin sewing again and rejoined the group as a wayof “giving back”.

Roger Reed is retired fromGeneral Electricand when he andhis wife aren’tbusy traveling, helikes to keep busydoing somethingwith his hands. After taking aclass at Jo-Ann’s,Roger learnedabout their special“Knitting Caps forCancer Day”. That day resulted in more than 100 chemocaps for local people with cancer. But, Roger didn’t stopthere, using a Knifty Knitter, he has made and donated135 chemo caps to Cancer Services of NortheastIndiana—and that’s in addition to the winter caps andscarves he makes and gives to local churches and com-munity organizations.

Thanks Jean and Roger! What you do makes a dif-ference for local people with cancer.

Cancer exercise is a form of fitness specificallydesigned for individuals currently in treatment orpost-treatment. The goal is not for participants togain muscle or to lose weight, but rather to builda stronger, healthier mind and body. Individualswith any level of exercise experience are welcomeand will find that this program is not an intenseworkout but a time to join others and be physical-ly active. Participants are able to stop if they feelfatigued and resume when they are ready. Eachsession will end in a cool down and finish withrelaxing breathing techniques. Family memberswelcome!
