Note to TeacherHey there, friend! Thanks for your purchase of these Valentine’s Candy Math & More Activities. These activities are nearly ready to go for you! All that’s left to do is print, copy, and get some candy to use for this version of the activities. These activities are perfect to use all month long or for one fun and educational Christmas party! They can be used for whole group instruction, centers, small groups, etc. They can be used as one time use worksheets (the directions are based on this). Another idea is to laminate them so they can be re-used often with dry erase markers.

Before the worksheets, I have included some instructions and tips for using the activities. Please read over these instructions BEFORE you begin the activities.

Once you’ve read over the instructions, choose whether to use the color or black and white worksheets. You will find all of the black and white worksheets first in the packet, followed by the full color worksheets.

If you’re looking for more Valentine’s activities, check out my February ELA Sub Plans! These are full of fun ELA activities for the month of February and are perfect for substitutes, but you can also use the activities yourself, too! You may also love my Secret Valentine and Heart Attack activities for this month. And if you love these activities, be sure to check out my similar Candy Math & More activities for other holidays (such as Halloween, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter!)

If you still have any questions after reading through the instructions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Happy Holidays! -Kelsey

Activity InstructionsValentine’s Candy Count & Sort: This activity is where the students will sort their candies by color. This will introduce the students to doing math with the Conversation Hearts. Students will also refer to this sheet for future activities. Hand out the bags of candy to the students and have them record how many of each color they have on this page. This will be their reference sheet for many of the other activities to make things go a bit faster.

Valentine’s Candy Graphing: Using the data from the Count and Sort page, the students will complete a bar graph showing how many candies they have of each color. Each box represents 2 candies. They will color it in the bars to represent the numbers of each candy. On the black and white version, they should also color in the candies on the bottom of the page.

Valentine’s Comparing Numbers: Students will need scissors and glue for this activity. First, students will cut out the crocodiles to have them ready for the activity. Then, the students will place their candies into the appropriate boxes on the page. Then, they will compare the numbers on each side. They should glue the correct crocodile between the two colors. Remind them that the crocodile wants to eat the side with more candies!

Activity InstructionsValentine’s Candy Addition: Students will be doing addition using their Conversation Hearts! They will write the number of Conversation Hearts they have next to each color. They may count them again, or use their Count and Sort page as a reference. Then, they will add them together and write the number in the box. For extra fun, they may place one of their candies next to the matching colors! Be sure to monitor the students and check their understanding throughout the activity.

Valentine’s Candy Subtraction: Students will be doing subtraction using their Conversation Hearts! To begin, the students should write the total number of ALL of their candies in the first box of every equation. Then, they will write the number of the appropriate color in the next box. They will subtract the total number of each color from the total, and write the answer in the final box. For extra fun, they may place on of their candies next to the matching colors! Be sure to monitor the students and check their understanding throughout the activity.

Activity Instructions

“Love Letter” Fill In The Blank: In this partner activity, students will take turns being the scribe or the person to fill in the blanks. The scribe will read the directions for each blank (adjective, noun, verb, or draw a conversation heart) and the other student will give a word or draw a random conversation heart and read it. They do not get to see until the letter is finished. Once it is done, they will read the story. Last, they will repeat and switch roles.

“Write Your Own Love Letter” Writing Activity: Similar to the Love Letter assignment, students write their own pretend love letter. Use as many of the conversation heart phrases as you can! Students should use proper letter form.

“Design Your Own Conversation Heart!” Art & Writing: For this activity, the students will pretend that they got their first job at the fictional “Christmas Candy Factory”. They will need to come up with what kind of candy they would create. They will fill in a graphic organizer, write about it, and illustrate their candy on a separate page.
