They included 800 staff from 150 exhibiting companies and with indi- vidual visits exceeding 9,600, the three-day event was the largest-ever canmaking tech- nology show and the most successful exhi- bition for the metal packaging industry ever held in Asia. Cannex was officially opened by Zhou Yunjie, director, and Zhang Hong, secre- tary general of the China Packaging Fed- eration Metal Container Association (CPFMCA); Xia Qifeng, consultant to the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, and Dr Li Jian Hui, director general of Guangdong Province’s Department of Civil Affairs; along with Allan Sayers and Mónica Higuera, pub- lisher and editor of The Canmaker respec- tively. At the opening ceremony, Xia Qifeng said that Cannex is “a premier and pro- fessional exhibition for canmaking indus- try, and also a marketplace for exchanges and cooperation in international canmak- ing industry. The products, equipment and technology exhibited here reflect the latest technology and direction of development in international canmaking industry. “It has thoroughly demonstrated China’s economic strength and its attrac- tion to global exhibitors,” Xia added. Soon after ORG Packaging’s chairman Zhou Yunjie had helped with the opening ceremony at Cannex he revealed why the Beijing-based canmaker is one of the key suppliers to the food and beverage industry in China. Already a leading manufacturer of three-piece cans, ORG started up its first two-piece aluminium beverage can plant in April, a project that had been announced at Interpack last year. Engineered by Stolle Machinery’s Global Systems Group, the plant at Zhejiang has capacity to make 700 million cans a year, supplying local brewers and PepsiCo, with qualification trials for Coca-Cola products in hand. Now ORG is well on the way to setting up a second two-piece plant, this time at Guangzhou in the south, said Zhou Yuan, vice chairman of ORG, who was accompa- nying Zhou Yunjie, and its production is expected to start early next year. ORG has been dramatically growing its capacity to make a variety of three-piece tinplate cans and is a key supplier to ener- gy drink producer Red Bull in China. It is one of a number of three-piece canmakers in China that have expanded into two- piece beverage cans, such as CPMC, Shengxing and Gaosen. Jozef Salaerts, president of Singapore- based Crown Asia-Pacific, was visiting Cannex along with a number of Crown executives, just as the announcement was made that a second beverage can plant was being planned for Cambodia. While demand for drinks cans in China will be met by Crown with 11 plants by the end of 2013, it has not overlooked growth in South East Asia with lines being added at its plants in Vietnam, where it is the leading canmaker, and a second line being planned for start up at its Phnom Penh plant in Cambodia early next year. The second plant, at Sihanoukville, looks like it will be huge, with Crown saying that it will accommodate a number of production lines, the first of which will come on stream at about the same time as line 2 at Phnom Penh with initial capacity to make 725 mil- lion 33cl aluminium cans a year. While the capital Phnom Penh is themajor conurbation, Sihanoukville on theGulf of Thailand coast is the primary com-mercial port, making it ideal for shippingcans to neighbouring markets.

“Cambodia is growing at a steady paceand this in turn is driving increaseddemand for our customers’ products, andwe are experiencing a preference on theirpart for two-piece aluminium beveragecans,” said Salaerts. “This newest invest-ment is supported by a long term contractwith a major brewer and is consistent withthe company’s growth plans.”

Iran’s Sherkate TULK Iranian (STI)revealed at Cannex that it would startinstallation of a beverage can line usingToyo Ultimate Can (TULC) technologylicensed from Toyo Seikan Kaisha.

The first such operation outside the FarEast – hinted at by Toyo Seikan’s chairmanHirofumi Miki some years ago – STI usesTULK in its name, rather than TULC.STI’s president and owner Babak Tashako-ri was at Cannex with plant managerAmirGhafouri.

The dry-DWI TULC production offersenvironmental benefits because no lubri-cants are used in the can body forming pro-cess, eliminating the need for washerchemicals and waste water treatment. Thecanstock is pre-coated with polyester sothere is no need for liquid-applied coatings,or for curing ovens which consume energy, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

STI will produce 25cl and 33cl cans suit-able for non-alcoholic beer, carbonated bev-erages, fruit juices and mineral water.

Chinese aluminium aerosol canmakerEuro Asia is expanding its operation atZhongshan with two monobloc canmakinglines, the company’s managing director WT Lin said.

EuroAsia’s facility currently features 11canmaking lines, and by the end of 2012the company plans to add a 200cpm linesupplied by Germany’s Mall + Herlanalong with a refurbished line. Lin addedthat he was at Cannex to look for new tech-nology to manufacture aerosol cans.

Germany’s Hinterkopf showcased arange of cans printed with its prototypedigital system that will be commerciallylaunched next year.

Hinterkopf’s new system enables 360-deg printing without an overlap using ahigh resolution of 600dpi, said managingdirectorAlexander Hinterkopf. Microtextdown to a height of one point may also beprinted, which is ideal for legal informa-tion, he noted.

Tactile effects, and gold and silver with-out hot stamping can also be achieved, while for more intense colours, the systemallows an ink layer of up to six micronsthick, compared to one or two microns inoffset printing, Hinterkopf explained.“This is more than printing. It’s surfacecovering.”

Spot varnish can be used to give a 3Deffect and the system is said to realisticallyreproduce face tones, flowers and fruit, tar-geting the cosmetics and beverage sectors.“Everything ispossiblewithdigital,”hesaid.

Coatings that offer low environmentalimpact for canmaking operations are to bemade for the first time in the Chinese mar-ket byAkzoNobel, which announced theproducts at Cannex.

The special powder-based coatings areused for protecting the weld on three-piecetinplate can bodies. They are amongst arange ofAkzoNobel coatings product appli-cations that include two-piece beveragecans which were being used to promotethe company at Cannex.

AkzoNobel’s Packaging Coatings divi-sion will invest in manufacturing capaci-ty at its existing plant near Shanghai, representing what it says is the first timepowder coatings for food contact applica-tions have been produced in China.

The country’s three-piece food and bev-erage can market, of which around 80 per-cent uses powder side stripe coatings forweld repair, is currently supplied onlyfrom imports.

Canmakers in China began convertingto powder coatings just under a decadeago, replacing solvent-based coatingsdue to the better performance withaggressive products including some ready-to-drink tea beverages, and improvedenvironmental-friendliness.

AkzoNobel will also more than doubleits production of internal spray coatingsfor two-piece beverage cans at its plant atShanghai.

Three-piece can manufacturing equip-ment specialistCanMan ran live demon-strations of its X1 welder, before the unitwas shipped to Taiwanese canmaker KingCan after the show.

King Can, based at Taichung City, pro-duces three-piece tinplate cans for a rangeof products including pickles, powdered

milk, flour, tea, and snacks. Its portfolioincludes lever-lid ends and shaped cans.

Amongst the equipment on display onSen-con’s booth was the first End ProgressionGauge to be sold by the company to China.

The unit was one of a number of testand inspection systems being showcasedby Sencon, and was due to be shipped tothe customer – a China-based beverageend manufacturer – after the exhibitionclosed. To assist its business in China, Sen-con revealed that it was in the process ofsetting up a sales and support office inHong Kong.
