Festo Kanungha News

I hope you are all fine over there. Here we had great time with Lydia it has been real very good for her to come over here as she had leant a lot and get some experience of life in Kilimatinde. She enjoyed being at a football match in Jamhuri stadium in Dodoma between Dar es Salaam Young African against Police Dodoma and Dar young African won 1-0. However I am very busy but we managed to do many things together and keep her busy.

We are near to the Form Four National Examinations which will start on the 4th of October. We will also be having the Form Ones 2011 entrance exams on 25th of September and after the exams those who will be selected we plan to have pre-form one course starting on 18th of October to the end of the term in December.

We had Parents Day on 28th August it was very good the parents appreciate what we are doing and the changes which are happening at school. I am very glad that parents have positive attitude towards the school. Hopefully things will be good in the future Wishing you all the best, Yours with much love, Festo Festo Kanungha was with us for a year 2005-2006 and returned to Tanzania to study for a degree which he completed in 2009. He is now head teacher of St. John’s Secondary School in the village of Kilimatinde.

Asylum Seekers

The N.E.R.S. (North of England Refugee Service) which is based at 19 Villiers Street (the old `Junior Tech' building - see separate article on next page) provides a one-stop service giving asylum seekers advice and assistance with their claims and helping them to find their way around living in Sunderland and the UK. It also helps those who have been granted refugee status access h o u s i n g , e d u c a t i o n a n d employment.

The Service runs a drop-in centre at St. Mary's RC Church and also tries to promote fr iendship and understanding between young asylum seekers and local young people. Asylum seekers are forbidden by law from working and they receive £5 per day in benefits. Some do not receive this in cash but via an `Azure card' which is topped up with £35 per week which can only be spent in certain stores. It cannot be used for bus fares or in the market, charity shops or pound shops, where goods are cheaper. Asylum seekers must live where they are sent and can be moved at any time so friendships and support networks, such as with solicitors, may be broken.

These things are very precious to those alone in a strange country where they don't understand the systems or the language and when they are worried about the outcome of their cases and about their families back home.

The Refugee Service is appealing for various foodstuffs such as tinned fish and tomatoes and rice as well as toiletries such as shower gel and toothpaste. Baby clothes and warm winter clothing are also needed.

If you can help with any of these requests please see Liz Tinker. Our Harvest Festival Appeal & Auction this year will raise funds towards the work of the NERS.

St

A Ramble Round Villiers Street

When I went to look for the North of England Refugee Service, I found it was in the quite imposing building -especially compared to the rest of the street- which some people will remember was the Junior Technical School until the late 1950s. However the building has an interesting history going back before this nearly 200 years to 1825. It was built as a Presbyterian chapel - St. George's - by a congregation from Robinson Lane in the East End whose existing building needed extensive repairs. The original estimate for the building was £1,500 but unfortunately this rose to £4,100 (does this ring bells!) and they had only raised £1,250. They were very fortunate in their minister Revd. John Thornville Paterson, who led the congregation for nearly 40 years by which time the debt had been paid and the congregation had grown considerably. He was very interested in education which resulted in the erection of the New Academy, which is the building next door to the church.

Interestingly Dr. Paterson lived for a time in Rectory Cottage, described as "an appendage" of Bishopwearmouth Rectory on the site of the Empire Theatre. In the 1880s with the growth in their congregation, they decided to build another new church, St. George's, Belvedere Road, seating 990. Sadly this is now proving far too large for the present day congregation. The Villiers Street chapel was purchased by another Presbyterian congregation and re-named St. James. Their old building, Smyrna Chapel, was sold to St. Paul's, Hendon who needed a church hall when their parish was sub-divided by the erection of St. Ignatius' church. This was a large building, providing not only a hall but also accommodation for a caretaker and (separately!) for a Church Army sister with a fierce cat. In the 1930s about 80 children would assemble in the hall and march to St. Paul's once a month on a Sunday morning.

Organ Recital

For 26 years, Mary Haynes has been secretary of the Sunderland Minster Branch of the Children's Society, ably assisted by Una and Bob Jones, and many others over the years.

Unfortunately, owing to health problems, Mary is unable to continue this work and has handed over the reigns to me. Lets hope I can fill her shoes and continue the good work. Bob and Una have kindly agreed to continue their help and support, so the box collections will carry on as normal, but can be left at the Minster Office or with Bob and Una Jones. The Children's Society is all about providing help and support to the most vulnerable children in our society. If you would like to know more about the charity, or start off a collection box, please contact me here at the Minster office. Mary has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone who has supported her charity over the years. This church has been a great champion of the charity and I hope, with your help, this will continue in the future.

In 1919 Villiers Street ceased to be a chapel and the New Academy building was opened as the Junior Technical School, providing a 3 year course for boys entering the shipbuilding, engineering, building or allied trades. In 1922 the chapel building itself was adapted to accommodate 250 pupils. Lessons lasted from 9.00am to 12pm and from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. There was no playground and therefore no `breaks' though pupils did travel to fields at Plains Farm for `games'.

The building continued in use until 1959 when the Technical School moved to a new building at Southmoor. Villiers Street was still owned by the local authority and various higher education courses such as plumbing were provided there for a time.

However if anyone knows to what other uses the building has been put in the last 50 years I'd be interested to know.

Thanks to Ken Carruthers and Rita Baxter for some of the information in this article. Liz Tinker Mr. W. Cox taught at Villiers Street Junior Tech before moving to Bede Grammar School for Girls!!

St Michael and All Angels

St. Michael, the Archangel Feast Day - September 29th

The name Michael signifies "Who is like to God?" (Hebrew) and was the warcry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against satan and his followers. Holy Scripture describes St. Michael as "one of the chief princes," and leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell. He has been especially honoured and invoked as patron and protector by the Church from the time of the Apostles. Although he is always called "the Archangel," many place him over all the angels - as Prince of the Seraphim.

He is mentioned by name in the Book of Daniel (10.13, 10.21, 12.1), the Book of Jude(1.9) and the Book of Revelation(12.7) in which he leads God's armies against Satan's forces during his uprising. In the book of Daniel, Michael appears as "one of the chief princes" who in Daniel's vision comes to the Archangel Gabriel's aid in his contest with the angel of Persia (Dobiel). Michael is also described there as the advocate of Israel and "great prince who stands up for the children of your [Daniel's] people".

Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices: •To fight against Satan.

•To rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death.

•To be the champion of God's people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; therefore he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights during the Middle Ages.

•To call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment

In art St. Michael is represented as an angelic warrior, fully armed with helmet, sword, and shield (often the shield bears the Latin inscription: Quis ut Deus), standing over the dragon, whom he sometimes pierces with a lance. A Sung Eucharist will be held at 10.00am on Wednesday 29th September to celebrate the Feast of St. Michael & All Angels.

Northumbrian Saints—St Aidan

Aidan was an Irish monk from the monastery St.Columba had founded on the island of Iona. He was an Irishman possibly born in Connacht.

When Aidan arrived from Iona in the year AD 635. King Oswald, at once, assigned him, as his episcopal see.

Aidan chose Lindisfarne, an island like Iona and close to the royal fortress of Bamburgh, as the seat of his diocese. King Oswald, who after his years of exile had a perfect command of Irish, often had to translate for Aidan and his monks, who did not speak English at first. When Oswald died in 642, Aidan received continued support from King Oswine of Deira and the two became close friends.

An inspired missionary, Aidan would walk from one village to another, politely conversing with the people he saw and slowly interesting them in Christianity. According to legend, the king gave Aidan a horse so that he wouldn't have to walk, but Aidan gave the horse to a beggar. By patiently talking to the people on their own level Aidan and his monks slowly brought Christianity to the Northumbrian communities. Aidan also took in twelve English boys to train at the monastery, to ensure that the area's future religious leadership would be English.

In 651 a pagan army, led by Penda, attacked Bamburgh and attempted to set its walls ablaze. According to legend, Aidan prayed for the city, after which the winds turned and blew the smoke and fire toward the enemy, repulsing them; hence his patronage for fire fighters.

Aidan's friend Oswine of Deira was murdered in 651. Twelve days later Aidan died, on 31 August, in the 17th year of his episcopate. He had become ill while at the Bamburgh castle and died leaning against the buttress of a church on a royal estate near Bamburgh.

The monastery he founded grew and helped found churches and other monasteries throughout the area. It also became a centre of learning and a storehouse of scholarly knowledge. Saint Bede the Venerable would later write Aidan's biography and describe the miracles attributed to him. Saint Aidan's feast day was on 31 August.

St Aidan’s Church, Grangetown celebrates its centenary over the coming year with a Sung Mass for the Centenary of the Laying of the Foundation Stone on Wednesday 22nd September at 7.30pm and other events culminating in September 2011 with a Flower Festival (23rd-25th) and the Centenary of the Dedication (27th).
