II Our School

Brief Introduction of the School

Canossa College, the former Canossian Convent Secondary School, was founded by the

Canossian Daughters of Charity in 1959. The Canossian sisters left Italy, their homeland,

to begin their missionary work in Hong Kong in 1860. In 1891, on Mr David Sasson's

generous donation of a piece of land of 3,000 sq.ft in Shaukeiwan, the Canossian Sisters'

convent and a Chinese primary school were built. In 1932, a new convent and a primary

school were erected but were occupied by the Japanese and British soldiers during World

War II. In 1951, the Canossian Chinese Primary School was re-opened and the

Canossian Convent Secondary School was run in the new four-storey premises adjacent to

the primary section in 1959.

To make way for the development of Eastern district, both the secondary and primary

schools were relocated to the present premises in Quarry Bay in 1984 and renamed

Canossa College and the primary section, Canossa School (Hong Kong). Canossa

College began to offer an education in the medium of English.

The Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) of Canossa College was set up on 31

August 2013 to replace the School Management Committee.

School Premises and Facilities

The school premises not only won the 1984 Highest Honours Award in Architectural

Design for its simplicity, harmonious colour scheme, brightness and spaciousness, but also

provide an ideal learning environment for students. The School Improvement

Programme was completed in 2004 with a new wing erected from the parking area by the

main entrance, providing more facilities for students’ learning.

There are now 25 classrooms and 18 special rooms (2 visual arts rooms, 2 computer rooms,

1 language room, 4 laboratories, 5 multi-purpose rooms, 1 needlework room, 1 cookery

room, 1 geography room and 1 student activity center). In addition, the school hall,

library, tuck shop, backyard, two multi-purpose ball courts, two covered playgrounds and

the chapel adjacent to the convent provide ample space for various student activities.

V Major Concerns (Achievements and Reflection)

Major Concern 1: Forming Students’ Good Habits and Personal Qualities

Achievements

Themes for Student Development

Different themes were set in each form to provide clear objectives and focus for student

development.

Themes and Main Strategies Adopted:

a. F.1 – Self-understanding, Self-management and Learning to Respect

Self-understanding, self-management and learning to respect were set as core or elective

themes in the F.1 Life Education lessons. From teachers’ evaluation, most of the form

teachers found the learning activities of the lessons effective in bringing out the messages

and promoting students’ thinking. 90.38% of the teachers were satisfied with students’

general manners. 78.36% of the F.1 students agreed that Life Education lessons improved

their self-control and time management skills.

Class teachers of F.1 used the 8th lesson on 13th September, 2017 (Day 1) to teach the

skills of recording homework on student handbooks. 73.93% of students agreed that they

recorded homework properly every day and 87.58% agreed that they submitted homework

on time. The submission of homework among F.1 students was a bit better this year. The

number of students who received demerits due to late homework submission this year was

less than that of last year.

Alumnae met F.1 students on New Students Orientation Day on 26th August, 2017 to share

their past experience at school. 73.88% of students appreciated alumnae’s sharing.

b. F.2 – Development of Interpersonal Skills and Nurture of Service Spirit

service learning programmes allowed the committee members of CYC to take an active

role as leaders to guide the F.2 girls to design service programmes, which enhanced their

confidence and leadership skills. Participants welcomed the service-learning programmes.

The workshop allowed them to learn more about the elderly service and the

communication skills with the elderly.

c. F.3 – Recognition of Own Strengths and Goal Setting

Aptitude Test and subject selection workshops were provided for all F.3 students. 68.22%

of students agreed that the Aptitude Test was useful for understanding themselves better,

whilst 68.99% of them found the F.3 Seminars on F.4 Subject Selection helpful to them.

69.77% of the F.3 students agreed that they could match their abilities with interests to

choose the electives to study in the NSS curriculum after participating in these

programmes.

d. F.4 – Learning through Service and Leadership Building

All F.4 students planned and carried out service programmes for different needy groups on

Experiential Learning Days.

Page 11: CANOSSA COLLEGE SCHOOL REPORT 2017 - 2018

e. F.5 – Actualization of Potentials

F.5 students took the initiative to lead and serve with their talents. Two F.5 students joined

the Global Health and Development Leadership Training Camp from July to August 2018.

They learned different skills such as leadership, advocacy, diplomacy, research, writing

and critical thinking in a mock United Nations conference in the camp. Five F.5 students

joined the Canossian Global Youth Conference 2018 in August. Students explored cultural

differences in the conference, which enhanced their confidence as young leaders. They

demonstrated strong social awareness, good analytical skills and determination to help

create a better world after the conference.

f. F.6 – Future Planning

A graduation prayer session was arranged on Christmas Celebration Day. After the mass,

Father gave blessing to each F.6 student. The whole school gathered to pray for the

graduates and gave them blessing. The Chairperson of the Student Council gave a speech

with encouragement and blessing to F.6 graduates. Each F.6 class sang a song on stage

showing gratitude to all students and teachers. F.6 students got the support and blessing

from teachers and schoolmates from the graduation prayer session. This event gave them

a chance to show their gratitude towards the school.

Regarding all the programmes held this year, 64.72% of students agreed that they became more

confident this year. 65.75% of them were active in joining activities organized by various

school clubs.

planned by the CYC, e.g. “Untold Stories” sponsored by a charity fund of “Disney Friends

for Change 2017”. Students were more aware of the elderly living alone in our society. They

also helped the elderly make friends in the community. Students could develop their

compassion and positive values through organizing different activities of this project.

d. Morning Assembly Sharing

Students shared their experience of ‘Serving God through serving others’ and ‘Learning

through service programmes on Experiential Learning Days’ in the morning assemblies. The

theme ‘Serving others’ was discussed in one of the life education lessons in F.4.

e. Student Ambassadors

Eleven senior form students served as student ambassadors in the Eastern District Secondary

Schools Expo. Moreover, Foster Prefects, Discipline Prefects, Red Cross members,

Trampoline members, Orchestra members, STEM club members and F.4 Visual Arts

students were invited to serve as student ambassadors, demonstrators and performers in the

Campus Visit. A total of 210 students (over 26% of the whole school students) participated

Reflection

Positive values in life should be strengthened among students of all forms. This could be done

through refining the materials of Life Education lessons, organizing form-based talks, workshops

and competitions to cater to the needs of students.

More student ambassadors will be invited to join various school events next year in order to

create more opportunities for students to showcase their talents and polish their leadership skills.

Since this was the first year of carrying out the ‘Reach out with a humble’ Project, students did

not develop a good habit of keeping a proper record of the service programmes joined. Teachers

could give more instructions and guidelines at the start of the project next year.

ECA advisors could consider giving students more opportunities to maximize their abilities.

They could choose and recommend students to attend programmes organized by external

institutions. There could be more coordination across different clubs, societies and teams.

Reflection

Over 85% of the F.1 students agreed that the basic training in study skills helped them learn

effectively in daily lessons.

Most of the teachers agreed that the distribution of progress reports could help them analyze

the effectiveness of teaching and learning. More than half of the junior form students thought

that the progress reports could help them know their learning progress.

All teachers tried out e-learning in their lessons. They found that e-learning activities could

really help students with different abilities in learning and the majority of them would carry out

different modes of e-learning activities in the coming years. The students’ survey also revealed

that more than 60 % of them enjoyed the e-learning activities.

More STEM related learning activities were successfully held and the emphasis on creativity

and hands-on experience appealed to students. All the participating teachers in the STEM

projects agreed that the activities could train students to solve daily life problems with practical

solutions and innovative designs. The concerned departments will continue to explore more

creative teaching ideas according to students’ interests and needs.
