Mel Brookes Goes Punk In Canowindra Community Players Musical

Canowindra’s profile of a “small town full of big surprises” has been reasserted again, this time on the stage with the local Com-munity Players’ polished and highly enjoy-able musical “TC & AJ Talent Scouts” at the Canowindra Services Club. And yet another surprise is the play’s co-author, none other than our 2014 Citizen of the Year, Ian Guihot. Ian and his fellow-writer, Cowra school-teacher and professional drummer Anthony Hamer, have treated us to a riotous tour de farce that can best be described as “Mel Brookes Goes Punk” – two failing impres-sarios who try to claw back into showbiz by forming a hit boy band. It’s their desperate casting auditions and the outlandish characters they attract that keep the audiences laughing – with Ian him-

self performing a wonderfully brilliantined torch song amongst the dining audience. This is Ian’s second year with the Players, and the first musical he’s ever written, and he’s characteristically humble about it all. “I haven’t got any acting talent,” he says, “but if you enjoy yourself on stage the acting comes out naturally.” And what about next year? Another hit mu-sical? “I’ve no idea at this point. They might not want us back again,” he laughs. Well, see what you think at the three final performances of “Talent Scouts” at the Ser-vices Club this coming Friday and Saturday and on July 5. I became acutely ill last week which neces-sitated an ambulance trip and several days in Canowindra hospital. I would like to say a big thank you for the efficient and very professional treatment I received from the ambulance and staff at the hospital. We are indeed fortunate to have such services in our small town and we need to be pro-active in our support for them .The ambulance girls Laura and Laura (no mistake) Dr Nicholas O’Ryan and the various nursing teams at the hospital are to be applauded for their care.

It is good news indeed to learn that a large dam will be constructed at ‘The Needles’ on the Belubula River. Over 5o years ago sever-al suitable sites were investigated including ‘The Needles’. An adequate water storage

would enable farmers, irrigators and Central Western towns to have a permanent supply on the Belubula River, which would also as-sist the Lachlan Valley in providing water for Forbes, Parkes and beyond. I believe this is an important step to boost food production and help drought-proof our country.

Students Cycle for Duke of Edinburgh Award

On Friday 20th June nine students from Canowindra High School set off on a two day cycling adventure with Mr Mark Edwards, Mr Andrew Phelan, Mrs Carolyn Austin and Mr Andrew Holmes as part of the School’s Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The first leg of the adventure was to ride from Canowindra High School to the end of Longs Corner Rd. This was by far the most difficult part of the trip with the students bat-tling pouring rain and robust head winds. The students were required to dig deep and push through the elements, as well as the range of emotions being experienced along the way. The second leg of the journey was to ride to Eugowra along The Escort Way, which at times is a very busy road and required the students to be on full alert. Mr Mike Harrison drove the support vehicle at the back of the pack and warned traffic of the cyclists ahead on his two-way radio. The vehicles along The Escort Way were very patient with the group,

giving the students ample space to enjoy their ride safely. After the group stopped in Eugowra for a stretch and a bite to eat they commenced the final leg for Day 1 into Gooloogong along Nanima Rd. This was a much more enjoyable experience with the open roads allowing more time to take in the beautiful country-side. The group set up camp in Gooloogong for the night and once the fog lifted in the morn-ing, commenced the trip back home along The Rivers Road. The students completed the 110km journey with a ride through the main street of Canowindra, capping off an adven-ture that they will hopefully never forget. Students involved were Joanna Balcombe, Amelia Holmes, Brooke Kinsela, Jack Work-man (Year 9), Meg Austin, Matthew Harrison, Lachlan Balcombe, Brenton Clements and Mitchell Stanley (Year 10).

Stranger DangerA recent occurrence involving a child being approached in Waddell Street Canowindra, has prompted the need for parents to inform their kids of stranger danger. Educating our children about stranger danger is very impor-tant to ensure our community remains safe.

Tips to tell your children:

Who is a stranger?Children see stranger’s everyday on the street, in the supermarket and their neigh-bourhoods. Often a bad stranger won’t look terrifying and children need to be informed of this. When not accompanied by an adult, children need to remember a stranger is any-one that your family doesn’t know well. There are identifiable people such as the police and firefighters that children know are safe stran-gers but you should also help them identify other safe strangers such as local shop own-ers.

What to do when approached by a stranger.If a stranger makes you feel unsafe use the yell and tell technique. Yell for help and re-turn to a safe area to tell someone what has happened. If a stranger ever asks you to get in their car, say no and use the yell and tell technique. Never talk to a stranger if you are alone or if they come into your yard. Go back inside and tell your parents. If a stranger calls you do not give out any personal infor-mation or let them know you are home alone. With School holidays next week it is impor-tant to let your children know the dangers of strangers. Children are often curious and need to know whom they should and shouldn’t speak to. This incident has prompt-ed police to encourage parents to discuss ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ message with their children. Enjoy the holidays and but remem-ber to inform your children of stranger dan-ger.

Canowindra Men’s Shed Joined By New Comrades In Cargo

Canowindra Men’s Shed is celebrating eight very successful years this year with teeth-ing advice, help and comradeship for the re-gion’s latest shed which opened last Friday in Cargo. Mrs Janet Price, President of the Cudal/Cargo & District Lions Club officially cut the ribbon and The Lions Club also financed the men’s shed from John Gough, Fair Dinkum Shed’s distributor from Sheds Oz in Temora. Canowindra members helped celebrate the opening and they donated a pool table to get the new group started. The Cargo Men’s Shed is hoping to be open each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays and is lo-cated at 1 Powers Street, Cargo NSW 2800. The ceremony was somewhat nostalgic for the Canowindra men, reminding them of their own start in 2006 when they set up their workshop and meeting place in the old Scout Hall that Cabonne Council had moved to their site next to the swimming pool on Lynne Street.

Since then the group has grown to 23 re-tired and not-so-retired members who’ve created a well-stocked carpentry centre producing just about everything over the years from 70 bird nesting boxes for Land-care to high quality patio furniture, including 24 doubles seats, designed by a woman in the UK. In between they’ve worked hard chasing grants and regular raffles to buy state-of-the art tools and machinery. Their main funds come from the jobs they do for outside groups, but as their president Warwick Bowd says: “We’re not here to be a commercially viable group. “We’re here for friendship, camaraderie, paying our way and keeping occupied.” And as one of the 60 to 80-year-old mem-bers puts it: “You’ve got to keep occupied at our age – or you can fall to pieces.”If you would like to get involved in the men’s shed community, please contact Warwick Bowd.

Canowindra Historical Society’s Fashion Fundraiser

A Fashion Parade of winter fashions for all ages was held at Canowindra Bowling Club on Saturday, 21st June and was a sell-out. Approximately 160 people attended the fashion parade from Canowindra, Cowra and Orange making it a great success. With the fashions provided by ‘Saffi’ of Gaskill Street Canowindra the models were arrayed with choices. Models of the day were: Jill Stone, Debbie Rice, Clarissa Ramsay, Lucy Harrison (Canowindra High School Captain), Kristy White (2013 Canowindra Miss Showgirl) and the little models were Annie Wooldridge and Sophie Phelan who all looked fabulous on the catwalk. Fashions on show featured colour-

ful winter warmers such as woolen jeans and jumpers from Toorallie, ponchos and wraps from Italian label MODA IMMAGINE, and easy wear favourites from Equinox. New to the range are fully reversible and waterproof rain-coats by MycraPac from the USA. Junior mod-els Annie and Sophie stole the show in cute fluffy animal vests by Todos. A big thanks goes to Tommy Jeff’s, The Canowindra Trad-ing Post, Saffi and Muriel Yell for their beau-tiful raffle and lucky door prizes. All money that was raised from the raffle and the entry fee went to the Historical Society. Congratu-lations to the Historical Society for organising a great fundraiser.

NBN Rollout Reaches Eugowra, But No Word On Canowindra Start

The much-anticipated National Broadband Network (NBN) is getting closer to Canowin-dra with installation work now under way to connect homes and businesses in Eugowra.But it’s still not known when Canowindra will be hooked up, with the NBN’s website rollout map advising locals to keep checking for an announcement.According to Calare MP John Cobb, work’s begun on a fixed wireless tower which will connect over 320 premises in and around Eugowra. It’s estimated it’ll be a year before

the system can provide advanced phone and broadband hook-ups.It’s the latest of 14 towers already servic-ing more than 2,800 customers throughout Calare electorate.He says the total rollout “will service the communities around Canowindra, Cudal, Cargo, Molong, Millthorpe, Orange and now Eugowra as well as Oberon.“The fixed wireless network will utilise ad-vanced 4G technology to deliver speeds of up to 25 megabits per second.”

First of all you need to organize a babysitter, this is the perfect time to call up grandparents and ask them to come visit, or maybe your sister, brother or your hubby owe you a long lost favor? Be pampered with a facial to relieve the stress of school holidays or indulge with a

manicure to make you feel glamorous. Make time to relax, as it will definitely make a dif-ference. Call up your girlfriends and organize a coffee date, there are plenty of local and surrounding cafes to escape to and have a relaxing coffee and a sneaky treat for your-self! Or run yourself a hot bath, add some bubbles and spend an hour in silent bliss! It is very important to spend that much needed time with your children in the holi-days. When they are adults they reminisce on their childhood and all the family holidays and activities are cemented in their mind. Therefore it is important to help build mem-orable recollections with them. However, it is also very very important to take time out

for yourself. Most parents forget to take time out for themselves between working, organ-ising lunches, cleaning and paying bills! Even if it is just once a week, set aside an hour or two for you.

Gary MurphyGary Murphy has lived in Canowindra for 4 years and is an Ambulance Officer (Paramed-ic) for the Canowindra Station. He moved here due to a promotion from the Grenfell station, where he was working as a Second-ment Officer. When asked what he loves most about working as a Paramedic he said “Helping people when they need it most”. He starts his day by starting work at 7am, and is on call most of the time which makes it a 24 hour a day job. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family. When asked what his favour-ite football team was he said, “Well I’m a Kiwi so I go for the All Blacks”. His favourite meal is ‘fush n chups’. His favourite season is win-ter because the football is on and he enjoys having a flat white at Tommy’ on most morn-ings when it’s quiet. RECIPE OF THE WEEKCaramelised banana with toffee sauce60g butter 4 bananas, peeled, halved lengthways 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons thickened cream

1. Melt butter in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add banana. Cook, turning occasionally, for 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer to a plate. Cover with foil.

2. Add sugar to pan. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until sugar has dis-solved. Add cream. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until combined. Place bananas on serving plates. Top with one tablespoon sauce. Serve with remaining sauce.

Jo Marias Stuns With Her Talent On Wednesday the 18th June, the CWA held a fundraiser in conjunction with the very talented Jo Marias. The fundraiser included a celebration of flowers and bush sculpture demonstration and lunch. Around 21 people from Bathurst, Orange, Forbes and Canowin-dra attended the event and all agreed that Jo Marias is one very talented lady. “Her art work was absolutely amazing. She incorporated unusual material and found objects such as bark, wood, tin and flowers into her contemporary designs that made a memorable statement”, Bev Taylor said.Jo also catered the event serving up a beauti-

ful lunch for all the attendees including cous cous and salads. Jo chose to host a fundraiser for the CWA as a community gesture, and everyone was extremely grateful for her willingness to dem-onstrate her flower designs. They were also appreciative of her generosity of giving away her custom made flower arrangements that consisted of various seasonal flowers includ-ing orchids. On behalf of the CWA, Thank you to those who attended and volunteered their time to help, and a huge Thanks to Jo Marias.

The National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP) was started in Cowra in November last year and at present are offering one day a week, Wednesday. Kathryn Nicholas ex-plains what the program is designed to do “During the day we look after the person who needs assistance, who can’t manage alone because they have had a stroke, or are frail, or perhaps have dementia. We look af-ter them so their primary carer (maybe their husband or wife, or child) can go shopping or visit another town or attend appointment.” The aim, of the program is the to “help peo-ple stay at home with their loved ones, that’s the best part of the job” says Kath “The people who come to our group feel secure and enjoy themselves, they participate in ac-tivities like playing cards, listening to music, knitting and just general socialising. Free Admission - The Age of Fishes Muse-um’s new manager Warren Beedle is running a special family offer at the world-famous fossil exhibition during the school holidays starting Monday. Throughout the break, each child under 16 will be given free entry to the museum for each paying adult in a group as part of Warren’s drive to boost local knowl-edge of the museum and its attractions. The discount ends Sunday July 13. He’s already made key changes in the museum shop to prepare for a surge of new interest, bringing in new fossils from the UK, USA, Madagas-car, Morocco and Brazil. And he plans to pro-mote the exhibition to kids twice a year with free holiday admission in the winter and pos-sible “Night at the Museum” events during the summer school break.

Youth LeagueCanowindra vs. EugowraCanowindra Under 19’s players were off to a slow start as the Eugowra Eagles infiltrated the Tigers mistakes to give Eugowra a win of 26 - 16. It was the first half of the game that let the Tigers down and went into half time with a score of 14 - 0. In the second half the Tigers busted onto the field giving all they had to score as many tries as they could. The determination of Jordi Brown is just what the team needed as he scored the first try for Canowindra at the beginning of the second half. Alex Willson and Dan Friend were also able to score tries in the second half. This week’s Players’ Player is a double effort to Alex Willson and Jake Wythes. These two players have given their all in every game they have played this season. Jake has the agility to dodge and weave through players to push the team forward and Alex has the power to knock his way through any defence line, often still running with four or five boys trying to bring him down! An unfortunate loss. Great work Youth League players!

First GradeCanowindra vs. Trundle, Sunday 22nd JuneThe Tigers achieved a fantastic home win over the Trundle Boomers 16 - 8. Canowindra now sits fourth on the ladder. Trundle scored the first try of the game. Luke Tarrant came straight back onto the field after playing the Youth League game roaring to score the first try for first grade. Nick Willson scored a great try, leaving the score 10 – 8 Canow-indra’s way at half time. The score remained the same for nearly the whole second half and the intensity grew stronger as the game went on. In the last five minutes of the game Matt Mclean made a break, busting through the Boomers as he passed the ball to Stuart

Scott to score the final try for the Tigers. A fantastic victory for the Tigers with a very proud Coach, as all team members are hop-ing to remain in a winning position to reach the finals. Rugby UnionCanowindra vs. Molong, Saturday 21st JuneThe start was not the best for the Pythons as they let Molong score in the first few pas-sages of play. Tom Roth and Dan Middleton combined well in the 5/8 centre roles and Dan was able to find some nice holes in the defence for Rothy to run into. The Molong team seemed to want to take the python pack on in the first half but were quick to find out that the likes of the Schafer boys and Jack Knight and co were not going to make it easy for them.

The second stanza Molong found them-selves defending their own line more often than not. Though they were up to the chal-lenge and only let one try in with Toddy Wy-burn scoring after a quick tap. McClintocks best and fairest points were hard to choose, although Tommy Roth had one of his better games and got 3 points. Luke Watt got 2 points and 1 point each went to Sean Wy-burn and Jacob Baker. Player’s player went to Sean also. This week the pythons play host to Grenfell and are confident of turning the season around. Game kicks off at 315pm.
