In addition to operating the Shubert Theater, CAPA is owner/operator of downtown Columbus, Ohiosmagnicent Ohio, Palace and Southern Theatres, and manager of the contemporary Riff e Center TheatreComplex and Lincoln Theatre. Looking back on the 2012-2013 season, we are proud of the quality anddiversity of the shows our patrons continue to enjoy at the legendaryShubert Theater. Part of CAPAs mission is to present programming of thehighest quality to serve and educate diverse audienceswe hope youllagree that the variety of theatrical, musical, educational and communityoutreach programs helped us meet that goal.

And Oh What a Season it was!The two-week engagement ofJersey Boysdrew record crowds not only to the Shubert, but to downtown New Haven.This hit show helped us attract new audience members to the theateresulting in positive ticket sales throughout the season. The performances

of the mega-hit Les Misrables continued that trend. The story and themesof the show were the catalyst for the launch of our new education initi ative,Art in Action. Through this new program, a number of high school studentswere engaged to create a statement about a cause important to them and demonstrate their message positivelyhrough art. The results were outstanding and the students art was displayed on a billboard on I-95!

CAPA continued to strengthen its association with other arts and non-prot organizations as well as our localgoverning Board of Alders. We were delighted to see so many young people from the New Haven Ballet, SacredHeart Academy and a number of our local dance studios have the opportunity to perform on the Shubert stage.The dedicated members of New Havens Board of Alders volunteered as ushers, ran a food drive to benet NewHaven residents, and premiered their rst Broadway Night at the Shuberta special performance that showcasedheir talents and raised funds for their new scholarship program, Talent Haven.

We are delighted to share our progress with you in our annual report and hope you enjoy reading about theexciting and rewarding work which went into making the 20122013 season such a success. exg ecoomc imcCAPA has built on the Shuberts proud history as apremiere Broadway-presenting theater by workingwith producers to utilize the theater as a venue tobuild sets, coordinate the technical aspects of theproduction and rehearse the cast of new touringproductions. In recent years the Shubert Theaterwas used for the build of the national tours ofJersey Boys, The 39 Steps, A Chorus Line, HAIR, TheColor Purple, and most recently, The Addams Family.

Julius CaesarCAPA began a new partnership with the RoyalShakespeare Company on their new production ofJuliusCaesar, one of Shakespeares greatest political thrillers.Directed by Gregory Doran, the RSCs newly appointedArtistic Director, this groundbreaking production was setagainst the dark, contemporary echoes of modern Africaand included a company of some of the best black actorsworking in the UK today. Prior to its U.S. Tour, the showwas performed at a number of venues throughout the UKincluding the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Theatre Royal,Noel Coward Theatre, as well as the Moscow Art Theatrein Russia.

Under the general management of CAPA,Julius Caesarlaunched its U.S. tour in April, 2013. CAPA managed allaspects of the productions operation including venuebooking, contract negotiations, nancial settlements,production transportation, artist accommodations, stage

and company management, marketing and press.The touring production received stellar reviews:

n 2010 CAPA was engaged by New HavensBoard of Education to manage the newly openedCooperative Arts and Humanities High School,providing management and technical servicesfor the arts programs and related theaters andsupport spaces, along with internship programsn arts management and technical theater.

hubr ummr thr& ars Cm rs byh dv a. ckrmfouoNow in its second year, the Shubert SummerTheater and Arts Camp is formatted for middleschool children entering grades 6, 7 or 8. The four-week camp offers two programs to choose from:

The thr ars Cm offers in-depth classesin dance, music, theater, visual arts and creativewriting. Each participant selects three classes

based on their individual interests and strengths.Offerings include Ceramics & Sculpture, Hip-HopDance, Glee Club, Flip Books and more.

The Muscl thr Cm focuses on acting,dancing and singing. Participants receiveinstruction to prepare them to perform in a fullstage production. Each of the participants is cast ina role and has the opportunity to perform on Co-OpHigh Schools Main Stage at the end of the camp.

The camp is staffed by Co-Op arts teachers,professional artists, and emerging student-teacher-artists from Co-Op High School. Amajor benet of the camp is job training and jobopportunities for Co-Op studentsthe campemployed students as teaching assistants withadditional students working in the TechnicalTheater Training program. The students learn allaspects of theater production including lighting,sound and other related backstage operations.

Upon completion of this training, the studentswill staff production positions during events atCo-Ops theater facilities.

euco Commuy OurchSince its inception in 1997, the Shubert Theaters Educationand Community Outreach programs have served youngchildren, teenagers and seniors throughout the NewHaven Region. The Shubert strives to remove obstacles ofage, poverty and isolation, by providing a variety of accessinitiatives to those who might otherwise be unable toattend performances at the Shubert.

Capas Commuy Cocos ckg rogrmsprovide the most direct service to New Havens inner-cityneighborhoods. Partnering with over 100 New Haven-

based organizations, the Shuberts community outreachprograms distributed over 1,500 Shubert event tickets tofamilies, teenagers and senior citizens. The cost for alldistributed community tickets is underwritten by corpora-tions, individuals, the Cy o n v and o Coccu.

Capa i-chool progrmsCAPAs most extensive arts education program is aresidency program called MOVin, which has run for 16consecutive years. Over an eight-week period, this programreaches more than 850 young people in 1520 schools inthe New Haven area. The program utilizes non-traditionaldance techniques to teach MOVIN students importantlife skills including communication and cooperation,while building self condence, discipline and focus.Through teamwork and group problem solving exercises,participants explore alternative non-verbal methodsof self-expression. The program concludes with a nalpresentation of the skills they learned before an audienceof classmates, schoolmates, parents and teachers.

Participating schools in 2012-13 included Truman School,Wexler-Grant School, Betsy Ross Magnet School and more.

ar i acoLaunched in 2013, ar aco gives participating studentsthe ability to go beyond a theatrical work to critically thinkabout the themes of the production and apply them tothe community in which they live. The benets of artseducation include enhancing a students ability to becreative, develop independent ideas and build problem-solving skills as part of a team. This year the presentationofLes Misrables was chosenthe themes of the show gavestudents the opportunity to create a statement about acause and to demonstrate their message positively throughart. The art work created by the students was displayed atthe Shubert during the run ofLes Misrables and featuredon a billboard on I-95 North.

Each year CAPA produces the Music on the Greensummer concert series for the City of New Haven.

CAPA is a nonprot organization exempt from income taxunder Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

CAPAs net operating gain for Fiscal 2013 was$44,000. Ticket sales more than doubled fromFiscal 2012, primarily a result of 16 performancesofJersey Boys and 8 performances ofLes Misrablesin the 20122013 season.

Earned revenue represented 84% of total operatingrevenues in Fiscal 2013. Contributed revenue fromdonations, grants, and special events comprisedthe remaining 16% of operating revenues.

Mission related programs and services accountedfor 87% of operating expenditures in Fiscal2013. Mission programs include production andpresentation of live theater performances, andtheater education activities.

CAPAs net assets were $4.6 million at the endof Fiscal 2013. Current assets exceeded currentliabilities by $1.6 million.
