Helping all young people to be
great today and reach their full
potential as productive, caring,
responsible citizens tomorrow.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SOUHEGAN VALLEY | MILFORD, NH
MARCH 2017CAPITAL CAMPAIGN REPORT
Dear Supporter,
As Chair of the Building for the Future Capital Campaign, I had the privilege of working with an incredible group of volunteers who committed to raising more than $3,000,000 to support the expansion of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. Our success was truly a community effort, motivated by the need to serve more young people and have even more impact on their lives.
Whether you supported this campaign with a donation, your time, or both – you have become a part of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley family during one of the most exciting times in the Club’s history. Your dedication to this organization has created many opportunities. Opportunities to attract and retain teenagers and help them develop into responsible citizens. Opportunities for more children to learn leadership skills, teamwork, and increase their physical activity. Opportunities for the Club’s staff to mentor and guide more young people and positively influence their lives.
Together, our impact is felt far beyond simple dollars and cents, all the way to a generation of youth being inspired to lead, motivated to be healthy, and encouraged to achieve academic success.
I have been honored to lead a campaign that sought investors for the future of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. Thank you for the role you have played in enriching the lives of so many young people.
John Morison III, Chairman & CEO Hitchiner Manufacturing Building for the Future Capital Campaign Chair
“The gym has already had a major impact on our members and programs. It is great to see the values of the Club now being implemented in all our new sports programs. The feedback on the new Teen Center has been great. Seeing past members come back to us as high school teens has been incredibly rewarding; we are excited about the opportunities this space provides to serve more teens in new and exciting ways.”
– Cory Sullivan, Operations Director
“It has been a pleasure to be a part of this brand new endeavor in the addition of the gym and teen center at the Boys and Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. As a strong supporter of quality youth recreational opportunities I am so honored to be back in the community to bring fitness and FUN to our kids. I hope Milford and the Souhegan Valley are ready for lots of sports, recreation and community events in the very near future.”
– Rachel Robichaud, Athletic Director
Dear Friend,
It is with sincere gratitude that we celebrate the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley’s successful completion of its Building for the Future Capital Campaign. Together we raised more than $3 million in gifts and pledges in support of the expansion of our facility to include a new gym and teen center, renovations of our performing arts and academic spaces, and growth of our programs. Because of your generous commitment to children, we’re able to commemorate the success of this campaign and the lasting benefits it brings to our community!
The catalyst for the Club’s expansion was a series of “youth issues forums” held in 2011 to evaluate the social issues young people are facing which may lead to negative risky behaviors such as increased drug and alcohol use. We learned that young people are experiencing a lack of adult guidance and positive role models. Children are increasingly stressed by family situations such as poverty, divorce, or mental health issues. A lack of supervision may cause risky behaviors including drug and alcohol misuse. Many youth lack self-esteem. Youth today are exposed to a prevalence of pressure by electronic and social media to grow up quickly and take more risks. The need to serve more young people, especially those who need us most, was evident and motivated action by the Board of Directors and staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley.
Keeping existing members from leaving as they “age out” of current programming is critical to our mission. National studies have shown that the longer a child attend Boys & Girls Club programs, the more impact we have on their lives. Consistent participation helps teens navigate away from drug/alcohol misuse and other risky behaviors while providing opportunity to develop good character and citizenship, healthy lifestyles, and support their academic success.
The challenge, then, was how to attract a larger percentage of school age youth who otherwise face an empty house and unstructured time as parents work, and also keep older members engaged so they will not stop coming at a crucial development phase of life, as they leave middle school. Building a gym and new teen center, providing recreational sport leagues, and expanded programming designed with specific needs of youth aged 14-18 in mind, became an important step towards achieving this goal.
Fundraising potential for a capital campaign was assessed during the summer of 2014 by professional capital campaign consultants Carolyn Benthien and Kathy Barger, who concluded the study with a strong recommendation for moving forward. We began our campaign’s “quiet phase” in January 2015 and completed our campaign in December 2016. It’s been a long, hard process, but in the end incredibly rewarding as we engaged our supporters in our mission and the opportunity to serve more young people.
Our success could not have been possible without the tremendous dedication of our staff, board of directors, capital campaign committee members, building committee members, and all of our supporters. It’s because of you that we are poised to grow our membership and the impact we have on the lives of our youth members.
Thank you for helping us reach this tremendous milestone in the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley’s history. You have shown our youth members with your support and belief in our mission that anything is possible.
With gratitude,
Susan E. Taylor, Executive Director

BUILDING FOR THE FUTUREFor 25 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley (the Club) has been in the forefront of youth development in our community with a particular focus on providing opportunities for young people from disadvantaged economic, social, and family circumstances. Our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to be great today and reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens tomorrow.
Today our roots remain as strongly embedded in the community as the day we were officially chartered. In 2005 we built our current facility around Playhouse 101, home of former American Stage Festival. As a result, over the past decade we have reached thousands of youth through our afterschool and summer camp programs and the theater arts, providing opportunities for young people to develop character and leadership skills, support their academic success, and encourage healthy lifestyles.
However, the community needed us to do more. Research conducted in late 2011 indicated that changing family dynamics, increased stressors on children, increase drug and alcohol misuse by teens, and an increase in behavioral issues were causing many children and teens to be at risk. The need to serve more young people, especially those who need us most, was clear and motivated action by the Board of Directors and staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley.
The Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley committed to expanding our facility to include a gymnasium and new teen center in order to implement sports programming to recruit more members of all ages, retain more of our middle school members into high school, and attract additional teens into our programs.
EXPANSION GOALSTo increase youth membership, increase teen members aged 12 and older, and increase services to children living in low-to-moderate income families.
WITHIN 3 YEARS OF EXPANSION:• Increase membership by 30% or 255 additional members.
• Increase in the percentage of older teens age 13-18 served from 35% of total members to 40% of total members.
• Increase low to moderate income families served from 43% to 50% of total members.
• Increase average daily attendance from 170 youth members a day to 225+ a day.
