General rules for capitalization:

Propernouns

| Apropernounidentifiesaspecificperson,place,orthing.Wordsderivedfrompropernounsarealsocapitalized.Alsocapitalizetitlesofpersonswhenusedaspartofapropernamebutusuallynotwhenusedalone.

| Examples:Japan,Japanesefood,theDemocraticParty,John,DistrictAttorneyJones

Firstwordofasentenceorquotedsentence

| Thefirstwordofasentenceshouldbecapitalized.Also,capitalizethefirstwordofaquotedsentencebutnotaquotedphrase.Ifaquotedsentenceisinterrupted,donotcapitalizethefirstwordaftertheinterruption.

| Examples:Thejournalistwrote,“Thesituationseemsmoreominousasthevariouspartieshavefailedtoreachanagreement.”

“Sports”,saidRussellBaker“istheopiateofthemasses.”

| Majorwords(andthefirstword)intitlesandsubtitlesofworkssuchasbooks,articles,andsongsshouldbecapitalized.

Firstwordfollowingacolon

| Capitalizethefirstwordafteracolononlyifitbeginsanindependentclause(andthatisactuallyoptional).

Abbreviations

| Capitalizeabbreviationsforgovernmentdepartmentsandagencies,otherorganizations,corporations,tradenames,andcalllettersforradioandtelevisionstations.
