Edinburgh Napier University working in partnership with the creative industriesIn the School of Arts & Creative Industries, our BA (Hons) Communication, Advertising and PR course prepares students for diverse careers in the sector by providing up to date training in advertising and PR campaigns, event management, marketing, corporate communications and more.

Students studying on this programme are direct entrants from various further education institutions. They have all come from courses relevant and linked to Communication, Advertising and PR and possess up to date creative, organisational and communicative skills.

In their third year, our students have the option to complete a work placement to develop these skills and consolidate their learning by actively applying their skills in a work environment.

Work placements offer great benefits to both students and employers and provide the opportunity for knowledge exchange and positive collaboration.

Skills

Our BA (Hons) Communication, Advertising and PR students gain from their studies excellent verbal and written communication, team-work and organisational skills. They will also work on live client briefs.

In addition to this:

• Ability to meet deadlines/work to real-time schedules• Public relations campaigns including event management, stakeholder communication, awareness & promotional campaigns• Media relations• Brand & reputation management & CSR.• Advertising campaigns including project management, media strategy, and creative & strategic campaign solutions.• Corporate & Brand communication.• Internal Communication and Employee Engagement.• Marketing

Areas of Employment

The broad range of creative and interpretive skills our students possess allow for work placements across the creative industries, third sector and business world.

Academic Support

Students receive academic support throughout the module specifically tailored to enabling them to be work ready. They will receive guidance on preparing a CV, presentation skills and applying for appropriate work placement opportunities. They will be supported in developing professional attitudes and working practices.

Employers/ mentors can contact academic staff at any time. Their opinions are taken into account in creating a learning contract. At the end of the module feedback is sought from employers about the student’s performance.

Recruitment

The placement team in the School of Arts & Creative Industries will be happy to discuss and support all aspects of recruiting a work placement student or advertising project work. We can liaise over job descriptions, advertise opportunities, collate CV’s, applications and portfolios as well as assist in arranging interviews, circulating feedback etc.

We can also provide guidance on placement agreements and health and safety.

Timings

Accredited Work Based Learning (Module: JAC09114)

Our year 3 BA (Hons) Communication, Advertising and PR students can complete their work placement at any time throughout the year, part-time during term time from September to May and potentially full-time over the summer. The hours and days worked can be flexibly arranged to suit both the candidates and business needs.
