Captain’s Scribbles John Conlan
Christmas is coming and the geese are
getting fat, please put a penny in the old
man’s hat. If you haven’t got a penny a
ha’penny will do, if you haven’t got a
ha’penny well God bless you.
So runs the old nursery rhyme of
uncertain origin although the meaning
seems clear promoting generosity to the
elderly at Christmastime. Christmas is a
time when many of us in GINS will
indeed reflect on how lucky we are
compared to many others. And boy, are
we lucky!
We have had a great November with
lovely weather and some great golf
competitions. We started the month
with a social event, the quiz night at El
Puente at which over 60 people
attended. We then had the Anniversary
competition at Las Gabias which was a
truly wonderful event. Before we could
draw breath we then had the El Puente
Masters competition at our three
courses at which over 100 players
competed. Prize giving was a week later
at a great night at which 75 people
attended the dinner and Antonio of El
Puente presented the 18 prizes he had
donated ( see report on page 4)
In the meantime, a new event for us was
the Competition at Baviera sponsored
by the Golf Federation of Spain ( RFEG)
who provided some wonderful prizes
and was well attended by over 60
players. I think this event may herald a
new and mutually fruitful relationship
between GINS and the Federation.
As if all that was not enough; we
finished the month with the ladies
invitation at Anoreta which had a huge
turnout and was a most enjoyable day
with many Giners more usually
associated with Baviera and Los
Moriscos putting forward teams in the
true tradition of a golf society.
And we are not even in December yet
with the 3 turkey trots to look forward
to.
Who would not want to belong to a
society like GINS with all this activity,
and all for the modest subscription of 55
euros per annum?
Oh yes; that reminds me. It’s renewal
time, so please get your subs paid as
soon as possible ( details on page ??).
I hope you all have a peaceful and
joyous Christmas with those you love.
Stop Press.: Since drafting this I was saddened to hear of the death of longstanding GINS member Brian Parker. Brian was a lovely man and will be sadly missed. Rita McCracken's tribute to Brian appears on page 6.

El Puente Masters
El Puente Masters week in November, sponsored by Antonio and his family at the GINS “ clubhouse” –
Restaurante El Puente – was a great success as always.
Records numbers played in great conditions at all three courses and some great golf was played by
both men and ladies.
Record numbers also booked in for the presentation dinner at El Puente on Saturday 25th such that
dinner organiser Bridget Lloyd-Edwards had to turn people away. This reflects the esteem that Antonio
and his family and staff are held in by our members.
75 members enjoyed and excellent meal and an
abundance of wine flowed, as these photos show and
other members joined the diners for the prize giving.
Antonio presented the 18 prize-winners with a truly tremendous
array of beautiful prizes.
The evening was hosted by Captain John Conlan and wife Liz, who
came from the UK specifically for this dinner because of the
importance that the Captain attaches to this event and our
wonderful sponsors, Restaurante El Puente.

Brian Parker It is with sadness that we have to announce that Brian, at the age of 81, lost his brave fight against cancer. Brian had been a member of the GINS Society for about 30 years. His favourite course was Las Gabias, Granada. He loved the trips up there and the great après golf at the Fruta y Sol. He and his wife Pam spent many happy years in their apartment in Nerja, meeting up on a Saturday lunchtime at El Puente, chatting to friends over a beer or two. Brian enjoyed his life to the full and will be sadly missed by his friends not only in the GINS but his many pals in Nerja. The funeral will take place on Wednesday 20th December at 12.30 at Randalls Park Crematorium, Leatherhead, Surrey.

GINS Charity Donation
The Golf International Nerja Society (GINS) is happy to contribute to the Almunecar/La Herradura campaign "Ningún niño sin juguete." This year the GINS members/players who play at Los Moriscos raised €360 for this very worthwhile children's charity. More than 200 children will receive toys on the night of "Los Reyes" due to the generosity of the many local businesses and private donations in the Almunecar/La Herradura area.
Dot Burton and Sally Cooknell receiving
the GINS donation of €360 from Rita
McCracken (GINS)
Almuñécar and La Herradura, “no child without toys" is a campaign that has been going on for more than
two decades. This initiative, which for the third consecutive year is channelled through Cáritas, with the
participation of the commerce/business sector, for those who need it the most, "as acknowledged by the
parish priest, Vicente Guerrero”.
"Thanks to the solidarity of all, we were able to serve 206 children, to whom we gave gift vouchers of an
average of 30 euros. These could be exchanged at local businesses and provide practical support to
individual families.

Message from the Handicap Secretary: At this time of year when the snowbirds complete their journey south after a long, hot and dry () summer of golfing in the north we would draw your attention to the GINS Handicapping Policy as presented on the GINS website, specifically the section entitled ‘Handicap Review’(http://www.ginsgolf.com/gins/latest-handicaps/).
If we find that GINS members are not playing to their lowest handicap; either a GINS allocated handicap or one held at a Federated club then we will adjust their handicap accordingly. As per the policy, please contact the Handicap Secretary ([email protected]) if your current GINS handicap is not your lowest handicap.

Committee Notes Saturday 25th November 2017, 10.30am at El Puente Captain John welcomed everybody to the meeting and again welcomed guest Keith Platt. Apologies received from Peter Lomas, Past Captain; Erica Oxford, Vice-Captain; Robert Durston, Publicity officer, Ian Paterson, Baviera Rep; Ray Craig, Other Venue Rep. Minutes of the 28th October meeting were approved- proposed Rita McCracken & seconded Derek Sibson All matters arising appear on the agenda 1. Captains report: a) The away trip 48 people have paid deposits, Deposit will be paid to YGT by 28th November 2017. Captain will visit Alboran early January: b) Captain’s days: A budget of €200 per course had been agreed with the Treasurer for on course refreshments etc. plus €5 per person prize money c) Quiz Night at El Puente was a success with 60people attending, Captain thanked Antonio and staff for looking after us so well 2. Vice-Captain: a) Erica’s report on Marshalling at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation. Keith confirmed he had received photos and would liase with Erica for her report for the Newsletter. b) 2018-19 Vice-Captain. Captain reported on behalf of Erica that she had approached Terry Everett to be her Vice -Captain next year and the committee full endorsed her recommendation. A proposal would be put to the AGM in March with Erica proposing and Rita seconding the appointment. c) Gins Practices. Captain again raised this on behalf of Erica with particular reference to “guests” playing with the GINS. Rob confirmed that although the rule on guests was not written in stone it was his practice as Membership Sec to encourage guests to play before or during the joining process and not give guest invitations for “Mates” or Family and friends.” d) Member referring to the use of illegal golf clubs in the GINS. Action It was agreed that the necessary information would be supplied by Derek S and Stewart G after approval by the committee for Keith to publish an article for the December Newsletter clearly stating that Gins will not allow the use of illegal golf clubs as from the 1st January 2018. He will add a link to the R&A website on the subject. 3. Treasurer’s Report: Gill had previously circulated the Treasurers report and predicted that we would be overspent by approx. €800 for the year against a budget overspend of €1500. Budget for 2018 would be prepared for discussion before the end of the year 2017 Christmas card appeal. Gill asked for the sake of good accounting practice that all the donations raised be given to her and that she would then issue a cheque to the Reps for the chosen Charities. Treasurer Gill gave out Diary advert invoices to C Members to be delivered with diaries and money collected. 4. Handicap Secretary: Nothing to report 5. Membership Secretary 287 Members as of today’s date 36 new (up 11 on budget) and 251 renewals (down 24 on budget) 6. Publicity: Keith raised a problem with his email list and asked if there was a master the membership list available. Derek S agreed that he would go through the workings with Keith and they would discuss the problem. 7. Sponsorship & Federation: a) Baviera Federation day 21sth November was a great success with 63 members playing and great prizes provided by the Federation and Anoreta, Baviera and Los Moriscos courses, with a meal afterwards. It was agreed that a letter of thanks be sent to Federation representative, Snr. Francisco Cervilla, suggesting that they might like to sponsor a GINS game at Los Moriscos next year. Rob reported that he had 7 new signups for membership of the Federation and 3 Gins members who would transfer over to AM39. b) El Puente masters competitions had been well attended and Captain thanked Bridget L-E for organising the meal and Antonio and Family for their generous sponsorship. 8. Anoreta Rep: SG reported numbers increasing to early 30’s and that he had a meeting with Cheeky & Tatiana and relations continue to improve. He had pointed out to Tatiana that Gins provided 999 games last year, a figure much higher than Anoreta’s and it appears that Anoreta do not count Gins Anoreta Members as paying for Gins games! 9. Baviera Rep: Report supplied in Ian’s absence. November had been a busy month. Two major events (the El Puente Masters and the FGA sponsored game) one after the other. The El Puente game attracted a good field of 46 players. The deferral of the FGA game was vindicated by the turnout of 63 players. Many thanks to the other course reps and the newsletters for promoting it so well. The FGA representative Francisco Cervilla gave out the prizes after a short introduction of the FGA´s activities. Over the meal he outlined the FGA seniors circuit event in a way that appealed to a number of us and as a result I think we may get 4 or 5 sign ups. The restaurant at Baviera came up trumps for once with an excellent meal. Mark will take over from me for the months of December and January and I will be back in early February.

Committee Notes continued
10. Los Mos Rep; Another good month for Los Moriscos. Numbers steadily increasing. A good range of mixed games being played, medal, stablefords and a team game. Many congratulations to Jim Henderson the overall winner at Los Mos for returning an excellent score of 43 pts in the El Puente Masters. A special thank you to everyone at Los Mos for contributing to the No Christmas Card Appeal and for donating the €50 – too many players winning the 2’s pot so everyone agreed it could be donated to the local charity11. Other venue rep Nothing to report AOB: Past Captain Derek Geelon’s letter re El Puente Masters Captain opened thanking Derek for his email and a general discussion followed. It was resolved that the subject would be carried forward into the new year and raised in good time for next year’s event, meanwhile secretary Rob would respond appropriately to Derek’s email. Forward Programme: Dates were added for Turkey trots Captain to contact Liberty Seguros and confirm sponsorship for early 2018 Captain’s & Vice Captain’s away dates: Captain: Away 29th Nov – 19th December Vice-Captain: Away 23rd of November 2017- 3rd of January 2018 Rita reported that the defibrillator would be installed at Los Moriscos in January 2018. Treasurer raised the annual renewal of the GINS insurance with Mapfre and the renewal was agreed. Progress of replacing those standing down end of current year. Treasurer. Confirmed we are still looking for a suitable replacement and this was now a priority. Other Courses position. Ray confirmed that he would not stand in 2018. No meeting in December Date of next meeting 27th January 2018 at El Puente Meeting concluded at 12.40pm

temperature to rise. By 10.30, when the rocket banger went up to signal the
shotgun start, shorts were the preferred attire for most.
We had a great turnout, with 45 players and 34 whom partook of the delicious
meal afterwards.
The club’s staff looked after us well, however the course was extremely busy,
which made it a 5+ hour round; but hey-ho, we all still had a wonderful day’s golf.
As usual, the cream rose to the top, with Tim Davis (8 Hcp, 39 points) winning by
3 shots from Steve McFarlane and Gill Green taking the lady’s honour.
Thank you to everyone who came, and especially to Derek Geelon, who skilfully
manned the check-in desk and relieved everyone of their hard earned dinero, and
Captain John who officiated at the prize giving.

GINS RULES CORNER
Driver Legality
At a recent committee meeting, members raised the issue of the use of illegal golf clubs in GINS competitions. It was agreed that GINS would officially not allow the use of illegal clubs as from 1st January 2018. The handicap secretary and the Anoreta Rep have provided a link to the R&A website on the subject. If you have an old driver, or you have bought a driver second hand, it would be best to check the list as the penalty for using one is disqualification. The key issue is the trampoline effect:

Andalusian Masters, an experience and a farewell
Instead of supporting Captain John in his duties with our society, I
dashed to Sotogrande after our autumn travels having committed to
help at the Andalusian Masters sponsored by the Sergio Garcia
Foundation and staged at Valderrama Golf Club, from 18th to the 22nd
of October.
I volunteered for being a walking scorer and Sandra Slater, who
manages the volunteers, accepted my offer. Soon I realized that the
Brits, who also organise the events at Wentworth and the Masters in
Portugal, were running the working stage here. Apparently, the magic
number of volunteers needed to run such an event smoothly is around
300. Some registered, took the shirt and the entrance card for the
whole event and never turned up to work! With the assistance of Jim Paton, who regularly supports Wentworth
and other such tournaments, I got to know the group of volunteers and started helping on Day One. The PRO-AM
charity event saw us ball spotting and getting familiar with the
course. My eyesight is not the best and I wondered if I would see
more rabbits than balls. Upon receiving instructions from Jim such
as, where to wait and count the seconds until the ball drops, it all
became clearer. Our group had Bradley Dredge and on the second
nine Shane Lowry. It was exciting to see these players hitting their
shots so accurately and so far, onto the narrow fairways and small
greens – a quite different perspective to what we see on TV.
On Thursday, we met at 7:15am in front of the hotel and Jim gave three other volunteers and my self a lift to the
parking area close to the seventeenth fairway where our tent was. Bob in our group had a special parking licence
and we preferred to get there early and take advantage arriving with him every day. Apparently, the parking for the
public was sometimes a problem, especially after the Valderrama Club had sold the original parking areas to Real
Estate companies. Normal streets had to serve as parking slots and buses picked up the public. It happened that
you had to wait for quite some time till a bus stopped, as all seats were already taken. However, my aim and wish
was to be a walking scorer and as I was there so early, I was out with the first match. The players were Daniel
Brooks, Ashun Wu and Magnus A. Carlsson. I soon realised that fitness is not enough for such a job; you need to be
quick to be able to follow these long legged youngsters. They had a good round until the Swede needed five putts
on the par three fifteenth! I had never seen anybody needing that many putts. This hole disturbed him and from
then on, he had a disastrous experience. It was different with young Daniel, who birdied the seventeenth and was
by then only two shots behind the leaders. However, the 18th hole brought him down to earth with a horrible
double-bogie.
On Friday, I had the pleasure to have David Howell in my group. A chatty and friendly chap who did not only talked
to me whenever he could, but also to the public, making jokes and playing badly. I kept my fingers crossed and was
cheering for him quietly all along the 18 holes, with no effect. He ended up with a score of +6 for the day and
consequently did not make the cut.
On Saturday, I recorded the scores of two Germans and one of them, ended up in last position. It seems that I did
not give them much luck. Nevertheless, young Daniel Brooks played that day so well that he was out in the last
match on Sunday. The young lad along the experienced Joost Luiten and Sergio Garcia, pushed them bravely, and
ended up third.
We were three volunteers from our society, as Jill Parker was also an active helper and I can say it was a great
experience; I enjoyed it tremendously and thank you Jim for all your advice and support. I wish you well back in the
UK and hope to be meeting you again in another such event, next year! Erica

GINS Members benefit from hard training
Anyone who thinks that GINS members just turn up at Anoreta, Baviera or
Los Moriscos ill prepared and untrained will have the scales lifted from their
eyes when they examine the photographs below.
What you see here is the training that one group of finely tuned athletes,
from amongst our members, put in every week in Nerja, They are the
members of the GINS Yoga class.
Every Wednesday morning come sun or sun this intrepid group are put
through their paces under the strict regime of lithesome Yoga guru Kiki
Trenew. Ms Trenew expects the highest standards and absolute commitment and no slacking is
permitted. Kiki Trenew can spot a slacker quicker than Malcolm Richie can light a fag.
It comes as no surprise that these GINS members feature so often in the prizes at our venues.
Pictured along with coach Kiki are, Malcolm Richie, Derek Lowe, Clive Akid, Brian Howard, Mike
Callaway as well as Mike Elsey and Captain John Conlan.
Others would do well to emulate these fine athletes.
See you at the Gym! John Conlan
