ABOUT JOY Have you ever felt a rush of happiness and

contentment? Like everything is right in the

world? That’s JOY. Joy is a bit different than

happiness, because happiness only lasts for

a fleeting moment,

while joy is

something that is

built up within a

person and

endures even

through problems

and hardship.

This lesson is jam-packed with

opportunities for students to reflect on

things that bring them joy, as well as

create a meditative piece of artwork to

represent themselves. There are three

different versions of the lesson included

so it can be used for kindergarten

through seventh grade.

What You’ll Need: All versions

Puck tempera paint

Liquid tempera paint & bubble wrap

Medium round & flat paintbrushes

Scissors & glue

K-2 additional supplies:

Oil pastels (optional)

Glitter

6” x 9” colored sulphite

3-4 additional supplies:

Chalk markers or paint pens

9” x 12” white sulphite paper

Colored markers

5-7 additional supplies:

Colored card stock & circle tracers

Cardboard squares

Yarn

Hole punch & paper fasteners

Colored, painted or glitter paper

Page 3: Capturing Joy K-7

First steps• Begin by completing the planning sheet on page

seven. This will help you plan your COLOR SCHEME. A color scheme is a planned use of color.

• Use a pencil to draw a large

“whoosh” shape. For K-2nd

students, use 12” x 18” white

sulphite paper. For 3-7th, use

18” x 24” white sulphite.

• From the top left side of the

paper, draw a long, gently

curving line that stops at the middle of the right

side. Draw another line from bottom left side to the

same point. The shape should taper to a point.

• Use cake tempera to paint inside the “whoosh”.

Use a flat paintbrush to save time. Use colors from

your planning worksheet.

• For added TEXTURE, paint the center of a small

square of bubble wrap with liquid tempera paint.

Press it gently on the paper, then repeat. This step is

optional for K-2.

• Use a palette of your chosen colors to paint

REPEATING circles on your “whoosh” with liquid

tempera paint. Repetition will help give your artwork

a sense of UNITY.

• To save time, use

one color and add

circles of multiple

sizes across the

paper, then repeat

with another color.

K-2: final steps• Start with a 6” x 9” colored piece of sulphite paper.

Fold it in half VERTICALLY.

• With a pencil, draw half of a heart.

• Cut while folded.

• Open up and use a

Sharpie to add your

name to the center of

the heart.

• Add repeating LINES and SHAPES to create a

PATTERN around the outer edge of the heart.

• Use markers or crayons to add some color to the heart.

• Glue the heart to the thin end of the “whoosh”.

• As an optional step, use oil pastels to add joyful lines

to your paper, radiating from and inside the circles.

• Use liquid glue to draw curved lines and circles

within your “whoosh” and heart. Wherever you put the

glue, that’s where glitter will stick.

• Sprinkle glitter over the top, then allow it to sift off

by lifting it up. Save the leftover glitter.

• TIP: For younger students, setting up a glitter station is a great (and less messy) idea. Allow them to

glue at their seats, then bring their papers over to you

and you can sprinkle the glitter and shake it off over a

container. If you don’t want students to travel, you can walk around with the container as a mobile glitter station.

3-7: adding details• For both the 3-4 and 5-7 versions, follow these

steps for the details and nets.

• Use chalk markers or paint pens

like Poscas to trace the circles, add

circles in the background, and add

patterns.

• Refer back to your planning

document for your color scheme.

• Inside several of the circles, include some short

1-2 word answers of what brings you joy.

• Make sure to use a CONTRASTING color so your

words stand out from the paint color below.

• Set aside and let dry.

• On a 9” x 12” piece of white sulphite, use a

Sharpie to draw the net.

• You can reference the drawing guide on page eight.

• Use markers to color in the net. The colors don’t

have to be realistic. Add your name to the handle.

• Cut out the net. Fold over the net portion gently

and hold it. Use scissors to cut a slice in the top

portion of the net.

• Open up the net

and slide the thin

part of your

“whoosh” into the

slice. Glue.

5-7: adding 3d elements• Layered COLLAGE and WEAVING make up the

THREE-DIMENSIONAL elements of the 5-7 version.

• For the collage, use circle tracers to cut a variety of

sizes of circles from colored, painted or glitter paper.

Arrange them from large to small in a stack.

• Glue a small square of cardboard between each

layer to pop it up a bit and make it more

dimensional. Glue a cardboard square beneath the

largest circle when you glue it to your “whoosh”.

• For the weaving, trace a circle tracer on colored

card stock. Sulphite paper is too thin for this step.

• Use a hole punch to make a hole in the center.

• Make five cuts in toward the center of the circle.

Your number of cuts need to be an odd number for

the LOOM to work correctly.

• Slide a piece of yarn between the slits and begin

weaving in an UNDER-OVER pattern. Continue

weaving around the circle until you fill it up.

• If you need another yarn piece, you can just

wedge a new piece in where you left off.

• Poke the paper fastener through the hole in the

circle. Use a long arm stapler to make a hole in the

“whoosh”. Or you can

make a hole with a

pencil.

• Add extra details

with chalk markers to

the 3D elements.

Today I will learn about COLOR so that

I CAN chose a COLOR SCHEME that I relate

with joy.

Today I will learn about SHAPE so that I CAN REPEAT circle

shapes to create a sense of UNITY in my artwork.
