Potential modified PTEThe next PowerPoint presentation indicates some
thoughts we are having about what a modified PTE might look like. The first slide indicates when we put together the first version
That first version was discussed at SEESHOP5 and it was agreed that DSD and the SAD version of Sociological Discrimination were good things, the rest of the rearrangement did not work so well
So this is here for discussion: email any comments to any of us or put them on the SEETALK list
(You’ll notice a gap between Interactional and Contributory which something called Perceptual Expertise once filled but it was generally agreed that it was a mistake to try to add it)
Potential modifications to PTE
PowerPoint presentation preparation begun around May 2010 and completed by August 2010 at latest.
It was discussed in KES on 4 June 2010
DSD
The first change is the addition of ‘Domain Specific Discrimination’ (DSD)
DSD is a transmuted meta-expertise but is used by those in the very heart of the technical community
It is the way core-set scientists judge others in order to break out of the experiment’s regress and was discovered by SSK (eg Changing Order) but not given a name until now.
Martin Weinel pointed to the fact that DSD should be a named category in the PTE
DSD is also the major component of Referred Expertise

Sociological DiscriminationThe second change is the addition Sociological Discrimination. It includes:
Martin Weinel’s rules for separated true from fake scientific controversies
Lee Smolin’s attempt to criticise string theory because of its sociological pathologies
Simon Cole’s use of general scientific principles – eg randomised control trials -- to criticise fingerprint identification (and all other such)
Collins/Boyce, et al’s criticism of MMR journalists
The label should almost certainly be changed to something more general so that this category could include the kind of thing that, for example, argumentation theorists invoke to make distinctions between expert positions. ‘Social Analytic Discrimination’ (SAD)? SAD is another transmuted meta-expertise, this time from one kind of esoteric expertise to another

Rearrangement of table
The next slides show the bottom part of the table being rearranged along with some explanations
The theme of the lower half of the table changes
from meta-expertise vs expertise
to transmuted vs non-transmuted
The labels in the black boxes on the left of the lines change to reflect this changed theme.
This, we believe, produces a more coherent result
