Public Protection Team Calendar of Training 2016/2017
The East and Midlothian Public Protection Team was established in March 2014
in the Brunton Hall, Musselburgh. It has brought together Lead Officers and staff from Adult Support and Protection, Child Protection and Violence Against
Women and Girls in recognition that for most service users their needs often cover more than one area.
East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee
The East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee (EMPPC) is the key
strategic group dealing with public protection matters across East and Midlothian and includes representatives from key partners (Social Work, Police
Scotland, NHS Lothian, Education, Housing, 3rd sector etc). The committee reports to senior officers through the East and Midlothian Critical Services
Oversight Group.
If you have any questions or would like further information in relation to the office or committee then please e-mail: [email protected].
For further information and useful links in relation to child protection or wider
public protection matters please visit www.emppc.org.uk.
Child Protection Level 1 & Level 2
If you come into contact with children and young people in your day to day employment you should attend a
face-to face Child Protection (CP) level 1 course. If you have attended the face-to-face course then you are
required to do the CP level 1 e-learning module every two years to refresh your knowledge, this online module has recently been
updated.
Dates for Level 1 Child Protection Training from August-December 2016 have
now been agreed and are listed below.
Date Time Venue
19/08/2016 1.00-4.00 Macmerry Village Hall
8
Bookings for Level 1 Child Protection should be made to the Children’s Wellbeing Team, e-mail [email protected]
When a school requires CP 1 training for several members of staff the minimum
number of participants in a course is 10. Where schools have a smaller number of staff it is suggested that schools within a cluster get together to make a
course viable with a minimum number of 10 staff. Once staff have been
indentified contact the Workforce Development Officer, Children’s Wellbeing to arrange training.
Child Protection level 2
Child Protection level 2 multi-agency training is suitable for staff who are involved in case conferences e.g. for Head Teachers, Depute Head Teachers,
Educational Psychologists, Guidance Teachers. We hold a waiting list of staff requiring this training. If you have not yet been trained please e-mail the
Training & Development Team to add your details to this list.
The 2016/2017 Public Protection Calendar of Training is available on the Public
Protection Team Website.

that this programme will become the “Middle Leader” (SCQF 11 - 60 credits)
element of the Headship qualification.
10
School Leadership – Into Headship (SCQF 11 – 60 credits) applications were open during May 2016. Participants for Cohort 2 were recruited in early June
and will begin the programme from August 2016 – 17. For further information
about Into Headship go to www.scelscotland.org.uk applications are normally open during May each year. Application forms are available from the SCEL
website and must be completed with a reference from your Head Teacher.

agreed with EIS, SSTA and Unison. This is now being implemented and the revised PRD form and further information is available on Edubuzz Please note
that you need to ensure your Senior Management Team have pre-populated the form with the key priorities from your School Improvement Plan (SIP).
Professional Update
If your year of registration with the GTC ends in a “0” or a “5” you will be required to have your professional learning “signed-off” by your reviewer at
your PRD meeting. Information relating to Professional Update is available on Edubuzz or go to www.gtcs.org
A Coaching Approach to Professional Conversations
3.2.2 “Middle leaders establish and use strategies to identify individual and team professional learning needs to support the school’s improvement agenda”
- 3.2.2.4 – “use coaching and mentoring skills to support the PRD process”
GTCS Standards for leadership and Management

Primary One Literacy Assessment and Action Resource (POLAAR )
http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/resources/p/polaar/introduction.asp
POLAAR is a resource that is designed to help P1 teachers identify and assess
children who are most at risk of developing later difficulties with reading and writing. It includes an Early Literacy Environment Assessment which can be
used by the teacher to assess the learning environment being provided for all children. In addition it provides observational assessment that can be used to
gather information when there are concerns about an individual child’s progress. POLAAR as it is based on a staged model of ‘observe-action-observe’ which
helps identify the most effective intervention to take at classroom and child levels.
This resource is for all P1 teachers and we would like to work with any schools
who have not used the materials and require support.
