Finance consist of 3 interrelated areas.
1) Money & Capital Markets,2) Investments,
3) Financial Management.
1) Money & Capital Markets:
Many finance majors go to work for financial institutions,
includings banks,
insurance companies, mutual funds & investment banking firm.
For success
here, one needs a knowledge of valuations techniques, the
factors that cause
interest rate to raise & fall the regulations to which
financial institutions aresubject,& the various types of
financial instruments (mortgage, auto loan,
certificate of deposit & so on).One also need a general
knowledge of all
aspects of business administrations, because the mgt. of a
financial
institutions involve accounting, mktg., personal & computer
system, as well
as financial mgt.. And ability to communicate both orally &
in writing is
important, &skill or the ability to get others to do their
jobs well
are critical.
2) Investments:
Finance graduate who go into investment often work for a
brokerage house
such as Merrill Lynch, either in sells of as a security analyst.
Others work
for bank, mutual fund or insurance companies in the mgt. of
their investment
portfolio; for financial consulting firms advising individual
investors; for
investment bank whose primary function is to help businesses
raise new
capital; or as financial planners whose job is to help
individual develop long-
term financial goal & portfolios.
The 3 main functions in the investment area are sales, analyzing
individual
securities,& determining the optional mix of securities for
a given investor.
3) Financial Management:
Financial Management is the broadest of the 3 areas & the
one with the most
job opportunities. Financial mgt. is important in all types of
businesses,

including bank & other financial institutions, as well as,
industrial & retail
firm.
Financial management is also important in governmental
operations, from
school to hospital to high way departments. The job
opportunities in
financial management ranks from making decision regarding
plan
expansions to choosing what types of securities to issue when
financing
expansions. Financial manager also have the responsibility for
deciding the
credit terms under which customer may buy, how much inventory
the firm
should carry, how much cash to keep on hand, whether to acquire
other
firms(manager analysis),&how much of the firm earning to
plan back into
the business versus pay out as dividence.
For exp., A bank landing officer cannot do his or her job well
without a good
understanding of financial management; because he or she must be
able to
judge how well a business is being operated.
