Welcome to the 2015 Dean Close Careers Fair

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain advice and information so that you are able to make more informed choices about your own future. We are joined by over 20 exhibitors, offering information on their own career progression and the careers available in their industry. Five presentations will take place and experts are available in the Careers Hub. We would like to extend particular thanks to our exhibitors; local businesses, Old Decanians and parents who have given up their time. This event would not be possible without their very generous participation. We hope you are inspired and find the event useful in helping you to make decisions about your future career options. The Careers Hub is an area where you can get general information and support on careers, discuss the entry requirements and experience required.

The Careers Hub

On stage in the main DCPS Hall, the Careers Hub is an area where you can get general information and support on careers. You will have access to computer based careers support, including a representative from the National Careers Service, an organisation that has some great online tools. There will also be career relevant literature. In addition, you will have the opportunity to chat to people who have a wealth of experience in careers and University options, in a relaxed and informal setting. A great opportunity to get extra information or have any questions answered. Our Experts:

Jill Brooks works as an independent Personal Development & Careers Coach, working with young people who need support with various aspects of career choices and skills, as well as academic life, personal belief and motivation. Through her extensive experience working within businesses in human resources, she is able to apply her insights to support young people through 1:1 coaching and workshops. These are designed to support individuals to find a clear direction and purpose and be confident and self-reliant. Her sessions and courses are always tailored to individual client needs (whether that be practical skills (e.g. CV creation, interviewing skills), softer skills (body language, communication) or emotional support). Her sessions aim to be both thought-provoking and fun. Jill is a qualified Life Coach and has worked with a number of organisations, as well as being a committed business mentor with The Prince’s Trust. She is passionate about motivating and engaging young people to achieve their full potential. Although the primary focus of the work is with young people, Jill also works with adults, parents and schools. She is co-founder of the Asperger’s Parent Support Group based in Cheltenham and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development. She will be running the ‘Chocolate Bar Challenge’ seminar at Dean Close Careers Fair 2015.

Vanessa Aris MBE Enabling young people to make the best use of their talents is my passion; for me it is what education means. While teaching sciences at Dean Close for over 33 years I used my positions as Head of Careers (28 years), Head of PSHE (12 years) and Housemistress (12 years) to further those aims.

As Head of Careers I developed programmes from Fourth Form right through to U6; these included careers/jobs awareness mornings, consequences of subject options at GCSE and A level, Work Experience, Careers Fairs, interview practice and UCAS preparation. The information sessions were always followed by individual interviews, with a member of the careers department. When I retired from Dean Close and taught at St. Edwards I was also involved with the careers advice and interview practice, particularly for Oxbridge.

Currently I tutor privately; this goes way beyond my subject specialism. Increasingly it includes working with undergraduates in the preparation of dissertations and other presentation assignments. For all age groups there is careers advice, and I still help many a candidate with their UCAS personal statement.

In my spare time I volunteer, interviewing School Leavers as part of their job preparation programmes. I am involved in all aspects of education as a Chairman of Governors at two schools and Vice chairman at a third. D M Fullerton I studied Modern Languages at Jesus College, Cambridge. I first came to Dean Close in 1987 before moving on to become Head of French at Bristol Grammar School in 1989. I returned to Dean Close six years later to take over as Head of Modern Languages, a post I occupied until September 2006, when I stepped down in order to run the Careers department.

I have been in charge of University entrance for 17 years and have processed over 1,700 UCAS forms.

I like sport, especially football and cricket and have supported Chelsea for over 45 years, the last eight as a season ticket holder. Aron Needs I am married with two children, 7 and 5 years old.

I have a Honours degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Hatfield College, Durham University. I then joined the Gloucestershire Constabulary for 5 years, before teaching Chemistry at Winchcombe School and Pate’s Grammar School and joined Dean Close in September 2003.

In my spare time my passions are playing Tennis, following Cheltenham Town and TSV

1860 Munich Football Club, listening to Blues music and going to the theatre, especially

the plays of Shakespeare.
