Foreword from the Dean of Agriculture

I am delighted to be invited to write this forward for the Handbook of soon-to-be graduates of the UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science on the occasion of the annual Agriculture, Food Science & Human Nutrition Career Day. Careers Day is a big day in the calendar of our school bringing together prospective employers and those that are soon to join the workforce and embark on fulfilling careers. Congratulations to Martin Merrick and the many members of the AgSoc Careers Committee. Thanks also to the many people from industry that have supported and contributed to the day in giving freely of their time and expertise to make the Careers Day a success.

On the whole agriculture, food and related industries continue to do well in Ireland with jobs, the agri-food economy and exports continuing a strong performance. However, there are dark clouds on the horizon. As I write this there are 50 days to go until the scheduled Brexit and there is as much uncertainty now about what will happen after that as there has been for the last two and a half years. The importance of the UK for Ireland’s trade and exports has been well articulated and while many businesses are planning for great change most anticipate significant difficulties in the short-to-medium term. Also attracting great attention these days are issues around solving the triple challenge of climate change, food demands and biodiversity loss; all of which are integral to agriculture and food systems.

Recognising challenges is one thing, being prepared and capable to take them on is another thing. Our programmes in UCD cover the broad spectrum of subjects ranging from the agri-environment, to land use and food production, to food science, human nutrition and agri-business. Our graduates are much sought after by employers because of their in-depth scientific training and their broad understanding of their chosen fields. They have the skills to solve problems that are presented to them but also to solve problems in the future that do not yet exist. I look forward to following their contribution to society, I wish them the very best in their careers, and I encourage them to continue learning and enjoy what life has to offer.

Foreword from Chairperson

It is my privilege as Chairperson of the UCD Agricultural science careers committee to welcome you all to UCD Ag Society’s annual Careers fair. The careers fair is a unique event in UCD where the students take it upon themselves to organise their own careers fair, a display of the initiative, drive and exceptional work ethic that UCD Ag Food grads are synonymous for.

The Agri-food sector In Ireland is undergoing huge growth and change at present and as an industry this seems set to continue. Whilst dairy has enjoyed growth of 300,00 cows and numerous new dairy units set up, the beef and pig industries have faced leaner times. This is the nature of farming and agriculture, with the beauty being the resilience and adaptability of the industry when faced with these difficult times.

As Brexit looms over us, it is important to remember that the Irish agri-food sector has endured Foot and Mouth, BSE and the horse meat scandal and are still a giant in the food and drinks export market. Whatever challenges face us, we will emerge from them a hardened and ever determined industry.

The UCD Ag careers fair has become a valued resource for employers to cherry pick the best the industry has to offer. Many of our company reps here with us today stood in our very shoes and have passed through the various undergrad programs offered by the School of Ag and Food. The UCD School of Ag and Food was recently ranked 19th in the world and 5th in Europe for Agricultural science programs. This is no mean feat and is a testament to the high standard of education that our lecturers have gifted to us in our 4 years here. We are privileged here in UCD with the quality of academic staff in the school.

As careers chairperson, and on behalf of the committee, I would like to thank all those who have assisted in to the careers fair to date. A special word of thanks must go to Farm Relief Services who have very generously sponsored this graduate booklet, as they have done for many years. I also wish to thank our speakers here today; Dean of Agriculture Professor Alex Evans who has taken time from his busy schedule to be with us here today and our ASA President Ami McKeever who has being hugely supportive of all events throughout the year and as always is a fantastic ambassador for Agricultural science. As with all Ag soc related events the staff of the school’s program office has been fantastic in assisting us in any way they can. To my own committee, I wish to thank you for your help in putting together this booklet and all your other assistance the past few weeks. Finally, a massive thank you to Damien Dempsey, our school Marketing manager. Damien is a fantastic asset to the school and his work often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves in promoting the UCD School of Agriculture and Food.

Finally, I wish all my peers the very best in your future careers. It has been a fantastic 4 years here in UCD with you all. It has been the single greatest decision in my life to come here to UCD to study Agriculture and the friendship and bonds, highs and lows have cemented us together. We have truly formed lifelong friendships in our time here that time or distance will not strain. It has been my great honour to have shared this time here with you, and I hope I have served you well as careers Chairperson.

Sincerely,Martin Merrick,

Careers Committee ChairpersonAgricultural Science Society 2018/19

Ian AtkinsonUpper Seskin, Leighlinbridge, Co. CarlowPhone: 0862415944 Email: [email protected] grown up on a dairy farm I have gained vast experience of the running of farming systems on a practical level. Having spent time both on a large farm in Canterbury New Zealand and also in the United States, I have had much exposure to both intensive and extensive dairy production systems. I have a deep understanding and appreciation for the work that it takes to run a dairy enterprise here in Ireland and am more than willing to assume responsibility in a working environment. My passion for hard work doesn’t just translate to agriculture. I am a dedicated Gaelic footballer, having been involved with numerous Carlow county teams, including captaining the u-21 team in 2017. I have developed a range of knowledge and expertise and look forward to working with someone where I can best apply my skills in the near future.

Sitting on UCD Ag Society’s committee for the past 3 years, this year serving as careers chair, I’ve gained excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.

In the US, I learned how to incorporate ecological practices to ensure farm sustainability, including conservation and integrated pest management.  On return, my PWE lab tech job consisted of managing the UCD Rosemount Root Phenotyping X-ray CT Suite. I am intellectually driven, and I am capable to work individually or on a team.

My work ethic and positive insight into the passionate profession has led me to believe that agriculture is the backbone of rural life. Agriculture however, works hand in hand with the environment and I understand the importance of linking farming practices with conscious efforts to protect our natural surroundings. My work placements with Teagasc, Westmeath County Council’s environment department and a dairy farm have shown me the different sides within the agri-environmental sector and has motivated me to strive in a profession which aims to create understanding and support between the two in order to protect our unique farming system and green image.
