NEW PROPERTY AND REAL ESTATE COURSEOpen the doors to the legal and property industry with Deakin University’s new combined course in property and real estate and law.

The legal profession and property industry are two key drivers of the Australian and global economy, with substantial common ground. This unique course builds on the strong synergy between the property and law disciplines. Graduates can become practising lawyers and also consider opportunities in a wide range of property-related companies and businesses.

Students will learn about the legalities, principles and processes required to fill a professional role in these fields, and gain an appreciation of a professional ethic, which emphasises responsibility and responsiveness to community needs.

Most legal firms work closely in property and real estate-related matters, and have a strong involvement with the property industry. Likewise, many organisations, such as government bodies, banks and finance companies, have requirements for qualified staff with a solid understanding of property fundamentals, which underpin economic society.

For more information, please visit deakin.edu.au/ study-at-deakin/find-a-course/property-and-real-estate or email Professor Richard Reed at [email protected].

PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE 4 GIRLS (PC4G)PC4G is a one-day event designed to introduce computer programming to Year 9 secondary school girls. It provides an opportunity for girls to experience programming and to understand the rewarding challenges that are provided through the combination of logic, problem-solving and creativity. School teams of two girls will complete a morning tutorial session on the innovative 3D programming environment Alice (alice.org), and using the knowledge they learn, will then compete in the afternoon challenge.

Teams must be accompanied by a member of their school’s teaching staff. While the challenge is underway, teaching staff will have the opportunity to participate in a professional development activity.

The challenge will take place on Friday 1 November from 9 am to 3.30 pm at Deakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

To register, please visit pc4g.org.nz and ‘Register Competitors’ by selecting the ‘Deakin University – Geelong’ competition site.

For more information, please contact Jo Coldwell-Neilson at [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming you to PC4G!

CADET – BRINGING VISION AND PASSION TO ENGINEERING EDUCATIONInnovation is at the heart of great engineering and the role of design in this process cannot be understated. Why then, is engineering education in Australia currently aligned more to science than design? And, are engineering graduates ready for the challenge of a digital revolution in manufacturing?

Perhaps not – which is why Professor Guy Littlefair, Head of Engineering in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, is addressing these questions head on. His response, ‘[to produce] a new generation of engineering graduates adept at creativity-led innovative thinking and design acumen’.This, in part, is a catalyst in his vision to redefine engineering education. Deakin University’s forthcoming Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) (deakin.edu.au/engineering/cadet) will provide some of the best design-focused engineering facilities in the Australian university sector.CADET will offer programs from Year 8 through to PhD level and will house virtual and real prototyping facilities, allowing creative design solutions to be developed almost seamlessly from imagination to reality to manufacture in a single journey. Be it new wind turbines, medical devices, sustainable infrastructure, alternative vehicles or robotic aids, CADET will provide the key elements for students to ‘imagineer the ultimate solution’.Construction commences later this year, with doors expected to open to students in 2015. For more information about engineering courses at Deakin, please visit deakin.edu.au/study-at-deakin/find-a-course/engineering.

COURSES TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL CAREER For students seeking a career creating sustainable design concepts for our towns and cities, or project managing large-scale commercial developments, Deakin University’s architecture and built environment courses can help make their dreams a reality.

Our courses incorporate technology, philosophy and electronic media and are hands on from the beginning, allowing students to turn imaginative ideas into solid objects.

The programs in Deakin’s School of Architecture and Built Environment allow students to pursue

their chosen field from day one, giving them the distinct advantage of being able to take classes that include both architecture and construction management students. By studying in multidisciplinary teams, students learn to work with allied professions in the building industry right from the beginning of their studies.

Work experience opportunities are a feature of Deakin courses, helping students gain valuable hands-on experience before they graduate. Students have an opportunity to apply and consolidate knowledge gained at university, experience workplace culture and work practices, explore career options and develop a professional network.

Deakin offers a unique combined course – the Bachelor of Design (Architecture)/Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours). This course takes an innovative, integrated approach that gives graduates cross-discipline career capability and recognition, and provides them with increased options in their future careers. The combined course can be followed by Deakin’s accredited one-year Master of Architecture (Design) for those interested in gaining professional registration as an architect.

For more information about architecture and built environment courses at Deakin, please visit deakin.edu.au/study-at-deakin/find-a-course/architecture-and-built-environment.

MIBT – OCTOBER (TRIMESTER 3) INTAKEGet into second year at Deakin University in July 2014 with MIBT’s October intake. With classes starting on 28 October 2013, students have the opportunity to fast-track their studies and complete their diploma in eight months – just in time for Deakin’s July intake in 2014 (conditions apply). If students are thinking of returning to study or changing courses, this intake is for them!

MIBT scholarship winner, Jacob Careno, is so happy with his MIBT experience that he insists his friends enrol. Jacob is also an MIBT ambassador, representing MIBT at functions and events to talk to future students about MIBT.

‘What I like about being an MIBT ambassador is having the chance to talk to Year 12 and other potential students who, like myself, never thought they’d be able to go to university,’ says Jacob.

Jacob is now in his final trimester at MIBT and is looking forward to going on to Deakin to pursue a combined course in commerce and law.

Apply online at www.mibt.vic.edu.au/apply-today or phone MIBT on 9244 5600 to make an appointment today!

STUDENT PROFILESARAH BROWNELL Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology Melbourne Burwood Campus Employed: Exercise Physiologist, Bounce Health Group

‘At university, I had the opportunity to complete clinical placement hours with seven different organisations that provided exercise physiology services. This meant that I was exposed to all possible fields of exercise physiology, including private practice, hospital, community-based rehabilitation centres and research studies. These opportunities provided the best possible learning outcomes, which have led me to where I am today.

Currently I am working full time for Bounce Health Group – a private sports medicine clinic. I service a range of clientele, including WorkCover injuries,

TAC injuries, Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) clients, Medicare-funded clients and private clients. My role consists of providing exercise rehabilitation services to people with any injury, illness or chronic disease. As part of my role at Bounce, I also conduct fitness testing sessions for amateur and elite sporting clubs.

The thing I enjoy most about my career is the fact that I am helping people. When I provide rehabilitation services for clients, both myself and they can see the results and it is extremely rewarding to know that I guided that client to where they are now; whether it be managing or curing an injury or illness.’

*Sarah completed a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at Deakin University and took the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) accredited major sequence. This sport-industry leading course is offered at the Melbourne Burwood Campus and Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.
