Carmelo Kyam Anthony, is an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National
Basketball Association (NBA).
● The youngest of four children, Carmelo Kyam Anthony was born May 29, 1984 in Brooklyn, New York City.
● When he was 2, his father, Carmelo Iriarte, died of liver failure. That left the care of the siblings in the hands of their mother who was a housekeeper.
● He was brought up in a tough neighborhood in Baltimore, where he learned his athletic skills.
● Sports would serve as an important diversion from the violence and drug dealing that were pervasive in the housing projects a few blocks from the homes of Anthony and his friends.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER● He attended high school at Towson Catholic High School and
joined Oak Hill Academy at Virginia for his senior year.● During his sophomore year, he averaged 14 points, 5
rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Upon reaching Junior High, he was already averaging 23 points and 10.3 rebounds

Carmelo became one of the area’s top players and made a name for himself, being named
“The Baltimore Sun’s metro player of the year” in 2001, Baltimore’s County Player of the Year,
All-Metropolitan Player of the Year and Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year.
PRE-PRO BASKETBALL
● After his junior year, coaches were lined up to recruit Anthony, which included North Carolina and Syracuse.
● The transition for Anthony proved tough, but he raised his test scores and his game, becoming the highest-ranked high school basketball player in the country.
COLLEGE CAREER● In contrast to prep-to-pro players like Kevin Garnett,
Jermaine O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant, he decided to attend Syracuse University.
● For his freshman year, Melo led Syracuse to their first ever ‘NCAA Tournament’ in 2003. They beat University of Kansas and he was named ‘Most Outstanding Player.’
● He was also named to the All-Big East First Team, Big East Conference Freshman of the Year, and the unanimous selection for Big East All Rookie Team.
● Later that spring, he wanted to go pro and declared himself eligible for the upcoming 2003 NBA draft.

● On June 26, 2003 Anthony was drafted into the NBA by ‘Denver Nuggets’ after he abandoned his collegiate career.
● In his 6th NBA game, on November 7, 2003, Anthony scored 30 points against Los Angeles Clippers to become the 2nd youngest after Kobe Bryant, to score 30 or more points in NBA history.
● He became the 2nd youngest player at 19 to score 40 or more points in NBA games, when Nuggets beat Seattle Super Sonic. Anthony scored 41 points.

NBA CAREER
● While playing for Denver, he led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010, winning two division titles in that span.
● During a game against Miami Heat on December 4, 2004, he became the 3rd youngest player to reach 2,000 points in NBA history.
● On March 17, 2006, he became the 2nd youngest player to cross 5,000 points during a game against Memphis Grizzlies.
● On January 24, 2008, Anthony was in the starting lineup of the NBA All-Star Game. He scored his 9,000th career point during the season and finished as NBA’s 4th leading scorer.

● On September 25, 2017, Anthony was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
● He moved past Reggie Miller into 19th place in the NBA career scoring ladder in 2018 and was soon traded to the Houston Rockets.
