Mayor’s welcomeThank you for attending Banyule’s very own Carols by Candlelight. Council has been staging this event for more than 20 years, giving the community a festive way to celebrate Christmas together.

We also continue to run the annual Banyule Children’s Gift Appeal and I thank the generous people who donated presents to bring some added joy to children from disadvantaged families.

I would also like to acknowledge our valued sponsors Haughton Stotts Real Estate and Commonwealth Bank. We truly appreciate their ongoing support which helps us put on such a special event.

Have a wonderful evening with your family, friends and neighbours, and on behalf of the staff at Banyule Council and my fellow councillors, I wish you a merry Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year.

Once in Royal David’s City

Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band

Once in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her BabyIn a manger for His bed:

Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little Child.

He came down to earth from heaven,Who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable,And His cradle was a stall;

With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Savior holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentle

Is our Lord in heaven above,And He leads His children on

To the place where He is gone.

The First Noel

Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band

The First Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds

in fields as they lay;In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep,

On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far,And to the earth it gave great light,

And so it continued both day and night.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heavenly Lord;

That hath made heaven and earth of naught,And with his blood mankind hath bought

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

Silent Night

Australian Children’s Choir

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright.

Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.Holy infant so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace,Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!Shepherds quake at the sight.

Glories stream from heaven afarHeavenly hosts sing Alleluia,

Christ the Savior is born!Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!Son of God, love’s pure light.

Radiant beams from Thy holy faceWith dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus Lord, at Thy birthJesus Lord, at Thy birth

Prayer and praising all men raising Worshipping God most high

Oh, star of wonder, star of nightStar with royal beauty bright

Westward leading still proceeding Guide us to Thy perfect light

Away in a Manger

Liz Cherry with the Australian Children’s Choir

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus! look down from the sky,And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stayClose by me forever, and love me I pray.

Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,And take us to heaven to live with thee there.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Liz Cherry with the Australian Children’s Choir

Said the night wind to the little lambDo you see what I see?

Way up in the sky little lambDo you see what I see?

A star, a star, dancing in the night, with a tail as big as a kiteWith a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boyDo you hear what I hear?

Ringing through the sky shepherd boyDo you hear what I hear?

A song, a song, high above the tree, with a voice as big as the seaWith a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty kingDo you know what I know?

In your palace warm, mighty kingDo you know what I know?

A child, a child, shivers in the cold, let us bring him silver and goldLet us bring him silver and gold

Said the king to people everywhereListen to what I say!

Pray for peace, people everywhereListen to what I say!

The child, the child, sleeping in the night, he will bring us goodness and light

He will bring us goodness and light
