The ChallengeCranfield University takes climate change seriously. Their Carbon Management Plan commits to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2020 compared to a 2005 baseline. To assist in this aim, the University wanted to apply to Salix Ltd to secure funding for energy saving measures, one of which was for the installation of LED lighting across the campus buildings. LASER assisted the University with their bid by surveying a range of buildings and providing the technical information required to submit a funding application. The application for funding was successful and Salix awarded £400k to begin works.

Building 45, a 759.55sqm office space was the first area the University was keen to improve. The University’s facilities team wanted LASER to work closely with the building users to make sure all stakeholders were happy with the proposed lighting before full installation began. It was also vital LASER kept disruption to a minimum, allowing business as usual to continue during the day.

The SolutionLASER conducted a full survey of building 45 light levels and specified the installation of 189 LED replacement fittings. Straight away the building saw a 10% reduction in the number of fittings needed, maximising the energy saving potential of the installation. The low energy replacement fittings also use 40% fewer watts, and a consistent design approach gave the building the same ‘look’ throughout.

To assist the University with user engagement LASER installed a test area in advance. This allowed users to preview the final lighting design in a discreet area, and gave the opportunity for them to assess and comment on the working environment that would be achieved.

Once all stakeholders were happy with the proposed design the installation was carried out during the evening, allowing business as usual to continue during the day.

The ResultsThe final installation was accepted by all as a success. Building users approved of their new lighting, which supplies good light levels throughout from fewer fittings. The new installation is more energy efficient, the on-site energy team have evidenced a 29.5% drop in building electricity post-installation for the full year.

The way the installation was carried out in building 45 proved to be a success.

LASER’s approach to the feedback received from our staff and students was extremely professional and this has given us a great benchmark for the way we install the works in the other buildings on site. We are already seeing a 29.5% reduction in energy and are looking forward to achieving more savings as each new installation progresses.

Even during the ‘Beast from the East’ last February/March there was a 22% reduction in electricity use across those two months in 17/18 compared with 16/17.
