DESCRIPTION

The exacting rigour of Alpine hill climbs, heritage precision and a celebration of craftsmanship married to the demands of a modern young family were our starting points for this garden on the west side of Vancouver. An adult entertainment zone and a children’s play area are divided to form a deck structure, terracing down to a generous lawn and bespoke dining table constructed out of a neccessarily felled Douglas Fir tree.

The exacting rigour of Alpine hill climbs, heritage precision and a celebration of craftsmanship married to the demands of a modern young family were our starting points for this garden on the west side of Vancouver.

An adult entertainment zone and a children’s play area are divided to form a deck structure, terracing down to a generous lawn and bespoke dining table constructed out of a necessarily felled Douglas Fir tree.

Geometry is employed to articulate the horizontal surface of the deck structure. Inspiration is taken from the dynamics of track racing and the woven patterns of team jerseys. The result is weeknight father and son car racing sessions before bed time. Then cocktails are enjoyed in the ensuing peace and quiet.

Materials are chosen for their durability and luxurious qualities. Oiled Ipe is juxtaposed with a satin finished stainless steel. A sand box doubles as an integrated future herb garden and a line of Aspen trees provide a dancing screen to the laneway, helping to reinforce the physical passing of seasons and mirroring a family growing and changing over time.
