Ever since he hit overnight superstardom with his 1960 hit “The Twist,” Chubby Checker has done more to change the way we dance than any other art-ist before or since. Throughout the decade, Checker released one hit record after another, including “Slow Twistn’,” “Popeye the Hitchhiker,” and “Let’s Twist Again” (for which he won a Grammy), “The Fly,” and “Limbo Rock,” many of which also inspired dances by the same name.

In 2007 Chubby returned to the charts with “Knock Down The Walls,” a No. 1 dance track on Billboard, and in 2008 the magazine named “The Twist” the biggest hit song of all time, the only single to top the Billboard Hot 100 twice.

Checker remains a tireless performer, supported by his wife of 52 years, former Dutch Model and Miss World 1962, Catharina Lodders, with whom he has several children, including

WNBA star Mistie Bass. He also credits his fans for keeping him inspired. “The energy I get from sing-ing and dancing with all these people over the years is unlike anything else I experience,” he has said. “I never want it to end.”

I’m going to tell you a story. A story of love, of rare wine, of exquisite din-ners, of a warm wet kiss, and a long-shot gamble.

One evening way back in Ancient Egypt, Mark Antony and the incredibly alluring Cleopatra were aboard Cleo’s late-model royal barge. As they moved with the tide along the Nile, they en-joyed a sumptuous meal of desert quail, fresh sardines, figs, capers, and sweet and spicy olives, all washed down with the best wine to be had in the entire Val-ley of the Kings.

Lying back against an immense pil-low, watching the skies above turn into a Technicolor riot of oranges, reds, and pinks, Antony sighed and exclaimed, “It just doesn’t get any better than this!”

Cleo turned her delicate body toward Mark and planted a sultry kiss on his wine-stained lips. Then, propping her-self up on her elbows, she looked up at her lover, batted her violet-colored eyes, and asked, “Mark, my love, do you ever gamble?”

“What, are you kidding me?” he re-plied “Every day is a gamble. What do you have in mind?”

Three minutes is all it took for Thomas Babcock to belly up to the Titanic penny slot at Sky City Casino, drop in some coins, and then blink in amazement as his third spin hit the jackpot. And not just any jackpot. This one was worth $3.7 million!

As a recreational casino gambler, you shouldn’t necessarily aim for the highest number of wins but for getting the most bang for your wagering buck. Sure, it’s more fun when you win, but playing with a fixed amount and making it last for your entire session carries rewards of its own.

Granted, this is difficult to do when playing the slots. Having the discipline to call it a day when your bankroll is depleted is rare; managing profits when you win is rarer still. Table games on the other hand make it much easier to stick to your financial guns. The pace is slower, which means the house edge doesn’t take such a demanding toll. What’s more, you have a better chance of taking advantage of a fortuitous run.

Let’s take craps, for instance. You don’t have to know everything about the game to play. Step up and buy in for $50 in chips and you can be on your way to a fun time. Making a place bet on the six and/or the eight at a $5 table is my favorite strategy. A place wager on either number is $6. If the shooter

rolls the number, you will be paid $7.Here’s a simple and fun method:Make a $6 place bet on the eight. There are

five ways to make an eight out of the 36 pos-sible combinations of the dice. Your goal is for the shooter to roll an eight before a seven. Say the shooter rolls an eight. You’ll be paid $7. Take a dollar profit and “press” your bet on the eight to $12. If it hits again, you’ll be paid $14.

At this point you can keep the $14, take your $12 bet off the eight, and you will have made a tidy $21 profit on your original $6 wager.

If you want to be daring, take it one step further. After the eight hits a second time, take $6 from your $14 score, press your bet to $18, and pocket the other $8. You’ve already made a $3 profit on your

original bet; what you have on the table is a portion of your winnings.

If the eight hits again, you’ll win another $21 and still have your $18 bet in action.

If you want to ride a hot streak, press your bet again to $24. Or, do what I do: take the $21 and reduce your bet on the eight to the original $6 that you invested. Your total profit at this point will be $42. Then you can try to pull off the progression all over again.

The same math applies to making a place bet on the six. If you get ahead a little bit, try making a place bet on both the six and eight.

When the method works and the dice are hot, a recreational player can have more fun at the craps table than they ever thought possible

Dear Mark: Long-time reader, first time writing in. I am going to Las Vegas in Oc-tober—my first trip—for the World of Con-crete convention at the Las Vegas Conven-tion Center. With tens of thousands of us non-gamblers showing up, I am curious to know if the casino can flip a switch to make the machines hold more, or, if that is not pos-sible, swap out the machines to ones that are tighter. Also, what are some of the expected returns that I will find on slot machines on the Strip where I am staying? —Marv B.

No, Marv, there is no magic switch that’s flipped from some secret undisclosed loca-tion, nor chip or machine swapping happen-ing to hornswoggle unsuspecting convention-eers out of their dough.The only time that a machine is swapped out is when manage-ment believes it is underperforming or de-cides to convert the machine to a newer or more popular model. Believe me, Marv, it is no bang-bang deal when they do. There is a litany of lengthy sequential steps the casino has to take in most gaming jurisdictions to change the percentage return more in the ca-sino’s favor. With thousands of machines on the floor, it is not cost-effective for casinos to vary the payouts on weekends, holidays, or during your concrete convention. Unques-tioning tourists are safe—for now.

As for the hold percentage averages for the Las Vegas Strip, they are approximately 11 percent for nickels, 6 to 7 percent for quar-ters, 4 percent for dollars, and 3.5 percent for five dollars and above.
