LOTE FACULTY NEWS

LOTE (Languages Other Than English) is a critical subject in NSW public schools. All public high school

students in NSW are required to complete 100 hours mandatory study of a language other than English

between Years 7 to 10. At Casino High School every Year 8 student meets this requirement through their

Japanese lessons. Often students will ask “When will I ever use Japanese in my lifetime?” or “How can

this subject help me?”

Learning other languages has many cognitive benefits. People who speak more than one language have

improved memory, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Along with improved concentration,

ability to multitask and enhancement of their listening skills. Learning a language forces students to

create meaning from other cultural systems, which in turn can increase cultural awareness, empathy,

and tolerance of other people. Ultimately learning a language can create better students of the world

and being bilingual can increase employment opportunities.

There is much more learnt in Japanese than just the language. Understanding Japanese culture can open

our students’ eyes to the history of Japan, martial arts, entertainment, culture and fashion. Learning

Japanese not only helps students learn about another culture but can also give them an appreciation of

their own culture and language and can improve their communication skills.

Japan and Australia have very strong economic, military and tourism connections and Japan is a country

with such a diverse and vibrant culture for students to engage with. A few fast growing areas in Japan

include defence, cyber-security, VR-technology and Agri-technology. There will be an increased need for

Japanese speaking Australians to work in all these areas in both Australia and Japan.

Year 8 students this year have learnt about anime, greetings, classroom objects, naming body parts, and

many cultural aspects. This term they have been learning Japanese numbers and how to count from 1 to

10 in Japanese.

This week students will be learning about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II

and the impact nuclear war can have. They will have the chance to make origami cranes in recognition

and memory of Sadako Sasaki.

Macquarie University Presents NISEP 2019

Once again Casino High School was host to the National Indigenous Science Education Program. Our Year

7 and Leap classes were very involved whilst trying out the activities. Select students from Years 8 to 11

demonstrated dry ice, ooblek, slime, fingerprints, smell tests, the proscope, and invisible inks to the

visiting students. Elephant’s toothpaste and the polystyrene bead race were presented to the whole

group by students in lab coats and glitter hats.

One Vision Hip Hop Workshop

During Term 2, one day a week, a group of students from Years 7 to 10 participated in the Hip Hop Workshop. The result is a video of their song which we have just previewed. I am very proud of our students who overcame their shyness and participated in the workshops. A number of students even performed at the school’s NAIDOC Assembly held last term.

Each week staff from One Vision helped the students to identify things that mattered to them, choose a beat, write lyrics and record them and act for the film clip. We filmed around school and at Evans Head. The video will be available to view soon via the school’s Facebook page.

We would like to thank Jamo, Dani and Rangimarie from One Vision for their guidance and encouragement.

Senior CAPA Music Night

On Wednesday night the music room came alive with the sometimes loud and other times subtle

sounds of the current Year 12 students performing their HSC pieces to an audience of friends and

family. It was an intimate affair where students; Casey Ellis, Emily Brooker, Sophia Pitman and Ryley

Scott gained experience from performing their songs in a high pressure scenario, emulating the

experience they’ll receive when coming face to face with examiners for the HSC Performance

Assessment later this term. They received valuable feedback from examiners Jason Ayala Spare and

Michael Andrews and were assisted greatly by students from Years 11 and 9; Shaun Porter on bass, Kurt

Johnston on guitar and Josiah Thomas on

drums and congas. Shaun was also

instrumental in managing sound for the

entire event. We were unfortunate to

have Jamie Carroll unable to perform but

the remaining performers showed gusto,

grace and grooviness in performing their

pieces.

Thank you to all involved.
