Easter flowers

We will be decorating St Peter’s Church for Easter on Saturday 19th April from 10am. If anyone would like to come and help or give flowers, foliage, or a donation towards flowers, perhaps in memory of a loved-one, it would be most appreciated.

A Karnataka update

Many of you helped Maddy Bakewell raise money to fund her trip to India with Raleigh International so here’s a brief update on what she’s been up to out there ...

After spending four days at base camp we took a very bumpy ride to our village, Mahadeswara where we will be working with MYCAPS on a water and sanitation project that looks incredible . The arrival was amazing. All the children came out of school to greet us with smiles and flowers and the villagers all wanted to shake our hands.

We are living in a community hall that was especially painted for us. We needed to do a little DIY and put up some nails to hold our mosquito nets and now I have my own little palace!

We went into the school today, it ’s so lovely and colourful and the children try so hard to speak English : they are so cute! One of our goals is to raise knowledge of basic hygiene; we’ve been teaching about brushing teeth and we have a huge cutout mouth and toothbrush for the kids to have a go. We are off to a bigger village later to buy some glitter to help with our washing hands session .

In the evening we went to a community meeting to explain why we are here and what we are hoping to do during the next nine weeks. We’ve done lots of planning, discussion and risk assessments and soon we start building nine bathrooms for the homes in the village without their own toilet.

Things I am missing – My bed. My shower. Milk. Ice . Lie ins.

However the sunsets always cheer me up and I’m actually loving it here .

Namaskara, Maddy

Easter – an advert for SkodasIn our family we have bought three Skoda Fabias in recent years, all of which have been great cars with few problems. Two of these we still run, the oldest with 140,000 on the clock, no rust and still running well. Buying a Skoda today is not a bad purchase.

In contrast, back in the ’70s and ’80s if you bought a Skoda you were a laughing stock. Their reputation was terrible; quality control was appalling and the product unreliable. They were bad cars – possibly the worst. BUT even Skodas can change and nobody back then could ever have imagined the reliable and value-for-money cars that now have the Skoda badge. Even Jeremy Clarkson talked glowingly about the Skoda Yeti!

Even the worst can change.Recently two ‘whole-life’ sentences have been

given for two horrific crimes. Michael Adebolajo, one of the two murderers of soldier Lee Rigby, and the serial murderer Joanna Dennehy were both given whole-life terms, which means they can never be even considered for parole. The giving of a whole-life sentence says that we, today, don’t believe that this person can ever change; they are forever condemned, there is no room for possible repentance, for rehabilitation or for reconciliation with society.

You may agree with the use of this sentence for a variety of reasons. I would certainly acknowledge that, sadly, there have been cases where prisoners on fixed tariffs have been released

(and some paroled early) and have reoffended even though they were regarded as very low risk and under probation. However, whole-life tariff means that there is no hope, no incentive to change, no chance of being able to make something valuable of their life for the individual. People under a whole-life sentence are condemned as less than human with no capacity to change. Even a ninety-nine-year tariff would give a chance of consideration to apply for parole after fifty years.

Thankfully, the message of Easter and of the Christian faith is that, because of Christ’s death on the cross and subsequent resurrection there is hope, there is room for repentance and reconciliation. There is hope for us all. Even for John Newton, the slave ship captain complicit in inhumane treatment, degrading torture, abuse, and multiple murder, there was, by his own assertion, ‘Amazing Grace’ enough to ‘save a wretch like me’ who was ‘lost’ but was completely turned around, writing that famous hymn and campaigning for the abolition of the slave trade.

Against all the odds Skodas did have the potential to change and we all have the potential for change however small, and to say that there is never any potential to change for any individual cannot be Christian.

Some of Jesus’ last words on the cross were to the criminal beside him on the cross who admitted his sin and asked Jesus to remember Him when He came into his kingdom. Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise”. (Luke 23:39–43, page 98 in your Jubilee New Testament). Happy Easter.

Desert Island DiscsLast month’s castaway was former editor of this very publication, Kevin Hinton. There were several correct answers but the first person who emailed was Yvonne Wright.

Castaways get to pick their eight favourite pieces of music (of any genre) along with a favourite book and a ‘luxury’ item. The first two castaways were probably fairly well known to most people and not too difficult to guess. This month’s castaway is perhaps a bit harder and you need to think of the wider community, especially at this time of year:

1. Horace Wimp – ELO. This was the song that I kept playing to myself before I asked my wife out

all those years ago.2. Come Back My Love – Darts. The first single I bought, it has an amazing timeless musical memory

3. Killer Queen – Queen. I could have chosen many by this band; I saw them in concert in

1986 at Wembley on their Magic tour – amazing concert. I spent many hours in the union bar drinking coffee and missing lectures, and every time I put this on the juke box!4. Canon in D – Johann Pachelbel. My wife walked down the aisle to this when we got married in 1993.5. 68 Guns – The Alarm. You cannot beat this band for a live band experience. I heard this song when it was first released and was hooked – I’ve seen them many, many times in concert, including in the middle of a hurricane when the power

went off and they continued with an acoustic set.6. The Sweetest Thing – U2. I am a total softie at

heart and this was playing on the radio fifteen years ago as I went to see my first son being born. It still brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it.

7. Still A Lot Of Love Round Here – Martyn Joseph. An obscure Welsh singer–songwriter

who I again saw in the early 1980s and is still going strong today. I saw him at an acoustic set last summer – again they pulled the plug – but he kept on going and this was the song playing at the time.8. I Wish I Was James Bond – Scouting for Girls. What more can I say ...My luxury item is a pillow – everywhere I go I like to take my pillow – with feathers! The extra book would be Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, a story of resilience, reality, forgiveness and redemption. I could hum a few tunes too from the show if needed …

Notice of Temporary Traffic Order

Yarnton, Cassington Road

Prohibition of Vehicles

Date of Order: 24 March 2014

Coming into force: 7 April 2014 This Order is being introduced because of carriageway maintenance works in part of Cassington Road which is anticipated to take 17 days to complete. The effect of the Order, when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed, is to prohibit any vehicle from proceeding or waiting in that part of Cassington Road westwards from Pound Close for 1200 metres. Exemptions are included for police, fire and ambulance services and for the works and for vehicular access to adjacent premises which are only accessible from the closed section of road. The alternative route is via Cassington, A40 and A44 & vice versa. The heavy line indicates the part of the road that will be closed. Another alternative route might be via the A44 and Bladon, since it looks like the lane from Bladon will be accessible. Village green matters

Well folks, the British Legion has retained the grass cutting and maintenance of the village green. At 89 I will do my best to do as usual. The one thing that does hurt after all the years I have looked after the green is that I must now book each mow I do. Having been trusted for thirty plus years I find doing this a bit frustrating. I did mow it for nothing first of all, then hit on the idea of helping the British Legion.

Thank you to Mr and Mrs Cropper for their help getting the War Memorial grass mown and with watering the memorial flowers; we also wish Mr Cropper a good recovery from his hospital visit. Thanks to Clare Want for helping my sister Susan Partridge with planting, etc, of the geraniums she grew in her greenhouse and supplied. Thank you to Godfrey Phillips for strimming last year – I hope he can continue this year. I would also point out I am mowing more parts than I quoted for originally, just to keep the village tidy. Don’t forget the people that mow the green down Bell Lane. I missed out Francis Howlett – sorry!

My problem is I love this old village and all the work I have done could not be done for the price I do it for if I was making a living out of it. I don’t think this is appreciated. I will get our strimmer man to continue, I hope, but without the backing of my family I could not carry on. I don’t know who is doing the cutting round the church – I doubt if the present gent makes any money at it.

I was so pleased to see that something is being done about the village hall although I did not see any mention of the most important problem – parking. Whatever they do, this will control their operation, especially once the school extension gets going and more cars come.

At the last parish council meeting I noticed the amount needed to repair the pavilion – a sign of the times. Some years back there were enough tradesmen who would have carried out this work with the help of others if the materials were supplied.

It was wonderful to see the church full several weeks back for a baptism. Come on folks, if the congregation keeps on falling off there will be no church in which to get baptised, married and buried ... but there was very good support to help with the bells so I may be wrong.

Margaret Partridge (secretary) and Glenda Appleton (president) gave their reports and it was agreed by all that we had had a very successful year, with visits, lectures and events. April 2014

WinsTon’s Wish BrEakfasTLast year we had a very successful ‘Big Brekkie’ event in which we raised money for ‘Winston’s Wish’, a charity which supports bereaved children. This year, our lead on the event, Julie Bignone, gathered her team and decided to put on the Big Brekkie on Shrove Tuesday. This, of course, meant that not only was there a copious quantity of croissants, toast, cereal and coffee but also pancakes! This was very well received by the children (and parents) who consumed a phenomenal amount of maple syrup, which they liberally applied to their pancakes. The brekkie was very successful and nearly all of our families and some members of the community attended. So, after taking out the cost of 100 croissants, 80 pancakes, 40 waffles, 5 boxes of cereal and 12 pints of milk we raised £237 in total. Well done team!

On the theme of breakfasts we are starting up a daily breakfast club for the children after Easter. This is to support those families who would like an earlier start in the morning. To prove that we are not just about maple syrup and jam we have also introduced a scheme which offers every child in the school a piece of fruit every morning – a facility which is free. The selection of different fruits, including apples, bananas, satsumas, raisins, pears, etc has meant that nearly all of the children are now regularly eating one piece of fruit a day.

nETBall

For such a small school we have a wide range of sporting clubs, including football, judo, tag rugby, gymnastics and netball. The older children also run lunchtime clubs on similar lines. We have set up tournaments for our partnership schools and our most recent netball tournament proved a big success. It was held on the all-weather court at Eynsham Primary School and five teams played. We won and lost but came away with a great sense of achievement.

sT PETEr’s ChurCh of England Primary and nursEry

Next week sees the grand opening of our Nursery by the Bishop of Dorchester (more on that in the next edition of the CAWN). After Easter we will have completed the amalgamation with Cassington Pre-school and all should be running smoothly. If you wish your pre-school child to join us in September then please email the school office at [email protected] or phone 01865 880443.

mud!Our reception children (and staff) have been to Hillend where they have been exploring the delights of mud kitchens and using recycled items to incorporate into their play. I am looking forward to seeing how this develops!

ToilETsWe are in the process of updating various areas in the school and our latest project has been to redo the older children’s toilet facilities. They chose the colours and I hope that they will be suitably wowed by their new toilets when they return from the Easter Holiday.

Eynsham ParTnErshiP aCadEmy uPdaTEWe are getting ever closer to becoming an academy and joining our Partnership schools as part of the Eynsham Partnership Academy. Our date for conversion is 1st June. The only visible outward sign for the village will be a slightly different sign.

sainsBury's VouChErsWe cannot say thank you enough to the villagers who bring to us their Sainsbury's Vouchers. This year we will be using them for cookery equipment such as mixing bowls, sieves and baking trays so that we can teach the children to cook. If you do your shopping at Sainsbury's please collect your vouchers and pop them in to us. Thank you.

THE CHURCH is open for prayer every day (address below).

THE HALL (The Tolkien Room) is available for hire. Tel: 0745 4824234 or email [email protected].

OUR HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SERVICES are as follows:

Palm Sunday, 13th April traditional procession and Mass, 10amMonday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Mass 5.30pm Holy Thursday, 17th April, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, 7.30pm followed by a Watch of Prayer till MidnightGood Friday, 18th April, Liturgy of the Passion, 3pm Service for all the Eynsham Churches in the Square, 10amHoly Saturday, 19th April, Easter Vigil and First Mass of Easter, 8.30pmEaster Day, 20th April, Sunday Mass, 10am

CONFESSIONS take place after Mass on Sunday 13th April and on Thursday 17th April and Holy Saturday 19th April at 12 noon, or on request. Remember that you can ask to make your Confession just sitting and talking in a room if you prefer. If you are not sure what to do just turn up, or arrange a time, and just tell Father Martin this and he will help you.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS continues every Monday in Lent at 5pm or you can come into church any time during daylight hours and walk round and follow them quietly by yourself. Booklets to help you will be available just inside the side entrance.

THE CEREMONIES OF HOLY WEEK include the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, when the priest washes the feet of some people while we sing of God’s love for us. After Mass until midnight we light candles and create our own Garden of Gethsemane and people come to watch, just as Jesus asked his disciples to do. On Good Friday we read the whole story of the suffering and death of Jesus as told in St John’s Gospel and then people come forward to kneel at the foot of a cross and kiss it. On Holy Saturday we begin outside in the dark with the Easter Fire and then carry the Easter Candle into Church. We then

have a vigil of readings and Psalms from the Old Testament before the lights come on and Easter begins. We then renew our baptismal vows and are sprinkled with the Easter water.

AN EASTER COURSE will take at place St Peter’s this year instead of a Lent course. We are aiming for four Tuesdays starting on Tuesday 29th April. The format will be rather different as each week a parishioner will be interviewed about their life and their faith and will share some things that have helped them. We hope for a slightly Desert Island Discs flavour, with maybe a couple of their favourite tunes or songs played, and perhaps their favourite hymn. Maybe they will tell us their favourite book or author as well? The courageous participants are Catherine Baker, Tony O’Malley, Tony Horan and Leigh and Jo Waite.

A CENTRAL TABERNACLE has been proposed by Father Martin so that the Blessed Sacrament will be reserved directly behind the altar under the crucifix and the crossed keys on the wall. This is where you will find the Blessed Sacrament in most Catholic churches unless they are cathedrals. A wooden pillar will be built that will match the lectern and the church already owns a tabernacle that has been displayed in church for all to see. This has been greeted with much enthusiasm by most people, with generous offers to contribute to its cost from various people. It also means that the priest now sits to one side at Mass and this too seems to be working well and means that the main focus will not be on the priest but on Christ present for us in the Blessed Sacrament.

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW WEBSITE? Why not have a look, at: www.stpeterseynsham.org.uk. Thanks to Les Zieleznik for looking after this for us. Many people find us first, and come to Mass by looking at this website, so see for yourself how all the information about the parish is laid out. Last month we had a family visit who were searching for Tolkien connections. Les is also good at chasing Father Martin if he forgets to put the monthly news or his homily onto it. Yes, this is a place where you can read the homily, but you can also see all this and all the past homilies on Father Martin’s blog at www.frmartinflatman.wordpress.com

MORE CYCLE RACKS have been fitted to join the two on the car park wall on the far right. They are beside the side door to the church to the left of the steps and by the main church door to the right at the far end of the space where the bins are.

MUSICAL CELEBRATION

Kidlington and Yarnton Medical Group

We would like to say a big thank you to those of you who completed this year’s patient questionnaire. The results revealed that many patients were not aware that we are now open five full days a week in Yarnton and also offer early morning appointments and later evening appointments at both sites. We now also have the facility to book appointments on line and to accept requests for prescriptions electronically.

The survey showed that on occasion at both Kidlington and Yarnton surgeries the telephone isn’t answered promptly. To improve this we have made several adjustments to the system.

1st June brings a new partner to the practice. We welcome Dr Mathi, who will be based mainly at Yarnton in order to give continuity to our patients.

We welcome new patients to both practices – please look at our website: www.kidlingtonandyarntonsurgery.co.uk for information on the services we offer.

Get fitter for summer

A new round of eight-week ‘Just Jog’ sessions for beginners is being rolled out after Easter in Carterton, Eynsham and Witney. With nutritional advice, help and support provided, the sessions are aimed at those who have no, or very little, previous experience of jogging. Intermediate sessions will also be available for those who have some experience and would like to improve their pace and skills.

The Eynsham sessions will take place weekly from Sunday 27 April, meeting at Bartholomew Sports Centre, Back Lane from 9–10am.

The sessions will be led by running instructor Lisa Betteridge as part of a community project run by West Oxfordshire District Council and its leisure contractor, GLL, which runs its leisure facilities. Lisa only started jogging three years ago herself as part of a mother-and-child exercise group after the birth of her son. She went on to complete instructor training and is preparing for her first London Marathon this year. She says: “If I can do it, anyone can! Jogging is a great way of keeping fit and the sessions are very sociable. It is good motivation to be part of a group and it’s amazing how quickly you can see yourself improving week-by-week.”

The cost of the eight-week course is £24 for leisure centre members or £32 for non-members. Simply turn up and pay on the day. For more information, call 07595 090379 or email [email protected].

parish notesThe council met on 6th March with six members of the public present.

MATTERS ARISINGa) Forthcoming Parish Council Election. The Clerk reported that the parish councillors will retire from office in May 2014. Notice of Election will be published on 14th April and new councillors will come into office on 27th May. The Annual Meeting of the council will take place on 5th June. The date for the Annual Parish Meeting will be agreed at the next meeting.

b) Report from the Clerk on actions from the last meeting. The Clerk reported that the Elms Rd Playing Field sign had been refixed by the county council. A letter had been sent to the resident in Hollow Furlong asking for his hedge to be cut back. A reply was still awaited from WODC concerning the alleged breach of planning conditions concerning the height of the wall and hedge to properties in Hollow Furlong. The shrubbery overhanging the Highway in Bell Lane had been reported to Highways. The flooding of properties in Church Lane had been reported to Thames Water. Anna Thomas has organised defibrillator training for Saturday 12th April in the Village Hall.

c) Bike Night – feedback on recent meeting. Cllr Martin reported on a recent meeting to discuss Bike Night. There were now sufficient numbers of people who had come forward to join the committee, headed by Martin Ritchie, so the event could go ahead. The copyright to the Bike Night name was discussed and it was agreed the council should acquire ownership of the Bike Club’s share of the copyright. This will enable the council to nominate the copyright to village organisations organising future Bike Nights. Cllr Wilkinson will discuss this with members of the Bike Club. It was agreed to arrange for St John’s Ambulance to attend the event, subject a risk assessment being provided by the Bike Night Committee.

CORRESPONDENCEa) To consider a Sect 137 grant application from the Sports & Social Club for repairs to the Sports Pavilion. A schedule of repairs to the Sports Pavilion amounting to £8,500 approx had been given to Cllr Thomas. Cllr Wilkinson said the parish council did not have funds in its budget to make such a large grant. Cllr Poole said there were grants available for community facilities from WODC. The ORCC at Jericho Farm could provide advice on grants. Cllr Mathew said the government backed WREN organisation also provided community grants.

b) Consultation on Draft Oxon Minerals & Waste Local Plan OCC. Cllr Mathew said a meeting to discuss the plan had been arranged in Eynsham for 28th March. The plan calls for greater extraction to the south of the county so that it meets the demands for development in that area rather than transporting gravel from the north of the county to the south. The date for submission of comments is 7th April.

c) To consider the purchase of dog fouling stickers. The Clerk had circulated an email with details of cartoon-style stickers. There was concern about lack of suitable locations for the stickers. It was agreed to discuss this further at the midmonth planning meeting.

REPORTS FROM COUNTY, DISTRICT & PARISH COUNCILLORSCllr Poole reported on the recent Flood Forum that he attended, organised by the county council. WODC are prepared to construct local sand bunkers if parish councils can provide the land. The Clerk agreed to ask the Sports and Social Club about a suitable site for a sand bunker and discuss its construction with WODC.

A Strategic Housing Market Assessment is to be completed shortly which will inform the West Oxon Local Plan.

Cllr King raised the issue of the previously reported potholes in Horsemere Lane. The Clerk agreed to ask Highways to expedite repairs.

QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLICThe question of the white hatching on the A40 was raised again. The

Clerk agreed to raise the problem again with Cllr Mathew.

Surface water collecting on the A40 slip road was raised. The Clerk agreed to report this to Highways.

The need for a survey of village drains, before the houses in Yarnton Rd are built was raised. WODC had imposed a condition on the planning consent concerning this. However, given drainage problems in the Bell Lane area WODC must co-ordinate with Thames Water to ensure there is drainage capacity to cope with additional homes. The Clerk will ask WODC if the planning condition has been fulfilled.

James Stoney, Business Development Manager from Anesco, spoke about the proposed Solar Park near to the Sewage Farm on the Cassington to Yarnton Road. He was looking for comments prior to submitting a planning application. It was suggested information was placed in CAWN or a public meeting be arranged in the village.

DITCHES, DRAINAGE AND FLOODINGThe Clerk said he would arrange for the sand to be removed from the playing field car park.

MAINTENANCETenders for village grass cutting: Cllr Wilkinson reported that five tenders were received for the burial ground and three for the village greens. It was agreed to accept the lowest tenders received.

TRAFFICTraffic speed data had been provided by Highways for the Yarnton Rd close to Bell Lane. Further data was needed near to eastern side Worton Farm to help with the Yarnton Rd speed limit campaign. Clerk to action with Highways.

PLAY AREA/ FIELDTwo contractors had provided quotations for repairs to the play area fence. It was agreed to obtain a third quotation in view of the large disparity between the two quotes. Clerk to action.

FINANCEa) Payments. It was agreed to make the following payments after considering the budget position:OALC subscription £139.63Cllr Clague – allowance £20.00Cassington Village Hall booking for defibrillator training £45.50

b) IncomeBurial income £110.00Interest on treasury bond £121.00

PLANNING APPLICATIONSPlanning ref no 14/0256/P/FP – Conversion of part of garage to home office – 8 Orchard Close, Cassington.Cllr Martin registered an interest in this application, therefore there being no quorum of councillors the item was deferred to the next meeting.

ANY OTHER BUSINESSThe Clerk reported that Cottsway Housing will be resurfacing the access road to the play area during the week commencing Monday 10th March. This was requested by the parish council eighteen months ago. Cllr Martin will liaise with Cottsway Housing and the playgroup to ensure access.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING The date of the next meeting was agreed for 7.30pm on Thursday 3rd April 2014 in the village hall. There being no other business the meeting ended at 9.25pm.

The next screening at the Cinema in Cassington will be on Friday 11th April in the Village Hall, when we’ll be showing Saving Mr. Banks, starring two-time Academy Award winners Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks. Inspired by the extraordinary tale of how Mary Poppins was brought to the big screen, the film is poignant, sharply funny and moving. It recounts Walt Disney’s (Tom Hanks) quest to fulfil a promise to his daughters to make a film of their favourite book. Author P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson) has no intention of letting her beloved nanny go to Hollywood and Walt has to pull out all the stops to change her mind, and is ultimately forced to reach back into his own childhood to discover the truth about the ghosts that haunt the author. Together they set Mary Poppins free to become one of the most endearing films in cinematic history. Paul Giamatti, Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson and Jason Schwartzman round out the terrific cast.

‘Emma Thompson is superb as Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers as she tries to resist Walt Disney’s transformation of her famous creation’ –
