MCR President 2014-15 The MCR has had a very successful term so far, highlights include the internal Sunday Seminars and the outward- facing lecture series, which have both been popular and enlightening as usual, and the largest MCR-organised College event of the year – the Castle Charity Ball. This year’s theme was ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, and the Castle was decorated beautifully with (fake) snow and other Narnian accoutrements for a night of revelry as only a Castle ball can provide. Finally, the MCR is now taking a much greater role in the charitable side of College life, with members having organised an interesting and entertaining Ebola awareness evening earlier this term that raised over £1,700 for the charity Médecins Sans Frontières. It’s been a grand term all round! JCR Senior Man 2014-15 This last term has (as usual) been a highly busy one for the JCR. We have had several exciting events including a wonderful Marie Antoinette themed Halfway Hall ball and a great day in the sun for Castle Hatfield Day. University College has also been a strong leader in the student safety campaign this term with the introduction of our 'Keys, Wallet, Phone - Plan your way Home' campaign and the Castle Rangers late night volunteering scheme. We have also been through our election for next year’s executive committee and it is shaping up to be a great team that I'm sure will continue much of the great work done over the past few years. Professor David Held, Master Just before term started we had the first London reunion of the year and I was pleased to see many familiar faces, meet news ones, and hear a lot of post-Castle news. At events such as these I find the passion for Castle is incredibly strong. Whether they graduated five, ten, or fifty years ago, our alumni are keen to relive fond memories and give back to College in any way they can. This passion was also demonstrated by those who came to Castle and spoke to our current students at our first Castle Careers Fair in February. Due to it’s success among both alumni and students, we hope to repeat this initiative in the future. Commitment to the College is evident in many ways, and I would like to thank the numerous Castlemen who supported this year’s College Appeal for our hardship fund which, in the current economic climate, is becoming increasingly essential to students who find themselves in difficult, and often unforeseen circumstances. It is now more vital than ever that we are able to continue this support on all fronts to help fellow Castlemen and live up to the College motto, ‘non nobis solum’, not for ourselves alone. We look forward to continuing our links with our alumni and always welcome ideas or suggestions for keeping in touch and strengthening the Castle network. Winter Congregation 2015 We congratulate all of our new alumni who graduated in January this year.

Castle Charity Ball 2015 On 28th February the MCR hosted Castle’s second charity ball, organised by MCR Social Chair Lucy Haley. This was a great success and we welcomed back many alumni who reminisced over their time at the College and enjoyed a night of decadence inside the decorated White Witch’s Castle of Narnia.

Castle Community Action (CCA) The last few months have seen another wonderful term for Castle Community Action (CCA), Castle’s outreach society. Throughout the term, our volunteers have been working to make a difference, whilst placing the Castle back at the heart of the community. Particularly exciting projects have included the Homelessness Division’s Community Meal. Collecting leftover food from local businesses, CCA volunteers have hosted a vegetarian, three-course meal for the vulnerable and homeless members of the community in Sanctuary 21, and it has been hugely successful.

Just after Easter, we held a residential visit at Castle for secondary school students, and plans are also underway for CCA’s first ever Castle Community Day in June, where local families will be welcomed to the castle. Much of this has been made possible through donations from the Castle Society and alumni, and CCA is deeply grateful for your continued generosity.

If you have any questions, or want to know more about what we do, please don’t hesitate to contact Becca Doggwiler at [email protected] .

Alumni News: Sir Harold Evans Earlier in the year we heard from Former Editor of Palatinate, The Sunday Times, The Times, author and current Editor at large for Reuters, Sir Harold Evans (1949-52). Sir Harold has continued to highlight the plight of thalidomide victims which led to him writing an article for The Guardian exposing a judicial scandal, which in turn led The Globe and Mail in Toronto to initiate a campaign for the neglected Canadian victims.

London Reunion 30th January We would like to thank everyone who attended our first reunion of the year at the Counting House in January. There was an excellent turn out from a range of different years and it was great to see the Castle spirit still holding strong in the city. Keep an eye out for our next London reunion in the Summer.

College News: Sport This term has seen some great sport being played across the board, with some particularly exciting results for various teams. Congratulations to the Women’s Hockey who won the Cup Final against Grey and are currently coming 5th in the Premier League. Men’s Hockey had a great 2-1 win against Hild Bede in the Cup Competition but were later knocked out by St. Cuthbert’s in the Quarter Final. They are currently coming 3rd in the Premiership. Women’s Football also reached the Floodlit Final against Collingwood A, but after a close match lost 2-0.

Castle-Hatfield Day took place on 21st February, unfortunately Castle lost over all, but special mention must go to the Castle Rugby team who managed a strong defeat over the Hatfield team. Congratulations also go to the many Castlemen who represented Durham at the British Universities and College Sports competition and won in their sport.

Castle Careers Fair 2015 Our first careers fair took place in February and we welcomed back alumni from a range of different sectors: publishing, entrepreneurship, teacher training, accountancy and many others.

We greatly appreciate our participating alumni for taking the time out of their busy week to share their invaluable knowledge with current students. We hope to make this an annual event, so if you are interested in representing

your company at our next careers fair, we would love to hear from you! Drop us an email at [email protected].

You can also sign up to be a Castle Contact, offering careers advice to any students who get in touch with you throughout the year.

New Library Facilities Special thanks goes to Charles Cottam (1988-91) who has given back to the College so generously by funding new facilities for the Lowe Library. This has encouraged more students to use the new work spaces and created a great atmosphere to study in. Pictured below is the new plaque which marks his kind contribution.

Richard King Foundation Scholarship A brand new scholarship has been established thanks to a generous gift from the Richard King Foundation. The scholarship is available for the next three years for any postgraduate taught programme, and the successful applicant will become a member of University College. We are very grateful to Castle alumnus Richard King (1963-66) for this new opportunity and look forward to awarding the first Richard King Foundation Scholarship this July for the start of the next academic year 2015.

Thank you We really appreciate all our donors and want to thank them for their generosity and for making Castle what it is today. Click here to see what you have helped us achieve.

The Hardship Fund Our current focus is on increasing our hardship fund. If you wish to contribute to the College hardship fund to help current students who are struggling to obtain the necessary funds to continue their studies or fulfil academic requirements, you can do so here by writing ‘For hardship fund’ under additional information.

University College Durham Trust Scholarship We would like to thank our alumni for their generosity over the years which has enabled ‘The University College Durham Trust Scholarship’ to be set up in memory of Lt-Col Angus Alexander Macfarlane-Grieve, Master of University College from 1939-1953. The scholarship, starting in the next academic year 2015, will be part time over two years for an MA in Museum and Artefact Studies and will allow the recipient access to the College collections while undertaking their studies in order to improve the College as a museum and accessible heritage site.

Give Back to Castle If you are interested in giving back to the College community there are many ways that you can do so.

• Become a Castle Contact - we are always looking for alumni to offer careers advice to current students through our Castle Contacts scheme.

• Give a talk - come back to Castle and inspire current students by sharing knowledge of your career.

• Donate to Castle - by going to our donation page you can contribute a one off gift or make a pledge.

• Donate to a specific club or society - on our donation page you can always specify where you want your donation to go by writing this under ‘additional information’.
