The Red Lion

The open mic nights are back. You are all welcome to come and join in or just come and enjoy. Matt Evans is now running the show starting at 8 to 8.30pm and the next session is on Wednesday, 13th December. Due to demand, Tim Smith is singing at the Red Lion on New Year’s Eve starting at 9pm.

Castle Airgun Castle have started the season well, winning 4 of their first 5 matches with the

other match close. This puts Castle as I write 4th in the league although we

have the same points as 2nd & 3rd but slightly less average. Liam Williams

who lives in the village joined the team last season and with few matches shot has certainly made a good impact with some great results so early in his shoot-

ing life. We have been knocked out of one Cup competition but progressed

through into the next round of the Shrewsbury & Wem Cup beating close ri-vals Guilsfied B. It will be difficult to do better than 4th, our finishing position

for the last two years but if we can show the right form against the teams

above us, we are very capable of 3rd.

Camping in Castle Caereinion

In 1960, I went on a camping holiday to Castle Caereinion. My dad de-livered me and my camping kit in the van on a Sunday morning. I spent a week camping in a tent with a group of older grammar school boys from the Queen Mary’s grammar school in Walsall. I joined this group of young lads and we camped in the railway station yard. They were much older than me and one of team drove a van which they used to carry all their camping gear. The previous week they had been visiting some long closed quarry railways in North Wales.

We visited the Red Lion in the village on most nights and I had to site on the fireside bench with an orange juice. I sat away from the bar in case the bobbies paid a visit as I was under age. I recall Mr. Emberton was the landlord at this time. The first time I saw Dolarddyn Hall was in 1960. It was by then very dilapidated and unlived in. The story told in the pub was that a coach and horses was to visit Dolarddyn Hall on the next moonlit night, which was a harvest moon. We went to the hall and sat for hours outside the hall but there was no coach. I also remember walking back to the station looking up at the star filled star.

My father was a sub postmaster in the Midlands and I used to phone home from the red kiosk in the village. My father also sent me some money to the sub postmaster in the village, who I visited to collect my groceries. During our stay, we were visited by Captain Turner, who walked along the railway from his home to have a chat. I recall Mr. Jones, who lived in the bungalow opposite the railway yard. We used to pump the water from his well for washing and making tea. Two years before we camped, he had a steam traction engine in the station yard. The engine used to visit local farms to thresh clover seeds, which was grown locally in the 1920s to the 1940s. The engine was a Burrell 5HP named Haig. It has survived and is now residing near Kidwelly in Pem-brokshire. Towards the end of the week, it rained on and off for a few days and my tent sprung many leaks. I spend the last two days camp-ing in the signal box.

At the end of the week, I had to get back to Welshpool on the Crossville bus driven by Mr. Wiffin. I will remember the driver flinging rolled up newspapers out of the side window as we passed by various farms. These were happy days.

Advent Reflection by Alexis Smith

Serendipity

Serendipity means a "happy accident" or "pleasant surprise". Specifical-

ly, it refers to the accident of finding something good while not specifically searching for it.

I believe that God uses serendipity to help us know that he is present with us and to give us an unexpected moment of joy. Often this surprise aware-

ness of God’s presence comes through an everyday event. Yet, we only recog-

nize it for what it is if we believe that God can show up in the midst of our

busy lives and we cultivate a way of seeing that allows us to notice what others might overlook and understand its significance.

The western Christian church will begin Advent in two weeks. It is a season that speaks of joyous expectation. It leads up to Christmas when we re-

member Christ’s first coming and look for his future return.

However, it is also a time of much busyness. We enter a time of seasonal

activities that bring opportunities for laughter, love, and disappointment. We

expect much from these activities and sometimes find more anxiety than joy.

The rush and busyness distracts us from hearing and seeing God at work in our lives—as he is all the time. In our looking at all the sparkle and excitement of

the holidays we may forget that God’s great gift of deliverance and healing

came through something that appeared small and weak—a baby.

Joy, happiness, and a sense of God’s presence may come when we aren’t

expecting them—creeping up on us in an ordinary day. Sometimes the most important moments of our lives are the in-between times, between our meetings

and scheduled events, when we allow ourselves to be interrupted and arrested

by the sight, sound, smell, or touch of some small experience of life. In that

moment, we find joy and feel loved: a friend sends us an encouraging email; a bird’s song seems to be for us alone; we reconnect with someone we haven’t

seen in a long time; or we laugh along with a delighted child chasing bubbles.

Small moments of joy surprise us, stop us in our tracks, touch our hearts, and make us smile. These moments are treasures in our busy lives. These are God

speaking in the ordinary events of life.

Castle Gardening Club The gardening club had a good year with a Plant Auction in September raising

money for club funds. In October Bill Rowell gave an interesting talk titled Latin Names For Fun. November's meeting was about the Dyfi Osprey project and was

very interesting. We are looking forward to our annual buffet and quiz in

December.

In the new year, we will having our Christmas lunch on 3rd January at The

Dyffryn, Foel.

7th February is an amusing talk by Alwyn Hughes - Down Memory Lane

7th March is our AGM and, more importantly, it is the 25th anniversary of the Gardening Club. We will be having a buffet in the community hall.

4th April we have a talk by Pam Pittwood - A Host of Golden Daffodils.

Langford and Linda Pengelly.

Ivan’s Column The 1st, 2nd, 19th, 28th &29th September were sunny days. The 10th, 22nd & 30th

were miserable days. The rest were mixed dull days. Where is our Native

American Indian Summer?

Hurricane Maria was playful, but not too naughty. The whole of October was mixed, dull days apart from the 9th which was a lovely day. The Harvest Moon

arrived on the 6th which is the name of the first full moon that occurs nearest the

Autumn equinox. Its name derives from the fact that the farmers used to rely on the light to work late into the night collecting crops ahead of Winter.

On the 16th hurricane Ophelia blew up from the south brining sand from N.

Africa, which led to a bright red sun. On the 14th, 15th & 16th a murmuration of starlings swept round and round Castle Caereinion in a huge ball. It is unbeliev-

able that they all wheel around at the same time. Extraordinarily they arrived at

5:50 pm on the dot each day.

The 1st & 19th of Nov. were spring like days. There were some frosty mornings

and lots of dull damp days and windy days. Not the best of Autumns.

“Lavinia’s Get Together” was on the 13th of Sept. in the Red Lion. On the 22nd

the film “La La Land” starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was shown in

the community hall. “Lavinia’s Get Together” was on the 11th Oct. in the Red Lion. On the 20th the film “Wonder” starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine was

shown in the community hall. The 8th of Nov was “Lavinia’s Get Together” and

on the 17th the film “The Girls On The Train” starring Emily Blunt was shown

in the community Hall.

I was in Gobowen Orthopaedic Hospital from the 18th – 21st Oct. for a hip oper-

ation and have been housebound from the 21st of Oct. to the 21st of Nov. Janet and I would like to thank so many people form their kind thoughts and offers of

help. Castle Caereinion is a very friendly village. Long may it be so. Thanks

you all!

Here at Castle Caereinion School we are having a busy half term with the big lead up to Christmas!

Harvest Festival - we were delighted at the way in which our pupils carried

out their Harvest Festival Service in the Church on 3rd October, which was well attended. The following day the children delivered goods that had

been donated around the village with volunteers Mrs Eirlys Jones and Mrs

Christine Williams. We have had some lovely comments and messages from the Community for which we thank you very much.

We have been very fortunate due to funding from our excellent Friends of

the School to have Shrewsbury Town Football Club into school on a week-ly basis for six weeks with Class 2. They were taken through physical and

mental training sessions, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed, a very

worthwhile project for the school – so thank you Friends of the School.

All pupils have made their own personalised Christmas Cards, which then

went off for printing to enable school to sell them to parents – so hopefully

you may see some of these wonderful designs at Christmas time.

We have also taken part in the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Appeal, and

BBC Children In Need Appeal where we raised £66.00. Our Children In Need day was great fun, which at the end of the school day a Disco for all

was organised by the Friends of the School.

Next Thursday, the whole school will be spending the day at Berriew School, where a professional company are coming to put on a Panto for

both schools, in addition a craft session will take place. Again thanks to

our Friends of the School for funding towards this event.

Our Class 1 (Infants) will be holding their school performance of

“Christmas with the Aliens” on Thursday 14th December at 6.00 p.m., there will also be an afternoon performance on Tuesday 12th December at 2.00

p.m. at our coffee/tea afternoon.

Please do come along, all welcome.

Our Christingle Service will take place in the church on Tuesday 19th December at 2.30 p.m. again, we welcome you to attend.

We wish you a very Happy Christmas and Wonderful New Year

from all of us at Castle School.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We would like to let everyone know that The Friends of the School have

spent a lot of money on upgrading the playground to make it a fun place

for our pupils to play. However, we do need to ask that no one comes onto

the playground with a vehicle or parks on it unless it is absolutely neces-

sary. This is because the type of markings will not last if vehicles continue

to use it. Sincere thanks for complying with our request

CASTLE CAEREINION RECREATION ASSOCIATION Thank you to everyone who attended the concert in October with the two choirs and it was well attended with some wonderful singing. Please complete a 100 club application – this fund raising goes towards the ongoing maintenance of Castle community centre. If you would like to raise any concerns or issues to the Recreation Association, there is a 10 minute session at the start of every monthly meeting (held in the community centre on the second Tuesday of each month).

100 Club

To help raise money for the

Community Hall we will be run-

ning a 100 Club. This will com-

mence in January 2018 and the

monthly draw will take place at

the Recreation Committee

Meeting.
