OVERVIEW ANALYSIS

Direct conflict between the two natural opposing forces showing the actualization of the two camps

The breaking down of intellect and law and order at the same time spells doom for humanity.

SETTING AND MOOD

SETTING AND MOOD

Hopelessness in the mood “ashes scurried... No spark shone in them.” Shows how the extinguished flames take the

effect and add on to the mood of hopelessness

They have lost all means to get rescued

SETTING AND MOOD

Metaphor – Beach clean compared to a blade“The beach was swept clean like a blade that

has been scoured” Golding’s choice of words seem to

foreshadow the imminent death of Piggy

SETTING AND MOOD

Diction “a mass of twisted stems, black and green and

impenetrable” This adds on to the mood of the dangerous

attempt to talk to the savages Adds on to the mood to prepare the reader

for piggy’s death Foreshadows the failure in the attempt to

talk because it is “impenetrable”

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

RALPH

PIGGY

JACK

ROGER

THEMES

THEMES Savagery VS Civilization Savagery has taken over the island

[microcosm of society] Savagery consuming science and the

breakdown of law and order is literal when the boys have spears and painted faces

“stabbed at Ralph’s chest” Savagery rebelling against law and order

[was not apparent in last few chapters; mostly internal] but now it has manifest into physical action instead of psychological struggle

This is also a contrast to society when there are certain few that stand against the savagery.

SAVAGERY VS CIVILIZATION

The final conflict between the two elements psychologically when the savages lose everything to the savagery within themselves

This is the most evident within Roger when he throws stones at Ralph and samneric “aiming to miss”

However, this condition does not occur when he is taken over by savagery “with a sense of delirious abandonment”

MOB PSYCHOLOGY

This is the gradual loss of self and identity and slowly becoming a single entity if not losing the original identity

This is evident when there is no longer a sense of unique self and identity when the savages are just refered to as savages and boys as compared to the previous chapters when they still had names.

“they were a solid mass of menace” This is also evident in Jack as he loses his name

as “Jack” but establishes himself as Chief and no longer Jack as compared to the first chapter when even as he had the desire to hold chieftain, he was known by his name.

“I am Chief!”

SYMBOLISMS

THE CONCH

It represented law and order Breaking of the conch This shows that savagery has overtaken law

and order and the boys on the island deem law and order useless

“the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist”

Law and order also fails to protect and govern the science and technology that aids the boys

THE SIGNAL FIRE

Served to act as rescue Still brought hope to the boys in the chapter However was unable to be completely lit

because of the lack of the glasses

PIGGY’S GLASSES

Represented Science and Technology Misused by the hunters It was stolen by the hunters Destroyed all hopes of rescue because of its

inherent nature Double edged sword
