Giunto al diciottesimo “compleanno”, quello della maturità, Religion Today Filmfestival sceglie un tema forse fra i più delicati della sua storia: “Questioning God. Il dubbio e la fede”, ovvero le grandi domande che si fanno pressanti proprio nel faticoso passaggio dall’adolescenza all’età adulta. In un’epoca di grandi cambiamenti, segnata da una spaventosa crisi economica e dal pericolo del fondamentalismo, “Religion Today” ci aiuta a leggere il contesto in cui viviamo e ci offre gli strumenti per interpretarlo, richiamandoci all’impegno personale, al mettersi in gioco, all’aprirsi alla speranza, a farci testimoni e promotori dei valori del rispetto, della solidarietà, dell'accoglienza, della disponibilità al dialogo.Il guardare oltre e più in là, l'aprire nuove piste e nuovi percorsi, essere capaci di confrontarsi con la diversità, si confermano le caratteristiche principali di un evento che, muovendo dal dato puramente culturale, coltiva l'ambizione di fare incontrare religioni diverse, quindi diverse visioni dell'uomo, del mondo e di ciò che li trascende.Religion Today in particolare, è tanto più apprezzabile per come riesce a stimolare, attraverso quello straordinario strumento che è il cinema, la coscienza critica di ciascuno e a favorire la cultura dell’incontro e della pace.

Un’occasione che richiama alla consapevolezza e alla responsabilità di persone di ogni età e convinzione, per ricordarci che una delle principali sfide di oggi, soprattutto per i giovani, è la capacità di aprirsi al confronto e alla costruzione di relazioni positive tra esseri umani.Con i 55 film in concorso, le tante iniziative collegate e gli incontri con personalità di caratura internazionale, potremo esplorare i temi della convivenza tra fedi ed etnie diverse, cercando una risposta, per quanto possibile, alle grandi domande che ci accompagnano fino dalla nostra adolescenza.Questa nuova edizione conferma, dunque, tutto il valore di una proposta ormai consolidata nel panorama degli eventi culturali trentini, ma al tempo stesso sempre capace di rinnovarsi e di offrire nuovi spunti di discussione, sia sul piano cinematografico che su quello del dialogo interreligioso.

For its eighteenth “birthday” or coming of age, Religion Today Filmfestival has chosen possibly one of the most delicate topics of its history: “Questioning God. Doubt and Faith”, encompassing the big questions that start to become more important in the passage between adolescence and adulthood. In a time of great change, marked by a terrible financial crisis and the danger of fundamentalism, “Religion Today” can help us read the context in which we live and offers us the tools needed to interpret it, reminding us to make a personal commitment, take challenges, open ourselves up to hope and make ourselves witnesses and promoters of the values of respect, solidarity, hospitality and availability to talk.Looking further into the future, opening new pathways and being able to discuss diversity, prove to be the main characteristics of an event which, starting from cultural factors, nurtures the desire to meet with different religions, and therefore different visions of Man, of the world and of all that comes from it.Religion Today, in particular, is a lot more appreciated for how it succeeds in stimulating everyone’s critical consciences and in promoting a culture of sharing and of peace through the extraordinary tool that is the cinema. An opportunity which recalls the

knowledge and responsibility of people of all ages and beliefs, to remind us that one of the main challenges of today, especially for young people, is the capacity to open ourselves up to the comparison and construction of relationships between human beings.Through the 55 films in the competition, the many related initiatives and the meetings with international personalities, we will be able to explore the themes of living amongst different faiths and ethnicities and searching for answers, as far as possible, to the big questions which accompany us from our adolescence.This new edition therefore confirms all of the value of a proposal now consolidated in the landscape of Trento cultural events, but at the same time still with the capacity to renew itself and to offer new discussion-starting topics, both in terms of cinema and in terms inter-religious dialogue.

Religion Today compie 18 anni.Un traguardo raggiunto passo dopo passo, tra visioni, entusiasmi, spinte e ripensamenti, non senza difficoltà e “crisi di crescenza”, in cordate generose con vecchi e nuovi compagni di strada, cercando sempre di restare sintonizzati con i cambiamenti radicali di un mondo in cui la sfida raccolta dal Festival - valorizzare le differenze, dentro e fuori la sala di proiezione - diventa ogni giorno più urgente. Ecco allora che il titolo scelto per questa 18a edizione - Questioning God. Il dubbio e la fede - rende omaggio alle grandi domande che si fanno più pressanti proprio nel faticoso passaggio dall’adolescenza all’età adulta. Ma tornare su questa dialettica antica quanto il pensiero è anche l’occasione per rilanciare il confronto tra credenti e altrimenti credenti, credenti e non credenti, laici deboli e laici forti, attraversando senza posizioni preconcette la mappa della diversità. Da un lato, dunque, la fede come scelta, ricerca, impegno, ponte gettato sul “mare infinito dell’incertezza”; dall’altro il dubbio come linfa vitale che, in accordo con la saggezza spirituale comune alle diverse tradizioni religiose, impregna la fede e la mantiene viva, lontano dalle terribili certezze dei fondamentalismi che ancora una volta lacerano le nostre società travagliate da trasformazioni repentine e sconvolgenti.

Tra questi poli si muovono i 55 film in concorso, giunti da 27 paesi del mondo e mai così vari per storie, stili, orizzonti culturali, con una nuova sezione dedicata ai migranti e un ricco ventaglio di produzioni “Far East”, mentre continua il percorso che lega cinema, religioni, pace, diritti umani, relazioni di genere. Particolarmente numerosi anche gli ospiti, gli incontri, le attività per le scuole, le partnership, le “contaminazioni” e gli eventi speciali in programma nelle varie sedi del Festival, a cominciare dalla serata inaugurale che porterà a Trento la musica e l’impegno di pace della cantante araba israeliana Mira Awad. Dal 9 al 19 ottobre, e ancora nel mese di novembre 2015, Religion Today proseguirà dunque con convinzione il proprio “viaggio nelle differenze”, in Trentino, a Merano, a Roma e Nomadelfia, moltiplicando le occasioni di confronto e di scambio da sempre al cuore di un progetto nato anche come “laboratorio di convivenza”.Le 18 candeline del Festival, infine, ispirano un convegno internazionale inteso ad approfondire il rapporto tra cinema, immaginario, pluralità, alterità culturale e religiosa. La cornice per uno scambio di buone pratiche e, per il Festival, un altro momento di consapevolezza, di crescita, di maturazione, di responsabilità.Religion Today diventa “grande”.Buon compleanno!

Religion Today has its 18th birthday.Reaching a goal step after step, between visions, enthusiasm, steps forward and steps backwards, not without difficulty and “growth crisis”, with the kind help of old and new fellow travellers, always trying to stay in harmony with the radi-cal changes of a world, where the challenge proposed by the festival – make the most of differences, inside and outside of the projection room – is becoming more urgent every day.This is how the title chosen for this 18th edition - Questioning God. Doubt and Faith – pays homage to the big questions that become more and more important in the passage between adolescence and adult-hood. But turning to this antique dialectic is also an opportunity to relaunch comparison between believers of one faith and believers of another, believers and non-be-lievers, crossing the map of diversity without preconceived positions.On the one hand, therefore, faith in terms of a choice, research, com-mitment, a bridge throwing itself onto the “infinite sea of uncertainty”; on the other hand, doubt in terms of lifeblood which, in agreement with spiritual wisdom common to all the different religious traditions, fills us with faith and keeps it alive, far from the terrible certainties of fundamen-talism which will rip our troubled society apart by unexpected and disturbing transformations.The 55 films of this competition move between these poles, linked to

27 countries in the world and never before so varied in their stories, styles, cultural horizons, with a new section dedicated to migrants and a rich variety of “Far East” produc-tions, whilst the path which links cinema, religions, peace, human rights and relationship continues.The guests, meetings, activities for schools, partnerships, “con-taminations” and special events on schedule at the various venues of the Festival are numerous, starting from the opening evening which will bring the music and the peace commitment of Israeli Arab singer Mira Awad to Trento. From the 9th to the 19th of October, and again in the month of November 2015, Religion Today will therefore continue with conviction on its own ”journey through differences”, in the Trentino region, Merano, Rome and the Nomadelfia community, multiply-ing the comparison and exchange opportunities always at the heart of a project created also as a “living together workshop”.The 18 candles of the festival inspire an international conference intended to deepen the relationship between cinema, cultural and reli-gious otherness. The background of an exchange of good practices and, for the festival, another moment of knowledge, growth, maturity and responsibility.Religion Today is becoming “big”.Happy birthday!

Un percorso nella “diversità” come cifra del nostro tempo nel suo rapporto con il cinema, davanti e dietro la macchina da presa. Nel 18° “compleanno” di Religion Today, il convegno intende rilanciare, sia nei suoi aspetti teorici, sia attraverso lo scambio di buone pratiche, l’idea del “viaggio nelle differenze” da sempre al cuore del Festival, mettendo a fuoco la relazione tra cinema, comprensione e rappresentazione dell’alterità nelle nostre società plurali ed interconnesse. Storici e scienziati sociali si confronteranno con filmaker, distributori, organizza-tori e studiosi del cinema e dell’au-diovisivo per tracciare una rotta sulla mappa complessa e mutevole delle identità contemporanee.

An exploration of a symbol of our times, “diversity”, and its relationship with cinema, both in front and behind the camera. For its 18th birthday, Religion Today organizes a conference to investigate - in its theoretical and practical aspects - the idea of “exploring the differences”, at the basis of the Festival, focusing on the relationship between cinema, the understanding and the representation of alterity in our plural and interconnected societies. Historians and social scientists will debate and interact with filmmakers, festival directors and cinema professionals about the changing and multifarious nature of contemporary identities.

Reza Bahraminezad, Iran, è regista, produt-tore, critico cinema-tografico, art director. Nel 2011 ha fondato una propria attività, il

Bahrami Studio, il cui obiettivo è la creazione e gestione di progetti innovativi in grado di combinare l’espressione artistica con diversi media. Tema centrale della sua produzione è la relazione tra cultura, arte, vita quotidiana, società.

Reza Bahraminezad is an Iranian filmmaker, film producer, critic, and art director. In 2011 he founded his own studio, the “Bahrami Studio”, where he runs and manages diverse and innovative projects, aiming to combine art with different media. The main theme is the relation among culture, art, people’s daily life, and the humans’ society.

Serge Goriely è un cineasta, drammaturgo e ricercatore belga. Ingegnere gestionale e dottore di ricerca in filosofia e lettere,

Goriely è docente presso l’Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL). La sua

produzione accademica indaga il rapporto tra cultura e religione, con particolare attenzione alla rappre-sentazione della spiritualità nel cinema. Ha diretto il festival Cinespi (Cinéastes et spiritualité) a Lovanio.

Serge Goriely is a Belgian film-maker, playwriter and researcher. Holder of a degree in Management Engineering and a PhD in Literature and Philosophy, he is a teaching professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL). His academic pro-duction investigates the relationship between culture and religion, with particular attention to the represen-tation of spirituality in cinema. He directed the Cinespi (Cinéastes et spiritualité) Festival in Louvain.

Abdul-Rehman Ma-lik è giornalista, edu-catore, organizzatore. Attualmente a Londra, è direttore dell’Insight Film Festival, che celebra l’intersezione

actress and film director. She has lived for seven years in Argentina, where she attended ENERC, the National School of Cinematographic Experimentation and Direction in Buenos Aires. She collaborated as writer and producer with the MTV Latin America channel. In 2014, in tribute to her father, she established the Rodrigo Morales Foundation for the Arts; she is also the director of the FICFUSA Women Film Festival.

Ariela Piattelli, nata a Roma, è giornalista e codirettrice del Piti-gliani Kolno’a Festival di Roma, organizzato dal Centro Ebraico Il Pitigliani: l’unico festival italiano dedica-

to alla cinematografia israeliana e di argomento ebraico. Organizza eventi culturali tra Israele e l’Italia, tra cui il Festival Internazionale di Letteratura Ebraica e La Notte della Cabbalà.

Ariela Piattelli, born in Rome, is a journalist and the co-director of Pitigliani Kolno’a Rome Film Festival, organized by The Pitigliani Jewish Center: this is the only Ital-ian festival dedicated to Jewish and Israeli films. She organizes cultural events aimed at building a bridge between Israel and Italy, including the International Festival of Jewish Literature and The Night of the Kabbalah.

Abdul-Rehman Malik is an award winning London-based journalist, educator and organiser. He is also the director of the Insight Film Festi-val, which celebrates the intersec-tion between faith and cinema, and the current programs manager of the Radical Middle Way. His work has spanned the UK, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sudan, Mali, Morocco, Singapore, Canada and Malaysia. He is involved in the establishment of a global network committed to supporting the development of cutting-edge Muslim culture.

Italy at night seen from a gas station: an impartial meeting-point where Jamal and Rashid, who stand in for the official gas station attendant, encounter people from all walks of life. They spend their lonely nights waiting for customers to come fill up their tanks, while reading, from newspapers left by daily customers, unrealistic sex ads or financial news which to them, coming from a complex culture and different world, sound rather absurd. Un architetto di Rovereto si adopera perché possa essere realizzata una chiesa in legno a Rovereto sul Secchia, all’indomani del terremoto del maggio 2012. 14 artisti trentini dell’Ucai la arricchiscono con le stazioni della Via Crucis, tradotte in vetro in un laboratorio di Bolzano. Il lungo lavoro di gruppo, tra solidarietà e creatività artistica, li unisce nel trasmettere una luce di speranza, pur nella consapevolezza di non poter togliere il peso di un dramma individuale e sociale ancora molto presente.

An architect of Rovereto designs a wooden church in Rovereto sul Secchia, in the aftermath of the earthquake in May 2012. 14 artists from the Trentino region enrich it with the Stations of the Cross, with the help of a glass laboratory in Bolzano. The long teamwork, between solidarity and artistic creativity, unites them in transmitting a light of hope, even in the knowledge that they cannot take the weight of an individual and social drama which is still there.

In early 2013 Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza arrives in predominantly Palestinian East Jerusalem for an unprecedented project. Following his lifelong dream to record songs with musicians from Palestine and Israel, Broza begins an eight-day session in the studio of Sabreen - the legendary Palestinian band. During the recordings, the musicians find opportunities to share their life stories and learn surprising truths about one another. A story of musical bridge building offering an alternative to the decade-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ogni anno circa 200.000 persone provenienti da oltre cento nazioni percorrono a piedi il lungo percorso di 800 km verso Santiago de Compostela. Per molti è un’esperienza che trasforma la vita, un viaggio come nessun altro. Anche Gian D. Ceccato, un ingegnere in pensione della Ontario Power Generation, nel mese di agosto 2012, a 71 anni, parte a piedi da Saint Jean Pied de Port (FR), vicino al confine con la Spagna, per raggiungere il Santuario di Santiago de Compostela e la tomba dell’apostolo Giacomo.Each year nearly 200,000 people from more than a hundred nations walk along the 800 kilometers journey of Santiago de Compostela. For many this is a life-changing experience, a journey like no other. The documentary tells the story of Gian D. Ceccato, a retired engineer of Ontario Power Generation. In August 2012, aged 71, he left, on foot, from Saint Jean-Pied de Port (FR) near the Spanish border, heading to the Shrine of Santiago de Compostela, tomb of the apostle James.

propria umanità in italiano, tamil, swahili… Un esempio concreto di integrazione e di incontro tra “migranti” e “autoctoni” diverso da quello proposto dai media, al di là dei luoghi comuni polarizzanti e criminalizzanti: un atto semplice, umano, nel quale un uomo è uguale a una voce.In Bambara language, in Burkina Faso, the term Kandia, consisting of the words Kan (voice) and Dia (beauty), means “beautiful voice”, but also “the beauty that the voice produces”. In the heart of Lecce, in Puglia, a chorus of voices sing their own humanity. The choir is composed of four specialised male voices, and they perform the latin Miserere and Stabat Mater. The four elderly singers have been careful to pass on to their sons this patrimony, which miraculously survived the centuries thorugh oral tradition. The film presents these two generations of singers intensely performing and participating in the Easter Triduum.

She is a Holocaust survivor and the mother of Sonia. Together they look back, revitalizing their relationship and emboldening them to also look ahead. Accompanied by a music therapist, Regina sings Yiddish and French songs of her youth with her daughter Sonia at every session. The past they were so eager to forget, they are now anxious to remember. And while Regina’s memory is rapidly succumbing to dementia, the mother-daughter bond of melody and memory remains strong.
