The Best of ClareTaylors Jaraman Clare Valley ShirazBig changes at Taylors are bringing great results. A decade or so ago they pushed a broom through Taylors with new winemakers arriving, new equipment purchased and big changes in the vineyards. And guess what, the wine quality has bounced ahead and this shows up at wine judging shows, locally and overseas as they now win lots of ‘booty’. This is good news for consumers as you can safely buy good wines at fair prices and not be disappointed. Shiraz is what the Clare does well, and what you will get is a full, rich, flavour tending on the big side. The price is $22.99 per bottle or $275.88 when you buy a dozen.

Traditional Family ValueTyrrells Rufus Stone Heathcote Shiraz From the first release - what a decade ago this wine has offered sensational value. In our view old family wineries stick to offering customers traditional, fair value. No glamour, no hype just good family value. Admittedly a great vineyard, now maturing, in Heathcote also helps. The best will in the world is not much good if the grapes are average. Many, many excellent wines are now coming from the Heathcote region of Central Victoria. Some say the quality is due to the rare red soils, though whatever the reason it is very easy for us to endorse this rich, full flavoured and deeply satisfying wine. The price is $15.99 per bottle or $203.88 when you buy a dozen.

Fairly Priced and DeliciousRedbank Emily Brut Cuvee NV We have been pondering this wine on and off for a few years wondering if we should draw your attention to it. Consumers are very cautious about changing sparkling wine brands so we wanted to be certain before we recommended the ‘Emily’. We think we will as this wine delivers exceptional flavours at a very fair price. After all that should be the basis of most recommendations. The varieties of chardonnay and pinot noir are traditional and get a tick; the source is the cool to cold King Valley and Yarra Valley, regions that make delicate wines so this gets another tick; the flavour is lovely with soft creamy textures and a crisp refreshing finish so another tick; and lastly it is cheap, so it gets four ticks which means Emily is recommended..The price is $10.99 per bottle or $131.88 when you buy a dozen.

A Big Bold BarossaSaltram Pepperjack Barossa Shiraz This wine delivers what you want when you taste a Barossa red. Firstly lots of flavour; then power and body; and these wrap around the Barossa fruit intensity which produces the impression of a plummy ripe ‘sweetness’ that is unique in world flavour expression. Shiraz is grown in most of the world’s great wine regions but none display what has made the Barossa famous. Barossa shiraz we might remind you is by far the largest component in Penfolds Grange each vintage. None of this William Salter knew when he settled at Mamre Brook in the Barossa in 1859. Indeed the uniqueness of the red wine flavours of the Barossa, arguably had to await the genius of Max Schubert, who unlocked the flavour profiles in the 1950s with a range of amazing Barossa based reds for Penfolds. The price is $19.99 per bottle or $239.88 when you buy a dozen.

Over Deliver’s and that Job Is Never DoneJacobs Creek Reserve ShirazWe were around when this Reserve range of Jacobs was launched and observed with others that it followed the successful launch technique of over delivering on quality. Trouble for the competitors is that it continues to over deliver and the price has not moved. The Trophy and two gold’s testify that our show judges also agree. This wine may come from a vast company, but that gives a great benefit, they can choose from a great resource to make the small volumes for this reserve range. Great wine, fair price and is a must. The price is $12.99 per bottle or $155.88 when you buy a dozen.

A Pleasure at AnytimeMumm Cordon Rouge NV We are offering a good price on this great Champagne brand. In most cases the French product is still better than what we make in Australia. We do make several wines which are as good and perhaps are better though they cost as much or more than the French so there are no savings. So once you have checked out the price and decided which brand you want the major query you have left is to find out if the stock is fresh or old. In a warm country such as ours delicate wines like French Champagne suffer rapidly with heat. That is why we always recommend well known brands as their great advantage is that the stock turns over quickly. There are some fabulous boutique Champagnes being made some of which come to Australia but unless you are a wine ‘geek’ stay well away from them. When hard earned dollars are at stake stick with the tried and true - stick with Mumm. The price is $55.99 per bottle or $671.88 when you buy a dozen.

A Range of Rich Reds & Sparkling wines

Trophy and Three Golds

Brands Laira Foundation Coonawarra Cabernet

Merlot This is a fabulous wine with a fast developing show record to confirm

its greatness. Great wines have been produced from Coonawarra

since the 1940s with the Woodley's Treasure Series and this gained

impetus with the revival of the old John Riddoch cellars by Wynns in

1953. The reputation has grown ever since. With that said so many

new regions have dazzled us with brilliant offerings that Coonawarra

has had a lot of trouble being 'heard'. This means for consumers that

many of the wines are now underpriced for the wine quality offered.

The concept of value with wine is a difficult one but when you have

a fine old firm like Brands, very good vineyard locations and good

winemaking and the wine is reasonably priced you most definitely

have value. Strongly recommended by Down Under.

Delicious Fresh BargainAmberley Secret Lane Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon BlancOh what a joy these wines are to drink. The wonders of WA cool climate semillon marry beautifully with sauvignon blanc from the same region. Every winery in W.A. now produces an example. Australia has a long history with semillon and a short history with sauvignon blanc. Semillon is associated with some interesting styles of wine from the warm to hot regions of the Hunter Valley and the Barossa Valley so it is a most versatile grape. It is also grown in cool regions but it seems that it develops its best flavours in the cool climate of south western WA. Marry the sappy, fresh flavours of the semillon with cool climate sauvignon blanc and magic happens. A fine everyday drink. The price is $13.99 per bottle or $167.88 when you buy a dozen.

Finest Margaret RiverWatershed Margaret River Shades Sauvignon Blanc SemillonThe Watershed winery is right in the dress circle of Margaret River not far from the famous Cape Mentelle and Leeuwin Estate and just south of the town of Margaret River. It is also a five star rated winery by our top wine writer James Halliday. So with the scene set we can now affirm that this Shades Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is just wonderful and in our view better than the two bronze medals it has been awarded. If you like sauvignon blanc we recommend you buy from the following three regions, Marlborough (NZ), Margaret River or Adelaide Hills. The wines are quite similar as you would expect as they are made to express the fruit with no winemaking tricks. And so you know we are on the ball we visited this winery in November, 2008 and met the winemaker Severine Logan and she is a champion. The price is $14.99 per bottle or $179.88 when you buy a dozen.

The Best of the Golden WestCape Geographe Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2010 This is a most beautiful wine from Margaret River which represents the best of the Golden West. The two classical varieties, semillon and sauvignon blanc, are combined in a way that enhances both and whatever the mysterious alchemy is that leads to great grape and then wine flavours this combination delivers a near perfect score. The winemaker is Mark Warren, a 20 year Margaret River veteran who is the Chief Winemaker at Happs. Happs do a lot of private work for other wineries and growers who make small amounts of wine which has given Mark, over this long period, exposure to a huge number of vineyards. Cape Geographe is a private venture with the first release being the 2009. For the 2010 he selected grapes from a single vineyard and made 500 cases. The price is $11.99 per bottle or $143.88 when you buy a dozen.

Good Price on Home Town FavouriteOyster Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Oyster Bay leads the parade of New Zealand sauvignon blancs from Marlborough as it is the most popular of the myriad brands that come to Australia. Everyone it seems loves the Oyster. The company that makes the wine has a long and distinguished history, indeed Oyster Bay was created back in 1990 though only from 2003 did they make enough to ‘invade’ the Australian market. We can be pleased they did as following on have been dozens of similar wines which provide plenty of competition. At Down Under we love them all and over the last year have found a few dozen that we thought you would enjoy. The Oyster though reigns supreme. The price is $15.99 per bottle or $191.88 when you buy a dozen.

A Winemaking TriumphLight & Finniss Barossa Valley Semillon This Barossa white is our best discovery for the month. What a sensational wine and what a delight to bring it to you. The Barossa Valley is famed for its rich reds but also has a few other joys to offer, one of which comes off old dry grown semillon vines. It is often said about wine that it’s made in the vineyard but this is a broad, sweeping generalisation. Barossa semillon is a variety that needs the hand of a master craftsman back at the winery. The best, and with a large cupboard full of Trophies and Golds for proof, is Christa Binder-Deans at the Veritas winery in the Barossa Valley. Christa took grapes from the Riebke brother’s property in the northern Barossa in the cool of the early morning, extracted about 600 litres from each tonne of grapes, and sent the juice to settle before fermentation. The key is the low extraction rate as this leaves behind all the coarse elements which give white wine a tough taste. The result is beautiful; being bottled in May, 2011 with 500 cases made. The price is $7.99 per bottle or $95.88 when you buy a dozen.

The Chardonnay Revival Gathers PaceDevils Lair Fifth Leg Margaret River ChardonnayWhat a delicious drink this Fifth Leg turned out to be. We are well aware that our customers have a strong liking for the fresh, vibrant tastes that are associated with the semillon and sauvignon blanc varieties. Yet chardonnay grown in the same climatic regions that make the sauvignon blanc semillon blends so delicious also markedly alters the flavour profile of chardonnay. If the winemakers stay away from using oak, and other fancy, and often intrusive techniques very similar, fresh vibrant flavours are also apparent. We also find these chardonnays have greater appeal than the sauvignon style. Here is what James Halliday, the noted wine writer says about this Fifth Leg: “Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition, Tightly wound with nectarine and grapefruit coming to the fore; the acidity is very high and certainly at the crisp end, resulting in a finish that is distinctly lemony; super on a hot day.” Its sounds delicious and it is. When you see this sign it will alert you to a wine that has been created by a ‘master blender’ or winemaker. The three elements of wine are the vineyard, the winery and the winemaker. Many of the wines we buy are created by industry greats who now have legendary status. For example, we buy many wines from Tim Knappstein, who began making wine in 1966. That is an awful long time ago and we want to sell wines made by the best.

Value from the MasterWolf Blass Red Label Chardonnay Of all the alcoholic drinks that man has invented the one with the most mystery, and we argue, delivers the greatest satisfaction, year in year out, is wine. Someone got it right about 10,000 years ago. So it is natural to follow this long drinking tradition but alas over this time the idea of a simple container of red or white has proliferated into tens of thousands of choices. When you walk into a shop and are faced with a wall of bottles how should you react? Stick to the form guide is one idea which means buying the familiar when it is offered at a good price. With this wine you have the familiarity of a great brand, a well know flavour in chardonnay and a very good price. As the saying goes; all the ducks are in a row! The price is $8.99 per bottle or $107.88 when you buy a dozen.

Sensational Price on New ZealandLobster Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc It may seem hard now to believe that the taste we take for granted, Marlborough sauvignon blanc, has a very recent history. Prior to 2000 it was of course available in Australia but was enjoyed by few and sales spluttered along. Now it is our most popular white variety and dozens of beautiful wines arrive every month from Marlborough, New Zealand. We liked what we call the price to quality ratio of this wine as it provides easy, agreeable drinking at a modest price. We fail to see why you should pay $5.00 to $7.00 more just because the brand seems more familiar. Go back to the start of this story and reflect again on the fact that none of these wines were around 9 years ago. The price is $9.99 per bottle or $119.88 when you buy a dozen.

New Tim Knappstein WineKnotts The Custodian Adelaide Hills Pinot GrisWe like the taste of pinot gris and it took almost no time to include this beautiful Tim Knappstein Knotts wine. Recall that Tim began work at the family owned Clare Valley, Stanley Wine Company in 1964, and we wonder if any other wine maker has been awarded so many show medals. We suppose you reach a point where counting seems pretty pointless with the main thing being to keep up the flow, vintage after vintage of sensational wines. Pinot gris though is relatively new to Australia with interest in this European variety being younger than 10 years. Knappstein told us that he makes it clean, fresh and unadulterated just as he does with his sensational sauvignons. The price is $9.99 per bottle or $119.88 when you buy a dozen.

Early Pioneer of this VarietyYalumba Y Sauvignon BlancWe continue our recommendation of the ‘Y’ wines and this is a must for our Best Value Reds & Whites Und'r $10.00. Let us tell you why. Well it goes back a long way but we recall in the mid 1980’s Yalumba released a sauvignon blanc under the Oxford Landing range which was highly acclaimed in our Wine Shows, indeed it was awarded a Trophy. At the time, because the wine was so cheap this created a sensation and the first wave of consumers moved to try this startling new taste. So Yalumba know a thing or two about making, tasty and affordable ‘savvies’. So what can we say but give this lovely wine a try.The price is $11.99 per bottle or $143.88 when you buy a dozen.

When you see this symbol it will alert you to a wine that has been made by traditional, time honoured, wine making techniques. The three elements of wine are the vineyard, the winery and the winemaker. We do try to buy wines that reflect traditional methods as we feel they often have a greater depth of flavours. Alas the traditional way means the wines are usually quite expensive so this symbol will not appear very often. When it does appear next to a wine it means that wine is worthy of your careful appraisal.

Rich Clare Valley CabernetKirrihill Clare Valley Cabernet SauvignonIf your taste is for a rich, ripe full flavoured red, well this is the wine for you. There is unusual topography in the Clare Valley with parallel ridges and valleys and nested along the valleys and up the slopes are the vineyards. This unusual ridge and valley though is on an upland plain and it is this height and exposure to breezes coming up the Gulf St Vincent that keep the vineyards cool. A look at a map would suggest it to be very hot as it is well north of Adelaide. So in brief the Clare Valley is a most unusual setting for a great wine region. The reds have over the last 15 years received wide acclaim in the U.S. with the best getting scores of 95+/100. This has given the growers and makers a real boost to drive quality higher. This offering from Kirrihill will give you a good taste of the best of Clare at a more reasonable price and offers good value to Down Under customers. The price is $11.99 per bottle or $143.88 when you buy a dozen.

227 Awards over 10 YearsWyndham Estate Bin 555 ShirazThis shiraz frequently wins multiple medals in our wine shows: to date 227 awards including 4 trophies, 36 golds, and 77 silvers. Like a good race horse it shows lots of form vintage to vintage. Wines like this display a steady quality, perhaps they lack the glamour of all the new entrants that entice us, but parting with your hard earned dollars is a serious business. We cannot see how any objective drinker (and thinker) could argue that this wine is not worth the price - because it is. For this reason we make it this month’s Best Value Reds and Whites Und’r round-up for this month. We might add it is a very worthy recipient as it s got the lot with quality and price. The price is $9.99 per bottle or $119.88 when you buy a dozen.

Trophy Winner Brisbane ShowRosemount Diamond Label ShirazWhat a terrific show result for this shiraz at the Royal Queensland Wine Show, Brisbane 2011 in being awarded the Ian Thornquest Trophy and Gold medal in Commercial Classes 54 to 62. We sift through dozens of wines every month looking for those with an extra 'something' which are worth presenting to you in our Best Buys Und'r series. Some feature which lifts the wine above the pack and gives you confidence that it is worth some of your hard earned dollars. We have great respect for our show judging system and take note of the results as they do have weight. So the Trophy becomes the 'clincher' this month for our recommendation. Let the last word be the winemaker; Matt Koch, Chief Winemaker Rosemount is thrilled with the results: “This is an excellent start to the national wine show circuit for Rosemount. Five gold medals and the Ian Thornquest Trophy highlight the diversity of red wine styles at Rosemount and is testament to the dedication of our winemaking team. We’re looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”The price is $10.99 per bottle or $131.88 when you buy a dozen.

Lowest Price for Years!Rymill “The Yearling” Coonawarra ShirazWe cannot recall ever seeing the famous Coonawarra reds from Rymill at such a low price. The Rymill family have a long history in Coonawarra and with extensive property it was natural to plant vines which began in 1974 leading to a winery in 1990. The extensive vineyards are favourably located at the northern end of the thin linear strip of terra-rossa soils. We can assure all buyers that this wine is of very high quality and why it was offered to us at such a low price we can only speculate about. From your perspective we urge you to grab the opportunity and buy a case as deals such as this, where the quality is high and the price very low are uncommon. The times are very good for wine buyers. While there are cheaper reds, and many are good, perhaps it’s worth spending a few dollars more for a much better taste. Down Under feels fortunate to be able to offer such stunning quality as this Rymill. The price is $10.99 per bottle or $131.88 when you buy a dozen.

McLaren Vale Pioneers Return to Business

Hopcroft & Cornock McLaren Vale Shiraz

This is a magical wine sourced from a vineyard that borders Seaview

Road. Like any vineyard region McLaren Vale covers quite a large area

and within that area various growers and winemakers will argue that

some particular areas make more satisfying wines than other areas.

We purchased this wine because it comes from the very old, original

part of McLaren Vale which is termed the Golden Mile. This strip of

vineyards is along the northern fringe of McLaren Vale and is traversed

by Seaview Road. This shiraz was made using time honoured methods

which have not changed for 120 years, with the grapes being hand

plunged in open vats which after fermentation were basket pressed.

Barrel maturation followed and the result is a magnificent and true

expression of McLaren Vale shiraz, a variety first planted in 1840. With

the Hopcroft and Cornock you can drink great wine and think of this

long history all at the one time.

Best Sparkling ValueYellow NV Sparkling A sparkling budget favourite of ours and for a great number of wine drinkers. Years ago we spent a day talking to the winemaker of the Yellowglen range, Charles Hargraves, and came away with our heads spinning with details about making the perfect sparkling wine. Like us, you will be impressed by the attention to minute detail that is needed to make a satisfying taste. This in turn made us recall that the Yellowglen brand was created by Ian Home back in the 1970’s. Ian had sold his supermarkets and was looking for the next business adventure and made the brave decision to create a sparkling wine. He survived and indeed Yellowglen prospered so let us toast this enterprise. The price is $9.99 per bottle or $119.88 when you buy a dozen.

Fresh and FruityBrown Brothers Sparkling MoscatoNew into Down Under is this creation from the masters of 'Fresh and Fruity'-Brown Bros. One of the greatest writers about wine, H. Warner Allen in his book ‘A Contemplation of Wine’ had this to say about Moscato. Allen was climbing in the Italian Alps and had buried a Moscato in a surviving patch of snow. “I can still see the rock, like a lion couchant, which just below the Madonna della Guardia throws into shadow a patch of snow, where the bottle can be buried in cold white refreshment, while the rest of the climb is accomplished in the swiftly-increasing warmth of the spring sun. Thence one could plunge head-long back to the enjoyment of that gay little wine, with its faint sparkle like a young Moselle and its sweetness corrected by a touch of acidity, and feel as ones thirst quenched, that all was for the best in the best of all possible worlds.” If you can experience this pleasure for such little money you are getting a good deal. The price is $12.99 per bottle or $155.88 when you buy a dozen.

A Taste of FrancePierlant Brut Non Vintage Cuvee (France) We have been selling Pierlant for over a decade and the reason is simple; the wine offers tempting flavours at a bargain price. The wine looks smart and tastes smart. The French of course have a very long history with the making of sparkling wines. One of our favourite quotes is this from 1758 by an Englishman Sir Edward Barry: “....the ‘depraved taste’ for ‘sparkling, frothy Champagne’ was a fashion that would not last and that the wine drinker of discernment would always prefer the still wine of Sillery”[sillery was a still wine from Champagne]. Now that was a bad marketing call. The price is $6.99 per bottle or $83.88 when you buy a dozen.

Brilliant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc DEAL!*Renwicks Adelines Choice Marlborough Sauvignon BlancChoosing which wine to buy is really very simple - always purchase good wines when they are on special. If your budget allows, buy what you can afford. We believe this is an excellent Marlborough sauvignon blanc. We think you should take the opportunity to buy several or many bottles. What a glory Marlborough sauvignon blanc has turned out to be over the last few decades; beautiful, tasty wines that are attuned to the Australian outdoor lifestyle. The correct flavours though only develop in cool to cold regions such as New Zealand. This Renwicks offers the correct flavours and is most modestly priced, plus our buy 6 and get 2 free offer is simply outstanding.Purchase for only $9.99 a single bottle. Buy Six for $59.94 and Get Two FREE*.

Fresh & FruityMcWilliams Inheritance Fruitwood White & Cabernet MerlotThese wines are specially made for the large group of drinkers who like the wine to have an emphasis on fruitiness; a quality that comes from retaining freshness and above all the grapey nature of the newly picked fruit. The art is to make it taste like a bunch of grapes crushed in your hand. Thus the end result is a fruity aroma, a very soft taste and a gentle sweet finish. This style of wine has been made in Australia since the 1930s but it is much easier to achieve now with refrigeration and other technical advances. For example the best new innovation is the ‘screw cap’ which extends the ‘freshness’ in the bottle by many years. Corks were a killer for this type of wine. We also applaud McWilliams for keeping the lid on prices as you will agree they are most reasonable. The price is $4.99 per bottle or $29.94 when you buy a 6 bottles.
