A well designed earthing system is essential to ensureprotection of personnel and equipment from dangerassociated with fault currents or lightning within buildings orareas falling within their ‘zone of protection’.

Earthing system designconsiderations

To achieve an efficient earthingsystem it is essential that a lowelectrical resistance to earth isachieved, using good qualityconductors with sufficient cross

sectional area to carry the expected current flow. Theconductors must also have a high corrosion resistance andmust meet internationally recognised European and Britishearthing standards.

The information contained in this section primarily refers toLightning Protection Earthing Systems (LPS) and does notdetail all earthing requirements for electrical wiring, althoughthere are some similarities. Please refer to the IEE 16thedition wiring regulations for more details.

Other factors to consider when designing an earthingsystem are:

A survey is required todetermine groundresistivity.

Soil moisture content:more moisture alwaysreduces soil resistance.

Chemical composition ofsoil: certain salts andminerals affect soilresistivity.

Temperature: if the groundis frozen its resistance becomes much higher.

The extent of any buried services which could affectthe earth termination networks.

Details of metallic service pipes, rails, tanks etc. whichmay need bonding into the earth system to prevent thedanger of side flashing.

The area available to place earth electrodes, this maybe limited.

Earth terminations &networks

An earth electrode should beconnected to each downconductor of a lightningprotection system (LPS). Earthrods need an earth inspectionhousing for periodic testing ofearth resistance.

Earth rods are used in most applications and are driven intothe ground as close as is practicable to the structure and thedown conductor. They are normally spaced at specifiedintervals corresponding to thespacing on the down conductors.

Resistance to earth

For an LPS the earth terminationnetwork as a whole should have acombined resistance of not morethan ten ohms, before bonding to building metalwork. However, the maximum resistance value for earthing systemsis application specific.

A single earth rod may not achieve the required resistancefigure and several may be need to be fitted to achieve this;their combined resistance is proportional to the reciprocal ofthe individual rod resistances to earth. This rule holds true aslong as each rod is situated outside the resistance area ofany other. To ensure this is the case, it is generally acceptedthat the minimum spacing between rods should not be lessthan their driven length.

The expected number of rods required to obtain a particularresistance value, e.g. ten ohms, can be roughly calculated. To do this the soil resistivity needs to be taken intoconsideration. A soil resistivity test will need to be performed.

There are several methods used to obtain a lowerresistance value:

More rods can be driven.

Rods can be driven deeper.

Rods of a larger diameter canbe used.

Ring conductors connecting rodstogether underground canbe used.

Where deep driving is not possible shorter rods with a largerdiameter can be used; copper earth mats and earth platescan be used in place of earth rods.

A “crow’s foot” configuration can be used where parallelconnection is not possible.

Where high resistance soil conditions are a problem soilconditioning agents can be used tobackfill rod holes. Conductive concretecan be used to backfill an earth mat. Botheffectively increase an electrodes crosssectional area and therefore reduce itsresistance to earth.

The international standards also specifythe recommended materials used for allearthing conductors and their dimensions.

Equipotential Bonding

It is common practice to use the buildings natural structuralsteelwork and bonding it to the LPS to further improve itsability to conduct lightning and fault currents to earth; priorpermission may be required.

Joints

Joints should bemechanicallyeffective, all jointsother than weldedones are a potentialdiscontinuity, andcare should be takento ensure contactsurfaces are clean

and that fixing clamps are tight and well protected fromcorrosion, which can occur if dissimilar metals are joined.Ideally there should be as few joints as possible in anearthing design.

Maintenance & life of an earth system

It is important to properly maintain an earth circuit to ensureit retains its ability to conduct the same current carryingcapacity as it did when it was originally installed. Earth rodresistances should be regularly checked. Corrosion and faultcurrents can cause high resistance joints leading tooverheating. However, if an earth system is correctly installedand maintained it should last for many years.

The information contained in thissection is intended as a guide andshould not be used to performdesigns. A.N.Wallis does notaccept responsibility for errors oromissions. Detailed information onearthing design is contained in

internationally recognised European and British earthingstandards. e.g. BS7430, BS7671.

Earthing Compound - MarconiteMarconite forms a permanent solution when mixed with cement and isused when certain ground conditions make it difficult to obtain a reliableearth resistance or installations might require a low resistance.

Marconite is used as a backfill to Wallis earth rods and plates.

Mixing Ratio = 3 : 1 (Marconite : Cement).

Earthing Compound - BentoniteBentonite can be supplied in powder or granular form and is a moistureretaining clay which is used to reduce soil resistivity.

Granular

Its easier to handle in granular form, the powder can cause dust inwindy conditions and blow away, granular is the preferred option forfilling trenches where the conductor is covered with Bentonite and thenwater poured over and mixed in the trench.

Powder

Powder is the preferred method for pouring into bore holes to ensurethe mixture is a thin enough consistency to reach the bottom of the borehole, if diamond drilling is required for deep holes possibly 40mtrs anddeeper and the Bentonite is to be pumped through the core into thehole powder would be the preferred option.

Structural Lightning Protection

Introduction

If correctly installed, fitting a lightning protection system(LPS) will minimise the risk of damage to structures andinjury to personnel by conducting high discharge currentssafely to earth. Protection against the secondary effects oflightning to internal electrical equipment, known as transientover voltage protection is achieved by the use of transientover voltage protectors; this is in addition to the LPS.

A LPS cannot protect against over voltage transients. Overvoltage transient protectors cannot protect against directlightning strikes. Both are required for total structural andequipment protection.

Lightning protection strategy

The normal strategy inachieving protection is tocapture the lightning at apreferred point by the use ofair terminations andconducting it via lowimpedance down conductorsand earth electrodes to a lowresistance earth of less thanten ohms. Air terminationsand down conductors arespaced at regular intervals toform a mesh of conductors around the perimeter of thebuilding and roof, known as a Faraday cage, and are joinedtogether by specially produced clamps and fixings orwelding.

Lightning protection system design considerations

A LPS is designed according to geographical location, localterrain, soil conditions size and height of building, type ofmaterial used in construction, type of material stored in thebuilding, use of building and is based on establishedstandards for risk assessment.

Air termination networks

The recommended spacing between conductors variesaccording to risk and is detailed in internationally recognisedEuropean and British lightning protection standards. E.g., amesh of conductors of 10 by 20 metres is consideredsufficient for most applications; however, a high risk structuremay require a 10 by 10 mesh.

There are two methods used to calculate the areaimmediately around a building protected by the air

termination; the “zone of protection” is used for buildings upto 20 metres; for buildings above this height the “rollingsphere” method is used.

Down conductors

The recommended spacing between down conductorsvaries according to risk and is detailed in internationallyrecognised European and British lightning protectionstandards. E.g., conductors may be spaced at 20 metres forsome buildings but this distance could be reduced to 10metres for tall or high risk buildings. Down conductorsshould be positioned as evenly as possible around theoutside walls of the structure, starting from the corners.

Minimum distances must be maintained to prevent sideflashing. Re-entrant loops are also to be avoided.

Earth terminations & networks

The information contained in this section primarily refers toLightning Protection Earthing Systems (LPS) and does notdetail all earthing requirements for electrical wiring, althoughthere are some similarities. Please refer to the IEE 16thedition wiring regulations for more details.

An earth electrode should be connected to each downconductor of a lightning protection system (LPS). Earth rodsmay need an earth inspection hosing for periodic testing ofearth resistance.

Earth rods are used in most applications and are driven intothe ground as close as is practicable to the structure and thedown conductor. They are normally spaced at specifiedintervals corresponding to the spacing on the downconductors.

Resistance to earth

For an LPS the earth termination network as a whole shouldhave a combined resistance of not more than ten ohms, before bonding to building metalwork. However, themaximum resistance value for earthing systems isapplication specific.

A single earth rod may not achieve therequired resistance

Page 33: Catalogue - Wallis Earthing & Lightning Protection

figure and several may be need to be fitted to achieve this;their combined resistance is proportional to the reciprocal ofthe individual rod resistances to earth. This rule holds true aslong as each rod is situated outside the resistance area ofany other. To ensure this is the case, it is generally acceptedthat the minimum spacing between rods should not be lessthan their driven length.

The expected number of rods required toobtain a particular resistance value, e.g.ten ohms, can be roughly calculated. Todo this the soil resistivity needs to betaken into consideration. A soil resistivitytest will need to be performed.

There are several methods used to obtaina lower resistance value:

More rods can be driven.

Rods can be driven deeper.

Rods of a larger diameter can be used.

Ring conductors connecting rods togetherunderground can be used.

Where deep driving is not possible shorter rods with a largerdiameter can be used; copper earth mats and earth platescan be used in place of earth rods.

A “crow’s foot” configuration can be used where parallelconnection is not possible.

Where high resistance soil conditions are a problem soilconditioning agents can be used to backfill rod holes.Conductive concrete can be used to backfill an earth mat. Both effectively increase an electrodes cross sectional areaand therefore reduce its resistance to earth.

The international standards also specify the recommendedmaterials used for all earthing conductors and theirdimensions.

Equipotential Bonding

It is common practice to use the buildings natural structuralsteelwork and bonding it to the LPS to further improve itsability to conduct lightning and fault currents to earth; priorpermission may be required.

Joints

Joints should be mechanically effective, all joints other thanwelded ones are a potential discontinuity, and care shouldbe taken to ensure contact surfaces are clean and that fixingclamps are tight and well protected from corrosion, whichcan occur if dissimilar metals are joined. Ideally there should

be as few joints as possible in anLPS design.

Maintenance & life of a LPS

It is important to properly maintaina LPS to ensure it retains its abilityto conduct the same currentcarrying capacity as it did when itwas originally installed. Earth rodresistances should be regularly

checked. Corrosion and fault currents can cause highresistance joints leading to overheating. However, if a LPS iscorrectly installed and maintained it should last for manyyears.

The information contained in this section is intended as aguide and should not be used to perform designs. A.N.Wallisdoes not accept responsibility for errors or omissions.Detailed information on LPS design is contained ininternationally recognised European and British LPSstandards. e.g. BS6651.
