A note from our Pastor:

St. Simon the Apostle Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018

Dynamic Catholic Alive!

“Those who Lead the Many to Justice” Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever. This passage from the Book of Daniel reminds us of the beautiful opportunity we have to lead others along the path of justice, righteousness, and goodness in this life. In our recent evangelization trainings, some people have stated that they are afraid of offending people when they offer correction or call someone out on their sins. However, we can offer this correction with love and gentleness, out of a genuine concern for their spiritual health and well-being. As baptized Christians, we are adopted sons and daughters of God who are called to remind others of their dignity and value and the eternal life that awaits them with God in heaven. This passage from the Book of Daniel reminds us of the wonders that await us in heaven. It is a healthy practice to call to mind often the reality of death, judgment, heaven, and hell. In response to our thoughts on these matters, we must consider how we are walking toward heaven each day and leading others to the same destination through encouraging words, acts of charity, expressions of forgiveness and mercy, and fraternal correction rooted in love.

St. Simon Scrip Gift Card 2018 Holiday Campaign!

Our Third Annual Holiday Shopping Campaign kicks off November 3

through January 1st. Last year our school and parish families purchased almost $80,000 in gift cards over the holiday season which earned our school $3,400. This is one of the easiest fundraisers to participate in and doesn’t cost anything! Simply buy gift cards to purchase everyday items (groceries, dining out, etc.) or to give as gifts and St. Simon earns up to 15%! Every family who purchases at least $200 in gift cards between November 3 and January 1 will be entered in a raffle to win a $100 Visa gift card! Earn another raffle ticket for every additional $200 you spend! Want to earn a bonus entry in the raffle? Every family who meets the $200 minimum sales amount and sets up presto pay and orders and pays online at least once between Nov. 3rd and Jan. 1st will earn a bonus entry in the raffle! Buy cards after all masses, at the parish office, or sign up online to order physical or electronic cards. Register at : online www.ShopWithScrip.com and place your order. St. Simon Registration#: 3E9LCB842L426. Thank you for your continued support of our school! If you have any questions, please contact Jen Kuehl at [email protected].

Dear Parishioners of St. Simon’s, A couple of people have approached me, asking questions about the Queen of Hearts raffle. This raffle was started with the specific intent of raising funds for a new electronic sign at the front of our campus. Here is the breakdown of where the money goes from the Queen of Hearts raffle: 70% of the money goes to the jackpot winner 20% of the money goes to raising funds for the new electronic sign 10% of the money goes to the different parish organizations who help sell the tickets every week We have begun the process of getting some bids for the new electronic sign; most of them have been in the $30,000 - $40,000 range. We are still a little ways off from raising the needed funds, but we are getting close! Thanks to Leo Bartolotta who has been the driving force behind the Queen of Hearts raffle and the efforts to get an electronic sign! I hope you have a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

In our second reading from Hebrews, we see that when Jesus allowed himself to be crucified he was actually being a priest, offering himself for the sins of the world. After giving his life for us, he takes his place as God's equal. He is now the eternal Priest, so all clergy since the time of Jesus are visible signs of that priesthood. When we celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus' sacrifice is there. We are present at his death and resurrection, without needing a flux capacitor or a time warp. His sacrifice is an eternal one, redeeming all past and future sins. So if you have come back to church after being absent for years, God has already offered you forgiveness. The Eucharist also reminds us that Jesus is present in glory, with us always, sharing his priesthood with all the baptized. We can show God's mercy by forgiving each other. Since Jesus lives in us, we offer our lives as sacrifice for sins. Does that mean we are supposed to seek ways to suffer? No, it means the suffering we cannot avoid can become our offering to God, a way to take up our cross as Jesus did, and a way to experience God's power in our weakness. At the Eucharist, we pray with the priest, "that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God. . ." All the sacrifices we make, from accepting serious illness, to giving up something for Lent, are ways we take part in the priesthood of Christ. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

November 18, 2018 - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.” MARK 13:26 We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, “What have you done with the gifts that I have given you?” How will you respond?

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are hearing the words of Jesus and living them out.

St. Vincent De Paul Society News :

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Giacomo Leone, husband of Vita Leone. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

The members of Spirit and Truth wish you a blessed Thanksgiving. We will not be meeting this week. Join us next Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary, or see our upcoming schedule at spiritandtruthstl.org.

Who is invited? The event is offered to ladies high-school age and

older. You do not need to be a member of St. Simon the Apostle to attend. Take the opportunity to invite friends or family! Because of limited seating, reservations are required.

What is this event? Advent by Candlelight is a special evening for women

to set aside the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations and focus their minds and hearts on the birth of Christ. This evening includes uplifting Scripture readings, music by the SLUH Choir, and reflections from our guest speaker Mary Catherine Trefney of our most Holy Mother Mary’s journey to bring Jesus Christ to the world. This is a free event; however, a goodwill offering at the end of the evening will be accepted.

How does it work? In an atmosphere lit only by candlelight, as a hostess,

you set a banquet table (8 seats, including your seat). You may do this on your own or share the responsibility with a friend. You, as the hostess, may invite ladies to sit at your table, or allow the seats to be filled via the sign-up process. No requirement to be a hostess, you can also just sign to be included in a table with open spaces. You may bring fancy dinnerware, wine glasses, silverware, etc. or keep it simple. Your guests, then bring part of a meal of their choice (appetizers, entrée, and/or dessert) for those at your table.

For Reservations and Hostess Guidelines, contact: Terri Prange (314-566-1503) or Laurie Zeitler (314-368-2756).
