    SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

    The Ordinary

There’s something very ordinary for a fisherman about washing nets. Daily work, done with some drudgery but knowing that it is essential for a good catch of fish which would feed the family at this time Jesus called his first apostles.

There is something sacred about the ordinary. About bathing a child, loving a spouse, daily employment, family time and all that goes to make up our days.

In the middle of all this God can surprise us and call us into his service. Our expectation is sometimes different – that we need long times of prayer to find God, or read about him, or do big things for him. Just as the smallest things are done out of human love, God is found in the ordinary.

The old Irish spirituality had blessings for everything – for milking a cow, cleaning and dusting a room, visiting the sick and many more. there were prayers for meals, for a safe journey and a happy death. Our Irish spirituality found God as much in mountains and people as in the church, and often more so.

Maybe the disciples remember in difficult times the way they were called in their ordinary work, and found their ongoing call to follow the Lord in the ordinary of their lives for the rest of their lives.

Give me O Lord a love for the ordinary; remind me how ordinary

you were for so much of your life. Amen.

  • BECOMING CATHOLIC

Each year the parish begins to ask anyone from the age of 8, who may wish to join the Catholic Faith to contact the Parish Office and arrange a time to speak with Father. Following these meetings if agreed, the individual will enrol to participate in the RCIA Program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). As the Body of Christ and members of the Church, we endeavour to offer as much pastoral support as we can, welcoming all candidates into our community. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming Catholic and participating in the RCIA Program, as either a Candidate, Sponsor or Catechist please contact the Parish Office on 3205 1493.

    MMP CENACLE

The Marion Movement of Priests Cenacle has resumed and is now held each Monday night, 7.30pm at 3 Fairlane St, Joyner. For more information, call 0448 182 896. "Through my Marian Movement of Priests, I am calling all my children to consecrate themselves to my Heart, and to spread everywhere cenacles of prayer among priests, the faithful, children, youth, and in families."

IMPORTANT PLEA ABOUT REGISTERING FOR MASS

We continue to be blessed with no community transmission of COVID in Queensland and the latest advice from the Archdiocese is that current arrangements about maximum numbers permitted at Mass, maintaining social distancing, sanitizing and cleaning requirements remain the same. Our maximum is 160 people and everyone must be registered on the sheets found at the entrance to the church. Noncompliance of all of these requirements can result in large on-the-spot fines for Parishes. Because of the cap in numbers at each Mass, we ask that if you have registered, but for whatever reason are unable to attend, you please let us know as early as possible either by text or phoning Bryan on 0448 380 887 or Marie on 0412 981 026. Please leave your name and the Mass you have registered for. This will enable us to fill your spot. We also ask that when you register, you provide the Christian name, as well as the surname, of all attendees even when they are in your family. All these requirements are a burden on us all, but by complying with a positive spirit we are making sure that we can continue to come to Mass to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and to thank God for the many blessings He has given us.

FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH EUCHARISTIC ADORATION We are very pleased to announce that we have resume all night Adoration on the first Friday of each month, until the 8.00am Saturday morning mass. We welcome you all to come and spend an hour with our Lord.

“Go to Jesus. He loves you and is waiting for you to give you many graces. He is on the altar surrounded by angels adoring and praying. Let them make some room for you and join them in doing what they do.”

    ST JOSEPH PRAYER CARD

Pope Francis has declared that this year is dedicated to

St Joseph. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the

saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church by

Pope Pius IX on Dec. 8, 1870. So the year begins Dec 8,

    2020 and concludes on Dec 8, 2021.

To mark and assist with this occasion, copies of a special

St Joseph Prayer Card produced by Mary’s Rosary Chain

Inc are available from the Piety Stall.

For more details on this initiative by Pope Francis see the

article in the Christmas copy of the Catholic Leader on

    line or in hard print.

  • READINGS FOR THE 3rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Acknowledgement: Excerpts from the English translation of the Roman Missal © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). All rights reserved.

FIRST READING Jonah 3:1-5, 10 (JB) A reading from the prophet Jonah. The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: 'Up!' he said 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.' Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day's journey. He preached in these words, 'Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.' And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least. God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour. And God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 24:4-9 (JB) R. Teach me your ways, O Lord. Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths. Make me walk in your truth, and teach me: for you are God my saviour. R. Remember your mercy, Lord, and the love you have shown from of old. In your love remember me, because of your goodness, O Lord. R. The Lord is good and upright. He shows the path to those who stray, he guides the humble in the right path; he teaches his way to the poor. R.

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 (JB) A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians Brothers: our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is passing away. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Mark 1:15 (JB) Alleluia, alleluia! The kingdom of God is near: believe the Good News! Alleluia! GOSPEL Mark 1:14-20 (JB) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. 'The time has come' he said 'and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.' As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake - for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, 'Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.' And at once they left their nets and followed him. Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in their boat, mending their nets, he called them at once, and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

  • AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

When we are unable physically to attend Mass, we invite you to consider the practice of spiritual communion.

    My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

    Amen.

THE YEAR OF ST JOSEPH PRAYER To you, O blessed Joseph (Ad te, beate Ioseph)

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

Jesus invites us to abide in Him so as to bear much fruit (see Jn 15:5-9). Abiding in the Lord means finding the courage to step outside of ourselves to take care of others' needs and give a Christian witness in the world.
