PASTOR’S NOTEThere is something fresh and exciting about the start of a brand-new year. We take down the old calendar and put up the new one. And in that simple act, we symbolize the fact that we are not bound by the past. We can make every new day an occasion of grace, blessing, encounter with the Lord and the rewarding experience of connecting with those around us in ways that bring God’s presence to them and to us alike. So take care to use these coming months, weeks, days and hours well in living out your response to God’s call to holiness. May the good Lord fill every day of this year for you. And may your actions, words and decisions bring you an ever deeper awareness of how He calls you to Himself to give you His peace and joy.

This will be my last reflection for several of the weeks in this new year. As of January 1, I begin the sabbatical that will see me praying, learning, traveling and renewing over the coming six months. During that time, the clergy and staff of the parish will continue to care for you and share with you the loving call of God to discipleship and action. Father Greg Lesher will be acting in my name in many ways and keeping the day-to-day life of the parish moving forward. You will have a chance to see his thoughts and reflections in this space in the next several months.

I would ask you to please support him as well as the rest of the clergy and staff, and keep them and me in your prayers. Know that I will be remembering you daily in mine. I hope to have occasional opportunities to bring you up-to-date on what I am doing and how the time is being a blessing to me and my priesthood. May the Good Lord keep us all in His care throughout the new year.

– Msgr. Tom

MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

3

Mary, Mother of GodThis Saturday & Sunday, December 31 & January 1:

This weekend, on the octave (eighth day) of Christmas, we celebrate this very important, ancient feast. It is typically a Holy Day of Obligation, although it falls on a Sunday this year. As we begin a new year, it is fitting that we honor Mary as an essential part of our Church and our own lives.

This weekend follows the regular Sunday Mass schedule, except there will not be a 5:30pm Mass on Sunday, January 1.

We celebrate Mary, the holy mother of God – and our mother too!

our HERITAGERENEWING

The formal solicitation period of our Renewing Our Heritage capital campaign concluded with the end of the year, and I am pleased to report that total amount pledged to the effort exceeded $6.3 million. I am very grateful to everyone who participated in this campaign and made it the success that it is.

We still have some parishioners who haven’t made a decision regarding the campaign, and volunteers will continue to follow up with those families. We would like to hear from you whether you can pledge or not. An answer either way will let us know we do not need to continue our follow-up efforts.

The coming year will be an exciting one as a result of this capital campaign. We are working on the final elements of the renovation design and are pursuing final approval from the archdiocese to begin construction. We hope to begin the renovations shortly after Easter and anticipate being able to complete the project before Christmas. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress as the year goes along.

– Msgr. Tom

Happy New Year! The clergy and staff of St. Thomas More would like to wish you and your loved ones a blessed, grace-filled New Year!

In Memory of Father MelAs you may have heard, our longtime priest Fr. Mel Thompson has passed away in December 2016. His beautiful funeral Mass on December 27 was attended by many STM parishioners.

When Father Mel departed St. Thomas More in July 2015, he included the following quote in his parting note in the bulletin. We hope this message will bring you comfort and fond remembrance of the joy Father Mel brought to so many lives.

“May leprechauns strew happinessWherever you walk each dayAnd Irish angels smile on you All along the way.”

“Pray for me, as I will for thee, that we may merrily meet in heaven.”– One of Father Mel’s favorite quotes from our patron, St. Thomas More
