0962 January 2016 Catholic School News Dear Blessed Pope Paul VI School Community, Welcome back and Happy New Year. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break filled with laughter, family gatherings and good times with friends. This month we celebrate the virtue of Courage. Let us embrace this virtue as we commit to New Year goals for ourselves and family. As we enter in winter-like temperatures, please send your children to school with appropriate outdoor clothing and footware. If there is an accumulation of snow, indoor shoes are required and will be more comfortable and safer during instructional hours. Many students are wearing accessories, such as scarves, hoodies of various nature and gloves inside during the day. Please refer to TCDSB Uniform Policy regarding appropriate and acceptable school attire. Solid navy blue and solid white only, with no logos or patterns are acceptable. Outdoor accessories are for outdoors not for indoors and can be worn for outdoor recess. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated with this concern. There will be indoor or shortened recess for inclement or severe weather related days. The school is updated by communications at the Board and you and your children are encouraged to plan ahead for these days. Please do not send your child to school before 8:45 a.m. on inclement weather or rainy mornings. Supervision only starts at 8:45 a.m. and students will be invited to enter the school by the side entrance from the large yard to the gymnasium, where there will be supervision. Winter Weather

During the winter season, the school receives calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. The Toronto Catholic District School Board Policy determines that students will remain indoors when the temperature in conjunction with the wind speed, creates a wind chill factor that could possibly lead to frostbite. Students should also come to school dressed

appropriately for the weather (coats, hats, mitts, boots, etc). For health and safety reasons students must have indoor shoes. Students should not walk through the school with wet socks, boots or shoes.

Cold Alerts and Weather-Related Cancellations/Closures With the approach of winter weather, Twitter and the board website are the best sources of the latest information

relating to cold weather alerts, cancellations and closures. Get all the information here:

https://www.tcdsb.org/FORSTUDENTS/HealthandSafety/Pages/Weather-Related-Safety-Concerns.aspx

And remember to check the Toronto Student Transportation Group website for any school bus delays throughout the

year. http://www.torontoschoolbus.org/

Catholic School Parent Council News January’s CSPC meeting has been moved to February 3, 2016 starting at 6:30 p.m. Hope you can all attend.

Thank you Blessed Pope Paul VI for participating in Bullying Awareness week. It was a huge success. Throughout the week, students made posters to raise awareness, and designed Peace Doves which will be displayed throughout the school over the next year. Students also wrote poems and were challenged each day with a “peace task”. One involved playing with someone you’ve never played with before. Another task included smiling at 10 people throughout your day. There were also “Secret Saints” outside at recess to find students who were engaged in peaceful actions and play. The students were given certificates and recognized over the PA each day. Let’s continue to be a peaceful and happy learning community at Blessed Pope Paul VI. From the students of Ms. Silva’s grade 4 class. Peace Activities Monday- Research a peace maker in the world. Find out where they lived, when they lived- what makes them a peacemaker. Accommodate as needed for grade. Possibilities include: Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandi, Jesus, Dalia Lama, Nelson Mandela Tuesday- Smile at 10 people today. Write a short reflection of their experience today smiling at people who needed a smile. How did it make them feel? How they think it make the other person feel. Wednesday- Encourage students to play with someone they have never played with today. Have students write or just discuss with a buddy who the person they played with was and how the experience made them feel. Thursday- In your mailbox you will find a dove. Please have students write the following statements and fill them in. Peace feels like…., Peace sounds like…., Peace feels like. These doves will be added to a hopefully beautiful display that will showcase everyone’s thoughts and feels on PEACE Friday- Invite students to write a poem about peace. It could be in any style they wish, acrostic, diamante, Haiku, Alphabet poem, free verse, etc, Share the poems orally or add them to your prayer tables in your classroom.

Learning with Caring Canine Toronto Therapy Dogs

Caring Canine Toronto Therapy Dogs has joined the Blessed Pope Paul learning community. Caring Canine is a non-profit volunteer-run organization founded in 2004. The volunteers and Professor Dogs (trained therapy dogs) read, learn, and socialize with students at schools. Research has shown that children benefit from learning with therapy dogs in multiple ways:

Improved literacy skills

Reduced stress

Increased emotional stability

Enhanced social interaction

Facilitated learning of respect, empathy, and responsibility “The significant improvements in self-concept and reading skills have just been amazing” E. D’Angelo,Literacy Teacher, TCDSB “The contact with dogs makes the kids more aware of sharing, eye contact, and more willing to sing songs” De Camargo, Teacher, Special Ed. Girls Primary Soccer

On Wednesday, December the 3rd, the Primary girl’s soccer team travelled to St. Nicholas of Bari school. They played four games and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed a wonderful day playing soccer and meeting students from other schools. We scored goals and tried our best. The teams we played were: St Nicholis of Bari, St. Luigi and St John the Evangelist. The girls on the team were from Grade 1: Valerie, Leah, Lorena, Juliana, from Grade 2: Leah, Annabelle, Amanda, Teresa, from Grade 3: Alexandra, Marianna, Emily, Mikayla, Marisa and Jessica. We can’t wait to play next year again. It was great exercise and lots of fun. Leah Hordyk, Annabelle McPhee.

Ms. Pozzobon is so pleased to present the work completed in French by the students of Ms. Leadbetter and Ms. Clara's classes. In connection with the Writing and Oral Communication curriculum strands, these students have created their own Instagram pages while following the writing process. Their Instagram pages included a profile picture and bio as well as pictures and captions (sentences) written in French. The

purpose of their writing is to create an Instagram page for the school community that reflects their desire for

peace. Well done to the classes of Ms. Clara and Ms. Leadbetter! Keep it up! Soyons Branches! Sandra

On the evening of December 8 we celebrated the birth of our Saviour as a school community. Through Scripture and song, students told the story of Jesus’ coming into the world as a baby in Bethlehem. Classes worked hard throughout November learning and practising the songs. We are grateful to Mrs. Ly for sharing her talents with us as she put together the Scripture readings and songs. She faithfully practiced with each class to ensure that students were ready to perform. It was a gift in our school to create a sacred celebration together.

Merry Christmas!!! On December 18th, 2015, the students of Ms. Silva’s and Ms. Mastrogiacomo’s class celebrated their re-enacted dramatization of the Polar Express Picture book by Chris Alsburg. The classroom was transformed into a Train. The children were decked in their pyjamas as costumes to represent the children on the train. The teacher’s wore their annual conductor Christmas suit and served the children hot chocolate and cookies. Through the re-enactment the children conveyed the magic of

Christmas by the end of the dramatization everyone could hear the Bells of Christmas!!!

By grade 4 and 5 students.

Santa’s visit to Blessed Pope Paul VI

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas! On December the 9th Santa came to Blessed Pope Paul to visit all the good little boys and girls. Santa was very generous with his time, he spoke to the children, walked around the school, and gave all of the boys and girls that took a photo with him candy canes. Everyone was so happy to see him, and we can’t wait for him to come back next year. Our Santa picture fundraiser was also a complete success. The school raised $1020.00! That’s fantastic! We would like to thank all the staff, students, and Blessed Pope Paul community who helped make the day so magical.

By Tayshawn Gordon, Samantha Colangelo, Selena Ramos and Eliana Dinis.

Blessed Pope Paul VI Parenting center celebrated Christmas with a lot of activities. We made our own Christmas decorations with parents, baked cookies , read stories with a special visitor , and watched movies in our pajamas. We ended our Christmas activities

with a Potluck lunch. Families came together and enjoyed different cultural foods along with the children.

ELF visits …..“The Bear’s Cave”

Elf on the Shelf came to stay with Ms. Salituro’s Kindergartens during Advent. The students named him Chase. Elf wrote to the students about giving and caring for others.

One day someone tickled Elf’s toes and he lost his magic. But the students wrote him letters and drew pictures and Elf got better.

It was fun having Chase in our class.
