Volunteers Wanted

Diabetes Research at UU ‘My name is Carla Harkin and I am a PhD student at Ulster University. I am recruiting participants for my study in Diabetic Nephropathy and particularly seeking older participants. My research project is being conducted in collaboration with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland and Randox Laboratories. Diabetic kidney disease is a complication of diabetes, often causing them not to work as well as they should. Over a longer period, this can cause problems that are more serious so it is important that it is diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. This project hopes to identify a more effective method for diagnosing diabetic kidney disease by comparing blood and urine in participants who are: 1)non-diabetic, 2)diabetic and 3) have diabetic kidney disease. I am looking to recruit participants as controls, that is, non-diabetic with no kidney issues. If agreeable, all participants will be asked to: • Provide one blood sample. • Provide one urine sample. • Allow measurements like height weight and blood pressure to be taken. • Provide answers to some questions about your diet, lifestyle etc.

This study has been ethically approved by the Ulster University Research Ethics Committee (REC/18/LO/0785/AM01) and the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) (IRAS Project ID: 244442).

Get Involved in Shark Conservation with Ulster Wildlife 'My name is Heidi, I am the Project Coordinator of Sea Deep, Ulster Wildlife's shark conservation project. We work alongside sea anglers, schools, dive clubs and community groups to help safeguard the future of endangered sharks, skates and rays in our local seas. From tagging sharks at sea, to hunting for their eggcases on the shore, we are training and equipping volunteers to help identify important spawning and nursery grounds, so we can target our conservation efforts.

We deliver free shark eggcase identification training, talks about shark conservation and guided eggcase hunts, in hopes that groups will then continue searching for eggcases on their local beach throughout the year. Recording shark eggcase finds allows us to understand what species of sharks are in our waters, and potential areas that they are using as nursery grounds for their pups. These are important habitats in their lifetime that need to be protected, and eggcase records collected by citizen scientists produce evidence that can be used to inform policy, management and conservation action.

After numerous requests from exhibitors and visitors alike, the first Belfast 50 Plus Expo was held in February 2019 and was extremely well received. Plans are well underway for a bigger 2020 event.

The lifestyle event for people 50 and over has been running successfully for 20 years in the RDS in Dublin, and in the last 10 years has branched out to Cork, Galway, Limerick and the Costa del Sol, due to the huge interest from the general public who want to be inspired when they retire. Over 15,000 people and 250 exhibitors regularly attend the Dublin event.

The show also benefits from being part of the only Genealogy and Family/Social History event on the island of Ireland, Back to Our Past.See Page 4 for more details.
