CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 4 Term 3

From the PrincipalToday is The Solemnity of the Assumption,

an occasion where all our students and

staff gathered in the Basilica to celebrate

Mary’s assumption in to heaven. Term 3 is

often referred to as Our Lady’s Term, with

Mary’s birthday in September.

The life of Mary is an important element

in the development of a CBC gentleman.

For parents and students who have been

part of our community for a few years,

you may recall at a Mothers’ Day Mass I

spoke of the continuing grief I carry as a

result of losing my mother at a young age.

To this day, she is the first thing I think

about each morning, and the last thing I

think about at night. I feel incomplete as a

result of her death, but the legacy of this

sad circumstance is that I have a hyper-

sensitive appreciation of motherhood.

One of the attributes we seek to

develop in the CBC gentlemen is that of

selflessness, and an understanding of the

value of forming positive relationships,

especially with regard to respecting

women. Each year, during The Rite

Journey, the boys of Year 9 take part

in a presentation that focusses on the

way women are depicted in the media.

In Term 3 of the programme, a female

member of staff is invited to each TRJ

class to speak about some of the issues

they have faced during their lives; issues

that have resulted from discrimination,

not being taken seriously or being

objectified. The opportunity to hear

one of their teachers relate real-life

experiences, and to ask questions,

personalises some of the situations that

still arise for women even in the 21st

century. At CBC Fremantle, we seek to

challenge the archetypal ‘Aussie bloke’

culture, as recently evidenced on The

Footy Show, instead developing a culture

that respects, loves, appreciates and

honours women, and the important role

they play in our lives.

Last year, Mr Troy Foote and his TRJ class

initiated a dinner to honour, and show

appreciation for, the female members

of our staff. This week, another TRJ class

continued this young tradition, and

symbolically in the week of the Solemnity

of the Assumption, designed, prepared,

served (and cleaned up afterwards!)

a sumptuous four course meal for 32

women. The occasion was held in the

Boardroom, and the boys also turned

their talents to the decoration and

music. There are more details in the

Newsroom on the College website, but

the smiles, esprit de corps, puffed-out

chests and sheer joy that the boys felt

and experienced was palpable. Mr Kenny

often tells the boys that the only true

joy they will experience in life is when

they give to others, and on Wednesday

evening the boys served, acknowledged,

and celebrated the importance of the

female members of our staff.

In a Catholic School, we already have

a model for the treatment of women.

Women are prominent in the story of

Jesus. He was born of a woman, had

numerous interactions with women,

and was seen first by women after his

resurrection. Jesus gave no explicit

teaching on the role of women in the

church. In fact, he left no teaching at

all concerning women as a class of

people ... He treated every woman he

met as a person in her own right. In the

development of tomorrow’s gentlemen,

the actions and attitudes of Jesus towards

women are a pivotal reference point.

To all our boys who are fortunate enough

to have a mother, don’t take her for

granted. She is not just a cook or a

cleaner. Love her, serve her, savor her

love and most importantly, try your best

to bring joy to her life. God knows she

deserves it!

• making driving lessons less stressful

• the role of driving supervisors, and

• avoiding common crashes.

Venue: ALA, CBC Fremantle

Date: Thursday 21 August from 6.00pm - 7:00pm

As part of our strong commitment to student well-being and safety, CBC Fremantle has

On Tuesday, 19 August 2014, CBC

Fremantle will compete in the annual

sporting challenge against Mazenod

College. The results have been close

since the competition began, with

Mazenod taking the title in 2013 for the

first time.

Throughout the day, different teams

will be travelling to the Trinity Playing

Fields on Manning Road to participate

in Football, Soccer, Hockey, Rugby and

Basketball. The Year 7 and Years 8/9

games start at 9.30am, Year 10s will play

at 11.00am and the Year 11/12s begin at

approximately 1.00pm.

Both CBC Fremantle and Mazenod have

strong sporting cultures, with a focus on

personal excellence, team cohesion and

sportsmanship. Sport at CBC Fremantle

provides students the opportunity to

represent the College in their area

of mastery and develop a sense of

belonging and pride associated with CBC

Fremantle. The Oblate Cup provides the

framework for large numbers of our boys

to experience success, build resilience,

develop and nurture their mateships and

enhance their sense of belonging. The

day promises to be a successful one for

all students involved as we look forward

to representing CBC Fremantle on the

sporting arena and giving our personal

best.

On the day we will be recognising ‘Best

on Ground’ performances at a small

presentation after each round of games

with a medallion. These medallions

have been named after known Brothers

associated with the Colleges for each

sport:

Football – Br Kevin Paull

Hockey – Br Pat Kelly

Rugby – Br Allan Wedd

Basketball – Br John Murray

Soccer – Br J Morgan

After the final fixtures, shields named

after Oblate Priests associated with both

schools, will be presented to the College

who wins the most games for each sport.

Football – Fr Ian McIntosh

Basketball– Fr John Hannah

Rugby Union – Fr John Sherman

Soccer – Fr Michael McMahon

Hockey – Fr Tony Colbert

The Oblate Cup will then be awarded

to the College which has won the most

shields overall, with a representative

student from the winning school receiving

this and saying a few words.

It would be great to see as many

spectators as possible, so please spread

the word to anyone you know that would

be interested. All participants will bring

home an information letter; if you have

not received one, please contact me at

[email protected].
