It has been wonderful attending the many events that celebrate our student achievements for the year. I have met many of our parents and community members and heard the stories of their child’s experience and journey at our college. I was very appreciative of the gratitude shown toward the professionalism of our staff and the care that they show for our students. We farewelled our second cohort of Year 12 graduates at the Presentation Night and breakfast in October. They shared their journey with the rest of the college students and we thanked them for their leadership of the student body across the year. We wish them all the best with their WACE exams and all future endeavours. To the Year 12 parents and carers who have been on the journey with us and supported the college, I thank you for your contribution. There were many heart-felt stories from parents of how our college had given their child the confidence to fly. In our second year nearly everything I have been to has been bigger and better than last year. The Music Extravaganza was no exception, with what was an absolutely amazing show of our school community involving primary schools, Specialist Music students, the Performing Arts Academy, the Djidi Djidi Girls Academy, Clontarf Academy and our English and Arts Learning Areas. It was very special to see our local primary school students, Fremantle College students and local community come together to produce a spectacular show that clearly highlighted what effort, determination and talent can achieve. Mike Gowland demonstrated why he was a WA Education Awards Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalist with his determination and vision, producing an educational experience that was second to none for the students involved. Students in Years 7 to 10 will be working right up until the end of the term, ensuring we are making the most of the time we have left this year. Please help to support us with keeping students on track by ensuring their regular attendance and that they are ready for school. I often hear the stories that students say they are not doing any work and do not need to attend. Please let teachers know if you have concerns as I can assure you students are completing assessments right up until the end of the year. We had a wonderful group of Year 11 students nominate for the positions of College Captains 2020 and they presented their speeches to students and staff prior to voting. We have changed the structure of the student leadership at the college based on feedback from students and the focus of the college. It was great to see so many students putting their hand up for a leadership role and I can already see that there will be strength in our student voice in 2020. I would like to thank our community for your massive response to making a financial contribution to your child’s education through the timely payment of your contributions and charges. It has made such a positive difference to our college and the opportunities we have been able to provide for our students. We are in the process of sending out our contributions and charges for 2020. For students in high cost options and Specialist programs we have requested a 50% payment of your charges prior to students commencing in these courses next year. You will start receiving your statements by Week 6 and 7 of term. Our P&C have been doing amazing work to support our college with the many projects, social functions and fundraising activities that they have been involved in. They supported the Music Extravaganza with their pop up snack bar and sausage sizzle, held a Bowls Night on the green and have provided much needed shade and water down on the oval. If you would like to join our P&C or take part in the planning for next year, please contact our P&C President: pcpresident@ fremantlecollege.wa.edu.au to express your interest. Based on feedback from the community, the P&C are looking at our uniform to see if there are some enhancements we can make, particularly with the options for shorts. We are welcoming our new 2020 Year 7 students at Orientation Day in Week 7. This is a great opportunity for our current students to demonstrate their leadership and welcome our primary school students into the next phase of their education. I hope you enjoy the last term of 2019 as much as I have enjoyed the year. It is great to be part of the Fremantle College community and see our students flourish. Year 12 Presentation Eveningby Emma Walker, Associate Principal Yr 10 -12

The culmination of 5 years of secondary schooling was celebrated at our Year 12 Presentation Evening on Wednesday 23 October.

The evening was opened with a beautiful dance and Welcome to Country by our Djidi Djidi Girls Academy students. Our Year 12 students were acknowledged for their academic achievements, with subject awards presented and we also celebrated a number of students for individual successes that met our college values.

Students, staff, community and family members joined together to celebrate our students, meeting for a supper after the ceremony. It was wonderful to see so many parents, staff and family members present and the smiling faces of our Year 12s, realising that the hard work was almost over!

We all wish our Year 12s every success in the future.

Our staff produced a farewell video send off for the students, which can be viewed via the following link:

News from Specialist Contemporary Musicby Mike Gowland, Specialist Music Coordinator

Fremantle College hosted the Time Machine Extravaganza, a musical and performance collective which involved a number of different groups from within and outside our college community. With a wonderful Acknowledgement to Country and Didgeridoo performance by our Clontarf boys opening the show, our Djidi Djidi Girls Academy students then took to the stage with a welcome dance. A sensory explosion followed, with collaborative performances from our Specialist Contemporary Music students, joined by our Performing Arts Academy and local primary school IMSS (Instrumental Music School Services) students in the ‘training orchestra’.

The ‘training orchestra’ consisted of IMSS students in Year 5 and 6 from eleven local primary schools who have been practising for this event over the last four weeks. All production for the event was managed by the Specialist Contemporary Music students completing their Certificate III Music Industry.

The FC Media Crew were also in attendance, providing a visual memory of the evening with some beautiful photography and some great video footage.

We wonderful effort by all involved.

News from Specialist Marine Studies - Practicalby Craig Smith, Marine Studies Teacher

The year has not slowed for our Marine Studies students!

Our Year 10s have recently completed their Recreational Skippers Ticket at the Marine Education Boatshed in East Fremantle, earning themselves a lifelong qualification and one point toward their WACE. Each student must attain 85% as a pass mark for the theory exam and 90% in the practical assessment. We congraulate our Year 10s for their persistance and effort attaining their Recreational Skippers Ticket.

The Year 7s and 9s have been off site performing wreck snorkels at the Omeo and local shore dive spots with some A grade weather and visibility.

Our Year 8s recently commenced their sailing unit at the Fremantle Sailing Club, where they are learning a lot – especially to watch out for the jib-boom!

News from the Science Classroom - Specialist Marine Studiesby Grace Orifici and Prue Jewell, Marine Studies Teachers

The Year 7s recently performed squid dissections, as part of their Science studies in Specialist Marine. This dissection exercise provided our students with the opportunity to learn first hand about the anatomy and the adaptation of molluscs in their marine environment.

Our Year 7 to 9 students are all looking forward to the ‘Beach Clean Up’ Day excursion on 20 November 2019. Since the introduction of mass-produced plastics in the early 20th century, humanity has produced an estimated 8300 million tonnes of it. Around three-quarters has been thrown away, and 80 per cent of that has drifted into the environment or gone into landfill. Eight million tonnes a year ends up in the ocean – 5 trillion pieces and counting (NEW Scientist, 2018). Our students are all too aware of this and want to do something about it. How can we change our behaviour and spread the message to reduce, reuse and recycle? By participating in a large Beach Clean up, that’s how! Every little bit counts.

This year will have an added experience of the Noongar people from Fremantle talking to our students about how the indigenous people used the oceans off Fremantle and were sustainable on their practice. The Djidi Djidi Girls Academy will be performing a Welcome to Country dance to the students to start the beach clean off in a good cleansing way.

News from Mathsby Gail Dirk, Maths HoLA

Our Gifted and Talented and Academic extension students in Years 7, 8 and 9 participated in the Maths Talent Quest investigation which started in Term 2. It was an excellent opportunity for students to use the Mathematical Thinking process to create their own questions from a situation which interested them and then research, design, explore, collaborate and communicate their findings.

Students could work on a project individually or in groups of 3 or 4. The entries were of a really good standard and 7 entries were selected to participate in the WA state competition.

Fremantle College ended up with 2 distinctions in the group entries with many schools from all over WA competing.

Well done to these students on a fantastic achievement.

SUBS in Schoolsby Nic Glorie, Gifted and Talented Coordinator

RE-engineering Australia’s SUBS in Schools National Finals are being held in Adelaide this year in week 9 of this term. Due to a strong and competitive showing at the state finals earlier this term, Fremantle College’s team, The Omeo have received a wildcard entry into the national finals. The teams five Year 10 students, Alexandra, Jamie, Cordelia, Rueben and Heather are busy preparing. The SUBS in Schools competition is the pinnacle of STEM competition in Australia and we wish our students the very best in their preparations.

Fremantle College were represented by three teams in the recent Re-engineering Australia’s SUBS in Schools State Finals.

Our teams (consisting of one Year 8 team and two Year 10 teams) put up a great fight and remained a competitive threat throughout the competition. Team ‘The Omeo’ (Year 10) won the Innovation Award and Team ‘MESR’ (Year 10) won the award for Outstanding Industry Collaboration.

All three teams showed great sportsmanship and comradery throughout the event. This is a high level STEM competition where all teams are faced with unforeseen challenges and setbacks. Our teams embodied our college values and represented Fremantle College with pride.

News from HASSby Rebecca McClelland, HASS HoLA

Over the past week, the HASS Department has been busily working on activities concerning Remembrance Day, culminating in small individual class ceremonies on Monday 11 November. This year, students watched clips explaining Australia’s varied roles in WWI and also how the tradition of wearing a poppy originated. They also participated in designing a medal exemplifying the sacrifice and attributes that the service men and women possessed. These formed a poignant display in the college Library.

The HASS Department also co-ordinated the World Teacher’s Day celebrations recently, whereby students completed certificates of appreciation for staff members. The day was celebrated with morning tea and a display in the Library.

Volleyballby Rachel Wicks, HPE Teacher

We had five teams represent Fremantle College at the ‘Alcohol, Think Again’ Beach Volleyball Championships on 3 November 2019. Our results were:

Year 11/12 Boys - 1st Year 9/10 Girls - 2nd Year 9/10 Boys 1 - 2nd Year 9/10 Boys 2 - 3rd Year 9/10 Boys 3 - 4th

The students played and umpired all day from 8:00am - 4:00pm and did an outstanding job representing Fremantle College. It was wonderful to see the students be-friending the other schools, playing well and demonstrating the college’s core values at all times.

Big thanks to Jordan Langham and Jeff Adams, who gave up their Sunday to support the students all day. And thanks to Mr Adams for these beautiful photos.

Follow the Dream - Deadly Dreaming Dayby Nathan Dines - FTD Coordinator

Follow the Dream students attended Murdoch University and The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre’s Deadly Dreaming Day along with hundreds of fellow Aboriginal students from across Perth. The aim of the day was to give students a taste of what University life is like and to see how Murdoch and Kulbardi could support them to achieve their dreams through studying at the University.

Having participated in four workshops with Kulbardi during the year leading up to Deadly Dreaming, our students were very keen to get to the University and see what it was like for themselves. They got to experience the laid back nature of University while attending sessions on personal branding, fascial reconstruction and presentations from a number of successful Aboriginal university graduates. While they weren’t learning new skills or being inspired by the presenters, students were making the most of the inflatable games and delicious lunch on offer. It was a great experience for all and certainly helped change some student’s misconceptions around studying at Uni. We are all looking forward to seeing some of our Follow The Dream graduates attending Murdoch University in the future.

Djidi Djidi Girls Academyby Meryl Oltmans, Aboriginal Education Officer

Our girls in the Djidi Djidi Girls Academy have had an amazing start to Term 4. Our dance group is called ‘Bilya Boolyar-ak’ (Bilya means the Wetlands-River - connection to Birth, Boolyar-ak highlights the magic, the spirit within us). The group consists of girls from our Djidi Djidi Girls Academy, as well as a student from All Saints College and East Hamilton Primary School. Heidi Mippy’s vision is to bring Aboriginal girls together celebrating our culture through dance. Rikeeta Walley, an inspiring young lady, came along after school to teach our girls traditional Noongar dances she had choreographed.

One of the highlights for this term was the Opening Dance at the Year 12 Presentation Evening, where families and community members gathered to celebrate the end of our Year 12 students’ journey from high school to following their dreams and their goals.

We also had a visit from Senator Patrick Dodson and a number of local elders, who toured our Djidi Djidi classroom and viewed a showcase of work completed by our Djidi Djidi Academy students.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Mike Gowland and all the team members and students for the amazing Music Extravaganza, ‘Time Machine’ held in Week 4. It was an honour for our girls to open the show; they were dancing with the spirits of our ancestors, that night it was magical.

Joel from the Clontarf Academy was awesome on the Didgeridoo and Anthony stood proud giving the Acknowledgement to Country. From the start to the end the talent of all the students was a tribute to all the hard work that goes on each day to bring this all together.

We will be holding the Djidi Djidi Girls Academy Presentation luncheon in Week 10. Information will be sent home to our families. We would like to thank parents who have supported us throughout this year, allowing us to work with the girls after school and for coming along to the events.

School Watch

School Watch is a partnership between the WA Police and the Department of Education aimed at protecting public schools from vandalism, theft and damage. Every year, criminal damage to schools not only costs Western Australian taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, but also inconveniences students, their families, teachers and local residents.

While the Police and Department work closely together to minimise crime at school premises, you too can help. With more than 650 public schools involved in the School Watch program the community’s role is vital, particularly after school hours and during school holidays. Most importantly, if you live near a public school and see or hear suspicious behaviour immediately contact School Watch Security or the Police.

Who to contactSchool Watch Security T: 1800 177 777orPolice T: 131 444

When you contact School Watch Security, Department security officers can quickly attend schools in the metropolitan area. The Police will attend if called.

How your call helpsYour call could prevent break-ins, vandalism, graffiti or even arson. Ensuring your school is well cared for reflects on your community and contributes to the value of surrounding residential properties, so it’s worth it!
