I am sitting at about 35,000 feet and writing this month’s column.Across this aisle on the airplane is Glen Roter and we are on our wayhome from two days in New York City. No, we didn’t take two daysoff of work to go see a show. We spent two inspiring days at the JewishTheological Seminary interviewing rabbinical students with the hopesthat one will become our new Assistant Rabbi. Yes, it’s been a tiringcouple of days but I leave New York incredibly inspired. Weinterviewed many students and while they may not all be the best fitfor our community, they will all make wonderful rabbis. The truth is,not only will they make great rabbis they will have an incredible impacton the Jewish world. It was a true privilege to spend an hour with eachof these students. Glen and I had great conversations with thesecandidates and I know that they will enrich all of us with their abilitiesand teachings.By the time you read this we may have already had one or two people
visit our congregation - perhaps one or two are still on the way. Thisis an incredibly exciting time for our community and I hope that youhave taken or will take the opportunity to meet our candidates. Imentioned above the tremendous conversations we had with thesefuture rabbis. All too often I read articles in the Jewish press about thedoom and gloom of the Conservative Movement. Do we have ourchallenges? Of course we do. Are there serious issues that we stillneed to grapple with? Indeed. However, I wish that those who havewritten about our demise could have been with us this week. It wasnot only these amazing future leaders, but the numerous congregationsthat we saw in New York conducting similar interviews that wasequally inspiring. Every student we met with was excited about thevarious discussions they were having with people from all over thecountry. Each student and each congregation had energy, and in allhonesty, it was palpable throughout the building. It was an honor tobe part of such an experience. This is an exciting time to be at Beth Shalom. We are leaders in the
Chicagoland area, we are leaders in the Conservative Movement andwe are an amazing place to welcome and help shape a new rabbi. I amhumbled to have the opportunity to help mentor a new rabbi and I amexcited to help lead our communityin the years ahead. It is not simplythe job of one person but it trulydoes take a village. Our searchcommittee has worked hard and aspecial thank you goes to LilyZoberman, the chair of ourcommittee.I look forward to sharing the next
chapter in Beth Shalom’s historywith all of you.

Soulful Educator Training: Three words I thought wouldnever apply to me and yet I find myself engaged in just that. In 2014 I was exposed to a session at my annual cantors’
convention, that year in Florida, entitled Ayeka. I figured, “okayanother education session”, so I went in. It began with somemeditational chant and I thought to myself, “I’ll give in tenminutes and then I will go to the gym”. An hour later I wassmitten. The presenter, Rabbi Aryeh Ben David, was honest andapproachable, serious about his approach to learning but not tooself-impressed. This is the website’s blurb:
Ayeka’s Unique Approach to Jewish Education Founded by Rabbi Aryeh Ben David in 2006, Aryeh sought
a way to enable teachers to engage students with traditionalJewish wisdom in a way that would also foster personalconnection, meaning, and relevance — to open the door tostudents’ deeper engagement with Judaism and exploration oftheir spiritual identities. Jewish education has traditionally been content-focused
and delivered from mind-to-mind, conveying informationcerebrally — the more information, the better. Little to noemphasis has historically been placed on personal engagementwith the subject and its application into human life. Quality ofeducation has been measured by how much and how well astudent knows the subject matter, instead of whether a studentis excited about the learning and feels the learning reaching hisor her soul.Ayeka affirms that the goal of learning Jewish wisdom is
not solely to become a more knowledgeable or smarterperson. The larger goal of learning Jewish wisdom is to affectand change us, to enable us to become better people, living inthe image of God. To do this, we need opportunities to acquireJewish knowledge in such a way that it not only enters ourminds, but also reaches our hearts and everyday lives.“Ayeka”, which means “Where are you?” was created to
provide this opportunity. Ayeka’s Soulful Education TrainingProgram is geared towards educators from every denominationwho want more, utilizing a method of teaching traditionalJewish wisdom that goes deeper and leaves a lasting impact.
I joined the cohort for Soulful Educator training in Februaryand am excited to bring this new approach to some of my classesover the remaining years I have as a teacher here at CBS. Funny that sometimes a door is opened up to you and if you
dare to enter, it can be filled with benefits you may never haveimagined. Who knows, maybe one day I will go to our TefillahYoga on Shabbat too!Hope to see you, and help you find yourself, in our studies.

We are in the process of hiring an assistantrabbi and I want to make sure that those of youin the congregation who would like to share inthe selection process be aware of whatactivities are available to participate in duringthis time. We have candidates coming in tovisit CBS and Northbrook and to see ourcongregation in action. They want to see whatwe do, the activities we have and theparticipation of our congregants. HAPPY PURIM!This year we are not feeding you – We are asking you to feed others!
DID YOU KNOW?THREE MITZVOT OF PURIM
• Listen to the reading of the Megillah of Esther and drown out theevil Haman’s name with a grogger
• Send gifts of food• Give gifts to the needy
How to fulfill the three mitzvot in one easy task, you ask?
We have the answer!
This Purim, when the wicked Haman’s name is called out during theMegillah reading, bring a box of macaroni and cheese or any otheruncooked pasta to use as your grogger! After the service, all food will bedonated to Northfield Food Pantry.
Other ideas for groggers – dried beans, cereal, popcorn kernels, ricepilaf – whatever makes noise when you shake it! PLEASE NO NUTS.
Extra boxes are welcome and needed for the food pantry.Any questions, please contact
Sandee Levin at [email protected](Sponsored by the Social Action Committee)
The Biblical scroll or Megillah of Esther sets forth the classical strugglebetween good and evil. At the same time it is the prototype for the long history ofpersecutions which the Jewish people would suffer. Haman, angry at Mordecai, the Jew, tells King Achashverosh that the Jews pose a threat to the PersianEmpire. A lot (pur) is cast and a date for the massacre of the Jews is set. QueenEsther, Mordecai’s cousin, intervenes and saves her people from destruction.
To remember this triumph Jews were instructed to observe the fourteenth ofthe month of Adar "as the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, andthe month which was turned from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into agood day, that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and ofsending portions to one another, and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22).
We celebrate in the Synagogue with the public reading of Megillat Esther, makingloud sounds with noise-makers (groggers) whenever the name of Haman is read.Children's masquerades and Purim carnivals add to the joyous spirit. As mentionedin the Megillah, it is customary for friends to exchange sweets, usually triangularcookies called Hamantaschen (Haman’s Hats) and to give charity to the poor. Purimis considered a minor holiday, but it is a time of great joy for the Jewish people.
Purim evening will feature two simultaneous readings of the Megillah. One willbe of the Megillah in its entirety. The other - intended especially for children andfamilies - will be abbreviated and accompanied by lots of singing and our annualcostume parade!
The entire Megillah will be read again on Sunday morning as part of themorning minyan.

KERUV CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families
BOB SPECTORShalom Chaverim,As the Passover and Easter holidays are
rapidly approaching I think of themes such asoppression, liberation, and new beginnings. Ialso associate these holidays withreligious/spiritual inspiration and strengthenedidentity development. These last two idealsremind me of a conversation I had with Rebecca,
my youngest daughter, several years ago. It was four years agoon December 24th (my older daughter Rachel’s 14th birthday)and I was admiring my family’s handy work of trimming(decorating) my in-laws’ Christmas tree. While the questionRebecca (age 11 at the time) asked me was specific to Christmasit speaks to one of the many parenting challenges experienced byinterfaith parents.Dear Dr. Bob (just kidding, she is allowed to call me dad):Dad - Is it ok that I really look forward to Christmas,
decorating the tree, enjoying watching all the Christmas moviesthat have been on tv, and poppop’s amazing Christmas Eve andChristmas day meals? My immediate resounding response to her was that of course
it is ok to enjoy and look forward to events that represent lovingfamilies and acts of kindness. She got me thinking about howfragile and confusing religious identity formation can be forchildren. After all, she is being raised in a Jewish family, attendsreligious school and Camp Ramah, and she had started her BatMitzvah training. I knew she was very connected to her‘Jewishness’ yet she felt confused about having feelings that mayseem to be contrary to these beliefs. However, Judaism does nothave the corner on such values as commitment to family andpromoting peace and good will to all people. There is nothing‘unJewish’ about enjoying holiday movies that emphasize theseloving themes; and I believe it is very Jewish to honor her grannyand poppop’s traditions. Passover and Easter are so closely connected. They celebrate
God’s presence in our world. They are also both characterized bymany wonderful traditions many of which are fun andentertaining. As parents, it is our job to help our childrenunderstand that we live in a diverse world and there are manydifferent ways to express our commitment to people and to God.And what’s not Jewish about that?On behalf of our Keruv Interfaith Initiative, I hope our Jewish
families have a wonderful Passover and for those of our non-Jewish family members who celebrate Easter, have a wonderfulEaster. As always, I welcome your comments and feedback. I can be
contacted at [email protected].

Like they say on the radio news stations, “traffic and weather…” February began with a blizzard. I count us lucky that this was ourfirst snow day of the year. Our Sundays are always busy and this wasno exception. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, our Betstudents did not get to participate in the World Wide Wrap withMen’s Club and the Daled class missed our annual conversation withDavid Jacobson at Chicago Jewish Funerals. At the time of thiswriting we were looking at rescheduling both.In other news:The “Cocoa and Donut Shabbat” experience is growing! Naomi
and I run an informal Shabbat chat/service/music fest which isgaining in appeal with older students. We are generally meeting thefirst Shabbat of every month, downstairs, at 10:45am.Our kindergarten, first and second grades participated in our Tu
B’Shevat Ice Cream Seder earlier this month. The seasons areconnected to four different flavors. Our teachers share the year-roundgifts we receive from trees. Gratitude every day for what we have isthe underlying message. February is also Jewish Disabilities Awareness month. Aleph and Bet
students took part in a presentation by Keshet, our nearby resource forchildren with special needs. Their mission reads: Keshet is the premierprovider of educational, recreational, vocational and social programs forindividuals with intellectual disabilities operating according to traditionalJewish values. What an amazing February we have had in the Beth ShalomYouth Department! First off, I would like to thank everyone who helped with our
Hamantashen for Hunger benefit. Together we were able to raise over$2,000 for Mazon: A Jewish Response for Hunger. The USY’ersworked incredibly hard on this project, and it’s really nice to see allof the hard work pay off.February kicked off with CBS USY hosting a monkey show for
the entire region. We had over 43 high schoolers in attendance, andgot many compliments on our youth lounge and high school program. We also had our annual Kadima/USY ski trip to the Wisconsin Dells. It was cold but a fun time for everyone!! I would also like to take a moment to congratulate Past USY
President Zach Sandler who was honored as our youth of the yearthis past month. Zach donated a lot of time his Senior year to leadingour USY chapter and helping in the religious school, and it was anhonor well deserved. Lastly, as April nears, Passover comes as well. Passover has
always been a time to be with family for me. I wanted to take thistime to thank everyone at Beth Shalom for being my family inChicago. This synagogue is a very warm and welcoming place, andI can’t imagine a better community to be a part of. I want to wisheveryone a great Passover, and look forward to many more youthprograms in the near future!

ISRAEL IN DEPTH: What You Need to Know Now
The events of Summer 2014 underscore the importance of keeping informed. Even when Hamas rockets are not flying and the IDF is not engaged in acve combat, Israel is a central part of our lives, and each of us needs to take steps to understand the issues beyond the headlines. The series will focus on important issues on Israel’s agenda, offering insights and ideas from mulple perspecves in a discussion-based format. Each session will begin with a brief current events update. All sessions will be taught by Carl Schrag and will take place at 10am, immediately following the Men’s Club Breakfast.
Sunday, March 15, 2015 Nakba or Independence Day? Exploring Multiple Narratives
Millions of people view the establishment of Israel as al-Nakba, or “the catastrophe.” We’ll consider different narraves about the events before and a!er Israel gained independence and use the 1948 War of Independence as a lens to understand different views on current events.
You’ll benefit most if you attend all 5 sessions but drop-ins are welcome! This calss is co-sponsored by The CBS University/Adult Education, Men’s Club, Israel Committee and Youth
CBS High School students wishing to earn scholarship toward an approved trip to Israel by a"ending these sessions should contact Ma" Rissien ([email protected]) or Leann Blue ([email protected])
