    INTRODUCTION.

CBSE has introduced new grading Pattern for class 10 students. Students of class IX and X

will be evaluated on a 9 -point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis ofboth formative and summative assessments, will correspond to a range of marks as

    indicated below:

    A1 95 and above

    A2 90 to 94

    A3 85 to 89

    B1 80 to 84

    B2 70 to 79

    C1 60 to 69

    C2 50 to 59

    C3 33 to 49

    D Less than 33

E1 (needs improvement) and E2 (unsatisfactory) are the last two grades.

Grading system based on continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) will be done in

two terms (April-September, October-March). In a year, the school will conduct four

    formative and two summative assessments.

In the first term, there will be two formative assessments of 10% each and single summative

assessment of 20%. In the second term also a similar format will be adopted. Formative

assessment will carry 40% marks and summative assessment 60% marks.

CBSE also plans to offer an aptitude test that will be available by February 2010. By the time

a student reaches Class XI, he/she would have undertaken the aptitude test twice, once at the

end of Class IX and then at the end of Class X.

Thus, the aim of the study is to find out whether this step taken by the C.B.S.E. Board is

beneficial for the students or not and in case it is beneficial then how many people are there

who take it to be fair enough.

Also its aim is to know the number of people, be it the teachers, the students, parents are they

    in its favor or not.

    OBJECTIVES

The specific aspects to study would be:

    1) To find out the most decisive factors in giving rise to this grading system.

    2) To know the a ttitude of students towards this system.

    3) To analyse the a ttitude of parents towards this system.

    4) To know whether this system has a positive impact or not?

    5) To know its shortcomings and the future prospects of this system.6) To know is there a dire need to improve the quality of teaching in order to make this initiative

    a huge success.

    7) Introducing a new system of evaluation may infuse high stress levels among the s tudents

since they would be judged upon their every move.

    8) It will also see that, will th e new initiatives taken b y the CBSE Board ensure holistic growth of

    students?

    9) Could this possibly leave the students academically unprepared for the rigor of college and

    undergraduate education?

    RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The planned study will be based both on fieldwork (interviews with students, parents etc., a

list of the interviewed persons is available in appendix) and secondary information has also

    been made available.

    TYPE OF RESEARCH:

As this project deals with assessing the new grading system introduced by the cbse board andits impact on the students, parents, teachers and the education system as a whole, so it pertains

    to a Descriptive Research.

Descriptive research or statistical research provides the data about the population or universe

being studied. But it can only describe the who, what, when, where and how of a situation,

not what caused it. Thus, descriptive research is used when the objective is to provide a

systematic description that is as factual and accurate as possible.

    RESEARCH DESIGN:

The most commonly types of descriptive research designs are:

    1) Observation;

    2) Surveys.

In this project I have used some fragments of both observation as well as the survey method as

it ensures more reliability than the other techniques.

The survey technique involves the collection of primary data about subjects, usually by

    selecting.

    INTERVIEWS:

The main objective of this study is to know that the CBSE board will now allow students who

do not clear classes IX and X three more attempts to make the grade. And if they fail to do so,

the board is considering taking into account their performance in extracurricular activities and
