Miranda Cosgrove

Miranda Taylor Cosgrove (born May 14, 1993) is anAmerican actress and singer. Her career began at the ageof three, when she appeared in television commercials.Her film debut came in 2003, when she played SummerHathaway in School of Rock. She appeared in a numberof minor television roles over several years before comingto prominence as Megan Parker on the Nickelodeon TVseries Drake & Josh. A few years later, she landed therole of Carly Shay, the lead character in the NickelodeonTV series iCarly.As of May 2010, Cosgrove earned $180,000 per episodeof iCarly, making her the second-highest-paid child staron television.[3] She was listed in the 2012 edition ofGuinness World Records as the highest paid child ac-tress for iCarly.[4] Following the success of iCarly, asoundtrack album was released in June 2008, in whichshe performed four songs. Her debut album, Sparks Fly,was released on April 27, 2010.

1.1 Early life

Cosgrove was born in Los Angeles, California, to Tom,who owns a dry-cleaning business,[5] and Chris (neCasey), a homemaker.[5] She is of English, Irish, andFrench descent.[6] At the age of three, she was discoveredby a talent agent[5] while singing and dancing at the LosAngeles restaurant Taste of L.A.[7] Cosgrove stated thatwhen the agent approached her and her mother for model-ing, she had never really thought of being an actress andwas lucky.[8] After choosing to take the offer, she ap-peared in television commercials for McDonalds[9] andMello Yello,[9] and also modeled.[10] At the age of seven,she decided that she loved doing it and auditioned fortheater and television roles.[8]

1.2.1 20012007: Career beginnings, filmdebut, and Drake & Josh

Cosgroves first television appearance (aside from com-mercials) was in 2001 as the voice of 5-year-old LanaLang in the pilot episode of Smallville. Cosgrove thenmade her film debut with the 2003 film School of Rock.In the movie, she played Summer Hathaway, a young girlwith great ambition and discipline who finds herself ad-justing to the free-spirited nature of the new teacher bybecoming band manager of the classrooms rock band.School of Rock was both a box office hit, grossing over$131,282,949 worldwide,[11] and critical success, receiv-ing a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.[12] Cosgrovesacting on the film was praised, with David Ansen ofNewsweek describing it as spot on.[13] She said of theexperience of working with Jack Black: The first week itwas like, 'Oh, my God, thats Jack Black,' but two weekslater it was fine. Hes really funny. Sometimes the di-rector would say, 'Jack, you can't make them laugh somuch.'"[14] She cited the scene of trying to sing badly asvery difficult. Cosgrove stated that I got a 45-minutelesson from Jim O'Rourke of Sonic Youth on how tosing badly. I've been taking singing lessons for aboutfive years, so getting to sing badly was new. The direc-tor kept saying, 'Try to sing even worse, Miranda,' so itwas weird.[9] She is grateful she was in School of Rock,as it exposed her to classic rock songs she was unfamil-iar with. After the movie, said Cosgrove, I discoveredLed Zeppelin and I've taken up the electric guitar.[9]

Cosgrove soon landed her first major role in a televi-sion series when she was awarded a main role in theNickelodeon series Drake & Josh, alongside Drake Belland Josh Peck. In the series, she portrayed Megan Parker,the mischievous younger sister of the title characters. Theshow made its debut on January 11, 2004 and drew posi-tive responses in ratings. Cosgrove said of Drake & Josh,Its like a big family. We know each other so well, noth-ing is embarrassing anymore...Its really comfortable, andits really fun.[15] While on the show, she was able to de-velop a partnership with Dan Schneider, known for pro-ducing various Nickelodeon shows such as Zoey 101, TheAmanda Show, Kenan & Kel, and All That. mated series Whats New, Scooby-Doo?, as well as guest-starring in a season five episode of Grounded For Life,portraying the character of Jessica.[16]

In 2005, Cosgrove was awarded the role of 'Munch' in theDisney Channel film Here Comes Peter Cottontail: TheMovie. In the film, Cosgrove portrays a female mousewho is rescued from a hawk by Junior and Flutter, andsubsequently comes along for the adventure that the char-acters must take.[17] Cosgrove also guest-starred on twoepisodes of the animated comedy, Lilo & Stitch: The Se-ries. The television series, which aired on Disney, is aspin-off of the original film, Lilo & Stitch. Cosgrove wasalso rewarded her second major role in a theatrical film,when she cast alongside Drake & Josh co-star Drake Bellin the comedy film Yours, Mine and Ours, in which sheportrayed the character Joni;[18][19] the film performedmildly at the box office. Yours, Mine and Ours opened atnumber three, with an opening weekend of $17,461,108in the US.[20] Cosgrove later starred in her third theatricalrelease, Keeping Up with the Steins, which was released togenerally negative reviews from critics. The film was alsoa failure at the box office.[21][22][23] She also earned a rolein the straight-to-DVD film The Wild Stallion.

1.2.2 20072009: iCarly and music begin-nings

Cosgrove kicked off 2007 by appearing in severalNickelodeon television series. The first of these appear-ances was in Zoey 101, which starred Jamie Lynn Spearsand Victoria Justice. Cosgrove later guest starred on anepisode of Unfabulous, which starred Emma Roberts.In the episode, Cosgrove guest starred as a sweet girlnamed Cosmina. 2007 saw the end of Drake & Josh, withthe final episode airing on September 16, 2007. How-ever, Cosgrove was already in the works of starring inher own series, titled iCarly, a teen sitcom starring Cos-grove, Jennette McCurdy, and Nathan Kress, released onSeptember 8, 2007.Schneider tailored iCarly around the interest young peo-ple have in the internet. A unique part of this show is thefact that viewers may submit their own videos and alsobe included in the show. Cosgrove said of the audienceparticipation aspect, When I first heard about the idea,I thought it was so cool. If I were home and watchingTV, I'd want to send in a video.[24] By the summer of2008, the show was the third highest rated in the 914demographic. The iCarly Saves TV special extendedepisode, became the most-viewed entertainment show oncable TV in June 2008.[9]

Cosgroves debut as a recording artist began with theiCarly theme song "Leave It All to Me". The song fea-tures her former Drake & Josh castmate Drake Bell andis written by Michael Corcoran, one of Bells band mem-bers. It was released as a single in December 2007through digital distribution[25] and eventually peaked

at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100.[26] The al-bum debuted at number one on the Billboard Kid Al-bums chart.[27] In June 2008, Columbia Records releasedthe iCarly soundtrack, which featured four songs per-formed by Cosgrove (Leave It All to Me, "Stay MyBaby", "About You Now", and Headphones On).[28]Critical reception for her performance was positive.Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic stated that Cos-grove proved herself to be an appealingly spunky singerand the good tunes she performed "[made] the most ofher girlish talents.[28] However, Erlewine noted that thefocus [was] not on her because of other artists, but sherather "[blended] in the mix.[28] The following promo-tional single Stay My Baby failed to reach the charts,but About You Now reached number 47 on the Hot 100in January 2009, becoming her most successful single todate.[29]

Cosgrove became one of MTVs Female Pop Rookiesof 2009.[30] In December 2008, a cover of the holidaysong "Christmas Wrapping" was released to promote thehour-long special Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh.[31] OnFebruary 3, 2009, Cosgrove released her first solo record-ing, the extended play About You Now, exclusively onthe iTunes Store.[32] The extended play featured the ti-tle track, a remix of it, and a remix of Stay My Baby,as well as two new songs, F.Y.I. and Party Girl.[32] Topromote the 2009 animated film Cloudy with a Chance ofMeatballs, Columbia Records released a single entitledRaining Sunshine with an accompanying music videoin August 2009.[33]

Since July 2008, plans for a debut album have beenactive.[34] In an interview with MTV News, Cosgrove dis-cussed the forthcoming album.[34] Cosgrove reported tobe co-writing and getting really into the album, con-trasting with the iCarly soundtrack in which she just

picked songs that meant a lot to [her], that [she] reallyliked.[34] She also described the album as still pop rockfun in comparison to her previous work on the iCarlysoundtrack, though a little more mature.[34] Themes forthe album are "love songs and just fun songs about hang-ing out with your girlfriends.[34] When releasing AboutYou Now, Cosgrove further elaborated on the albumsconcepts.[35]

1.2.3 20102012: Debut album, tour, andiCarly final seasons

In 2009 Cosgrove worked with songwriters The Matrix,Dr. Luke, Max Martin,[35] Leah Haywood, and DanielJames, for his debut studio album. She said that most ofthe songs are fun, pop, rock-girl empowerment.[35] Shenoted that theres one ballad thats kind of sad and thatits called 'What Are You Waiting For?' Its about a girlwho likes a guy [but he doesn't feel the same way].[35]She added that it is something shes experienced in herown life: I definitely have guys that I'm friends withthat I have a crush on, and you don't want to ruin thefriendship.[35] The album was released in April 2010,[36]and the first single from her album, "Kissin' U", was pre-miered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show on March 12, 2010,and released to iTunes on March 23, 2010.[37] The album,titled Sparks Fly, debuted and peaked at number 8 on theUS Billboard 200 chart.She signed with skin care and cosmetics companyNeutrogena on February 12, 2010, as an ambassador.[38]On March 17, 2010, it was reported that Cosgrove hadsigned a deal, reportedly in the low- to mid-seven-figurerange to do 26 additional episodes of iCarly.[39] Cos-grove voiced Margo in Universal Studios' 3-D computeranimated feature DespicableMe, released in July 2010. InJanuary 2011, Cosgrove revealed that her new EP wouldbe titled High Maintenance,[40] and also released the firstsingle from the same. The song, titled "Dancing Crazy",

was written by Max Martin, Shellback, and Avril Lav-igne, and produced by Martin and Shellback.[41] Withthree weeks of airplay, the song debuted at number 40on the US Billboard Adult Pop Songs.[40]

On January 24, 2011 she released her debut tour, DancingCrazy Tour, visiting North America, the trek will sup-port her first studio album, Sparks Fly. The tour beganin Missouri and travel throughout the United States andended in Ohio. Cosgrove continued the tour into the sum-mer to promote her second EP, High Maintenance.[42]On July 15, 2011 the tour continued with a new title,Dancing Crazy Summer Tour, traveled the United Statesand Canada and performed at music festivals and statefairs.On August 11, 2011, Cosgrove broke her ankle in a tourbus accident on Interstate 70 near Vandalia, Illinois, re-sulting in the cancellation of her U.S. tour dates.[43][44]In June 2013, Cosgrove and her mother filed a lawsuitat the Illinois federal court against the driver and trans-portation companies, suing for unspecified damages of$50,000 each while claiming that the crash could havebeen prevented.[45][46] In October 2014, Cosgrove filedlegal papers stating the crash cost her about $2.5 mil-lion due to cancellation of the remaining shows and theinjuries caused her to lose contracts with Neutrogena,and being dropped from the Sony record label, ColumbiaRecords.[47]

On January 24, 2012 Cosgrove released her secondiCarly's soundtrack, iSoundtrack II, produced by Dr.Luke.[48] On May 17, 2012, it was announced that theshows seventh season was the last for iCarly.[49] The se-ries finale, "iGoodbye", aired on November 23, 2012.

1.2.4 2013present: Focus on acting

On February 15, 2013, it was announced that Cosgrovewould be starring as Evie in Girlfriend in a Coma, a televi-sion series for which NBC had ordered a pilot. The pilotwas not ordered to series.[50] Cosgrove was scheduled toplay the daughter of the mother Karen, who wakes up af-ter a nearly twenty-year-long coma and finds out she has adaughter;[51] Cosgrove again voiced Margo in DespicableMe 2 in 2013. She also starred with her Drake & Josh co-star Drake Bell in the animated film AMouse Tale, whichwas released on DVD and through video-on-demand out-lets on February 10, 2015.[52] Cosgrove also appeared inthe horror film The Intruders with Austin Butler. She por-trayed the role of Rose. The film was released on re-leased on February 24, 2015 on DVD and on video ondemand.[53] In May 2015, Cosgrove was cast in the NBCcomedy pilot Crowded, created by Suzanne Martin withexecutive producer Sean Hayes.[54] The pilot was orderedto series on May 7, 2015.[55]

1.3 Charity work

Cosgrove is an active supporter of St. Jude ChildrensResearch Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.[56] She alsovisits other childrens hospitals and considers EducationThrough Music one of her favorite charities.[57] She is anational spokesperson for Light the Night Walk, an or-ganization that creates awareness for blood cancer andleukemia.[58]

1.4 Personal life

Cosgrove is an only child and was homeschooled fromsixth grade onwards.[1][59]

In fall of 2012, Cosgrove started attending the Universityof Southern California and has cited her aspirations ofmajoring in theater or writing.[1][60][61] She made the de-cision to attend school there to be able to continue act-ing and to stay near her family.[61] In a November 2012interview with Larry King, she stated that she would bemajoring in film.[62]

Jennette Michelle Faye McCurdy[3] (born June 26,1992) is an American actress, screenwriter, producer,singer, and songwriter.[4] She is known for her role as SamPuckett on the Nickelodeon sitcom iCarly and its spin-offseries Sam & Cat. She has also appeared in a numberof television series, including Victorious, Zoey 101, TrueJackson VP, Malcolm in the Middle, and Lincoln Heightsand has also produced, written, and starred in her ownonline series Whats Next for Sarah?. Since May 2015,she has starred in the Netflix / City series Between.

2.1 Early life

McCurdy was born in Long Beach, California and grewup in Garden Grove, California.[5] She has three olderbrothers named Marcus, Scott, and Dustin. She is ofDutch, French, Irish, Italian, and Swedish heritage.[3][6]She gained interest in acting upon watching HarrisonFord in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope after hermother recovered from breast cancer.[7]

2.2 Career

2.2.1 Acting

McCurdy started her acting career in 2000 at the age ofeight on MADtv.[8] Since then she appeared in televisionseries, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Malcolmin the Middle, Lincoln Heights, Will & Grace, The Pen-guins of Madagascar, Zoey 101, True Jackson, VP, Lawand Order SVU, Medium, Judging Amy, The Inside, KarenSisco, Over There, and Close to Home. In 2003, she hadthe chance to act with her inspiration, Harrison Ford, inthe film Hollywood Homicide. In 2005, she was nomi-nated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in aTelevision Series Guest Starring Young Actress for herperformance in Strong Medicine as Hailey Campos. Shehas also appeared in several commercials, such as one forSprint and a public service announcement on crossing theroad safely.From 2007 to 2012, she had a starring role in the Nick-

elodeon TV series iCarly as Sam Puckett. In 2008, shewas nominated for a Young Artist Award for her workon iCarly and her performance as Dory Sorenson in theTV movie The Last Day of Summer. She played Berthain Fred: The Movie, a movie based on a YouTube se-ries about Fred Figglehorn. She starred alongside ArianaGrande in the Nickelodeon series Sam & Cat, reprisingher role as Sam Puckett, with Grande reprising her roleas Cat Valentine. The series plot centers on the girlsbecoming roommates and starting their own babysittingbusiness. It premiered on June 8, 2013 and ended on July17, 2014.McCurdy is starring in the thriller drama series Between,being produced by City Canada and Netflix. 2.2.2 Screenwriting and producing

On August 13, 2014, McCurdy launched the online showWhats Next for Sarah?. She serves as the star of the seriesas well as the writer of the show, along with duties asexecutive producer and editor. She says that the show isbased loosely on her life and that the character she plays,Sarah Bronson, is based on her.[10][11][12][13]

2.2.3 Music

In June 2008, McCurdy announced on her official web-site that she was working on her debut album. The firstsingle, So Close, was released on March 10, 2009.[14]The second single, Homeless Heart, was released onMay 19.[15] The song was released in honor of McCurdysrecently deceased friend Cody Waters, who died at theage of nine from brain cancer, and 20% of the proceedswere donated to the Cody Waters Foundation.[16] She metWaters through St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.In mid-2009, McCurdy signed with country music labelCapitol Records Nashville.[17]

Capitol Nashville releasedan EP on August 17, 2010, which included Not ThatFar Away and three new songs: Stronger, Put YourArms Around Someone, and Break Your Heart. TheiTunes version included Me with You as a bonus track.Stronger was later included on Now Thats What I CallMusic! Vol. 35, released on August 31, 2010.[19]

McCurdys second single, "Generation Love", was re-leased as a digital download on March 22, 2011,[20] fol-lowed by its release to radio April 25, 2011.[21] Capi-tol Nashville released McCurdys self-named seven-trackEP on February 8, 2012[22] at clothing retailer Justice.[23]The full-length, ten-track edition was released to iTuneson June 5, 2012 and is her first full-length album.On July 11, 2012, Fanlala released an interview withMcCurdy in which she confirmed that she has since leftCapitol Records Nashville, saying, I'm kind of betweenprojects right now. I actually just left Capitol Records re-cently. I'm really just deciding what else I want to do next.Right now I'm working on my new show, and I'm just fig-uring out where I should take my music from here.[24]

On July 31, 2012, How to Rock released an interview withMcCurdy, in which she talked about her acting and musiccareers.[25] A follow-up interview was released on August8, in which McCurdy reflects on her music career.[26][27]

2.2.4 Writing

Starting in 2011, McCurdy began writing articles in theWall Street Journal. She has written a total of eight arti-cles for the paper, on various topics ranging from ShirleyTemple[28] to body shaming and the corporate culture ofsmoke and mirrors.[29] She is a columnist for Seventeenmagazine.[30][31] She has also written for The HuffingtonPost.[32]

2.3 Personal life

McCurdy composed an article titled Off-Camera, MyMoms Fight With Cancer, that was published in theWall Street Journal on June 11, 2011. It describes in de-tail her mother Debras on-going battle with cancer andhow her family is coping with the situation. The articlealso features tips from McCurdy on living with such asituation.[33] On September 20, 2013, her mother diedafter battling cancer for 17 years.[34]

McCurdy briefly dated NBA player Andre Drummond inSeptember 2013.[35][36] In March 2014, three personalphotos of McCurdy were leaked onto the internet.[37] Mc-Curdy said that the pictures were leaked by Drummondas he had been the only recipient, but Drummond deniedleaking the photos.[38][39]

McCurdy, along with former iCarly co-star and closefriend Miranda Cosgrove, were noticeably absent fromthe 2014 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in an appar-ent boycott where Sam & Cat won Favorite Show andAriana Grande won Best Actress, which McCurdy wasalso nominated for. In explaining her absence, McCurdystated that Nickelodeon put her in an uncomfortable,compromising, unfair situation where she had to lookout for herself. She said the leaked photos were not anissue.[40] Among various rumors were that McCurdy andGrande were having problems with the network over theirrespective salaries, with McCurdy accusing Nickelodeonof paying Grande more money, while Grande denied this.The network placed Sam & Cat into hiatus. The networkinitially stated that the hiatus was planned and that theseries was not cancelled.[41]

On July 13, 2014, Nickelodeon announced that, af-ter only one season, Sam & Cat was cancelled.[42] Formonths in between, rumors of a feud between Grandeand McCurdy ran high, but these were later proven tobe false.[43][44] The rumors included the possibility thatMcCurdy was spoofing Grande and their feud with thecharacter of Gloriana in her online series Whats Nextfor Sarah?, but McCurdy later stated this was dramat-ically exaggerated for comedic reasons.[45] In an inter-view on Entertainment Pop, McCurdy mentioned that shelater made up with Grande.[44] She was also among thosewho gave Grande her condolences when her grandfatherdied.[46]

Nathan Kress

Nathan Karl Kress (born November 18, 1992) is anAmerican actor, director, and former professional childmodel. Kress has acted since the age of three and isknown for his role as Freddie Benson on the Nickelodeontelevision series iCarly.In 2014, he co-starred in his first major film, Into theStorm, and directed the Henry Danger episode, CavedIn.[1]

3.1 Early life

Kress was born on November 18, 1992, in Glendale,California.[2][3] He has two older brothers, Andrewand Kevin, neither of whom are involved in showbusiness.[4][5]

Kress began his professional career at the age of fourwhen he displayed a natural talent for memorizing andre-enacting the shows he saw on television, promptinghis mother to take him to an open "cattle call" showcasewhere he was quickly signed with a talent agent.[4][5][6]Over the next three years, Kress modeled for various printadvertisements, as well as performing in numerous com-mercials and voice-over roles; the most notable of whichwas his dual role as the voices of Easy and Tough Pupin the 1998 feature film Babe: Pig in the City.[3][5][6][7][8]At the age of six, he decided to take a break from act-ing and return to regular school, where he led a relativelynormal life for the next five years until deciding to re-turn to acting professionally at the age of eleven.[5][6][7]

3.2 Career

At the age of eleven, Kress was cast in the lead role asThe Emperor in a school production of The EmperorsNew Clothes.[5] The role rekindled his interest in perform-ing, and at the end of his fifth grade school year, he askedhis parents if he could be home-schooled so he could re-turn to acting.[5][7] A mutual friend of Kress from schoolput him in touch with an agent, and after attending a sum-mer acting boot camp, Kress was soon going on realprofessional auditions once again.[5][6][7]

In April 2005, Kress made his first live television ap-pearance since returning to acting in a comedy sketchon Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he played a young SimonCowell of American Idol, and would continue to appearin various comedy sketches on the show a total of 5 timesover the next year.[3][9] Kress continued to land steadywork over the next two years, appearing in guest-starringroles on dramatic series such as House M.D., Standoff,and Without a Trace as well as the Disney Channel com-edy series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.[3][4][9][10] Kressalso appeared in several short films including Pickled,Magnus, Inc., and Bag, for which he was awarded a 168Film Festival Jury Award for his portrayal of a small-frydrug dealer with a conscience.[5][9][11] In addition to live-action roles, Kress continued to work as a voice-actor,lending his voice to various characters in the animatedfeature film Chicken Little and on the Nickelodeon ani-mated series Shuriken School.[9]

In February 2006, Kress landed a small role on the popu-lar Nickelodeon family series Drake & Josh.[3][4][5][6][12]He played the role of Toplin, a geeky kid at a birth-day party with a crush on Drake and Joshs younger sis-ter Megan Parker (played by Miranda Cosgrove) in theepisode Battle of Panthatar.[4][6][9] Kress did not know itat the time, but this small role would lead to an opportu-nity that would catapult him to stardom.[4][5][6][13] Whilefilming his scenes for Drake & Josh, television show cre-ator and executive producer Dan Schneider took an in-terest in him and called him over to talk with him and tointroduce him to some network executives.[3][5][6] At thetime, Schneider was developing a new series for Nick-elodeon, and was on the lookout for someone to play oneof the lead roles in the untitled project, which would laterbecome known as iCarly.[5][6][12]

The role of Toplin was similar to a character namedFreddie that Schneider was looking to cast oniCarly.[4][5][6] Schneider had been so impressed withKress performance that he remembered him, and about6 months after filming his small role on Drake and Josh,Kress was called in to audition for the role of Freddieshortly after his fourteenth birthday.[4][5][6] After severalrounds of auditions, Kress was invited back for a screentest with Miranda Cosgrove and Jennette McCurdy and acouple of days later he was notified that he had landed the
