The Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association is anational Trade Contractor’s Association. It has existed inone form or another since the 1920’s, and wasincorporated under a Dominion Charter in 1961. In itsinception it recognized the Sprinkler Industry as aContracting Industry separate from any other trade.Voting membership, manufacturers, suppliers andsubscribers are brought into the Association. C.A.S.A.promotes, defends, enhances and improves thebusiness of installing and manufacturing the sprinklerdevices and systems. In doing so, the Association worksclosely with Fire and Building Officials, Architects andothers for the advancement of the automatic sprinklerart as applied to the conservation of life and propertyfrom fire. Whether we look at our own industry or our economy here inCanada, we have much to be grateful for. With the unrest around theworld, Canada remains certainly one of the most stable, if not thebest, place to live and work. For the Sprinkler Industry, 2010certainly ended on a high note. The fourth quarter was a pleasantsurprise as we moved from the -4 per cent range in Q3 to a +.84per cent by the end of December in terms of manhours. It was oneof the best fourth quarters we have seen in over 4 years. We havealso seen modest gains in CASA market share nationally.

It also appears what I wrote back in early 2008, proved to be truefor 2010 for the Province of Ontario. That is to say "as a slowdownin the general ICI Construction market takes place, new residentialrequirements from high-rise residential construction will fill the voidand soften any down turn for the Sprinkler Industry".

With actual growth in Atlantic Canada and in particular ourmembers in New Brunswick, and the size of high-rise residentialmarkets in Southern Ontario, we have now seen 2010 end virtuallyflat to 2009.

Similarly, head shipments into Canada while down on peak, enjoyeda strong Q4 in 2010. Of special note was residential sprinkler headsin Canada with the best quarter for residential heads we have seenagain in 4 years.

While Canada has enjoyed a steady increase in residential salessince the late 1990's, we saw the huge Ontario market with 25-30thousand high-rise residential units in the GTA alone come into themarket by way of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) requirements ofApril 10, 2010, that required all high-rise residential dwellings to befully sprinklered. This significant code change that was promised toCASA and our partners 2 years ago, translated into installations inQ4 of 2010. The good news is that the condo market remains strongin most urban areas of the country and is being forecast to staythat way.

As we have experienced before, Canada has regional economicvariances. It is Atlantic Canada's turn to enjoy a robust and everimproving market for construction and the large number of

occupancies requiring Fire Sprinklers today translates into anincrease in Sprinkler manhours while the rest of the countrybottoms out from 2 years of negative results on a year over yearbasis.

But all things in perspective, the recessionary results of the last twoyears for the Sprinkler Industry coming off the tremendous peaksof 2008, are currently at the levels of 2006. If in fact we havebottomed out and continue to see improvement in manhours. TheCanadian Sprinkler market is poised to move back to levels closerto 2008 in the next few years. That would make 2009 the worstyear of the recession, as 2010 is now in with slightly higher hours.

With all this good news, we can not loose sight of the fact that thereis a huge vested interest in maintaining the status quo for severalsectors of the Building Industry, and we pose a threat to that. Thisbecomes evident in our efforts to see Sprinklers included inresidential occupancies of all types. Whether it be at the NBCC orthe Provincial Codes levels, CASA staff are remaining diligent andpersistent at making sure the facts and record of Sprinklerperformance are clearly represented and understood.

There should be some positive news later this year on additionaloccupancies requiring Fire Sprinklers both in the West and also theEast, as well as, some retro-fit requirements. This all bodes well forfurther growth of the market in Canada, and supports the view thatthe best is yet to come.

Happy New Year! The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum reports, employers who don't regularly hire apprentices say they need moreinformation about the supports available to help them hire andretain apprentices, especially as they consider whetherapprenticeship can be an effective part of their business long-termHR plans.

Data shows that individuals who complete apprenticeship trainingenjoy employment outcomes, enhanced earning potential, increased job security and higher levels of job satisfaction thancounterparts who don't pursue certification. A report will bereleased in late January that shows certified completers earn higherannual wages and are more likely to hold a permanent job in a fieldrelated to their training.

As Dan wrote late in 2010, with many skilled workers nearingretirement, it is becoming increasing urgent for employers to findnew talent even as immigration becomes the major source of labourforce growth. This is one of our greatest challenges we facepresently and into the future as our economy continues tostrengthen. To attract this much sot after generation and newimmigrants to our trade, we must understand their needs, as in;goals, desired life styles (both at work and away), what motivatesthem, family values, monetary stresses (i.e.; mortgages, etc...),etc... We must continue to monitor, upgrade and update theprogram's curriculum and delivery styles or combinations ofdelivery styles (Classroom, correspondence, Online, jobsite, etc…).Open the lines of communication between the training provider, employer, jobsite journey persons/foremen and most importantlythe apprentices.

This past spring my wife and I were presented with an opportunityto meet with a contingent representing the UA/government training

authority, technical committee, and sprinkler fitting union fromQueensland Australia. Vancouver was their last stop on a journeythat took them on a world wind tour to the six cities' that recordedthe largest multi death fire in the past twenty years in NorthAmerica. The evenings table talk included, the working (Sprinklerfitting) climate in BC/Canada, opportunities to enter anapprenticeship in sprinkler fitter (both union and non-union),Agencies and their facilities available for training for our apprenticesand upgrading our journey persons (both union and non-union),length of term, ratios of apprentices to journey persons on a jobsites and currently allowed for companies, our ability to attract newtrades people, installation materials used both in residential, commercial and industrial job sites, Canadian, provincial, regional, city building/fire codes. We talked at great lengths of theunion/non-union work force in B.C.

All in all it was a very informative and enjoyable evening for bothparties. Though coming from worlds apart our common groundurgency appeared to be our aging work force and how to meet theneeded skilled workforce when our job sites demand it. We bothstrongly believe that the apprenticeship training in the SprinklerIndustry in Canada and in Queensland is amongst the leaders inthe trades in our two countries.

I'm looking forward to meeting and working with the memberssitting on the various JTAC boards and folks in the Fire SprinklerIndustry across the country in the coming year.

Update on Antifreeze Systems TIA ProposalsFrom NFSA e-Tech Bulletin

The Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) to NFPA 13, 13R and 13Dissued by the NFPA Standards Council in August of 2010 effectivelybanned the use of antifreeze in new dwelling units. Those TIAs failedto address the use of antifreeze in other types of occupancies, andalso provided no restrictions or guidance on the use of antifreeze inexisting systems. NFPA staff attempted to provide its own guidancethrough the issuance of an updated Fire Safety Alert in that samemonth, which recommended that existing systems be limited to amaximum concentration by volume of 50 per cent glycerin or 40 percent propylene glycol, and that only factory premixed solutions beused to ensure adequate mixing.

The NFPA sprinkler committees and the NFPA Committee onInspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water Based Fire ProtectionSystems have now had time to study the matter, review the relevantresearch, and propose their own Tentative Interim Amendments tothe NFPA standards. Balloting within the committees has beencompleted, and a new series of TIAs are going forward to the NFPAStandards Council for consideration and possible issuance at itsmeeting at the end of February.

Four TIAs have achieved the necessary three-fourths (75%)affirmative vote of their respective committees for both technicalcontent and emergency nature and will be proceeding to theStandards Council, one each for NFPA 13D (TIA 1012), NFPA 13R (TIA1013), NFPA 13 (TIA 1015) and NFPA 25 (TIA 1014). The TIAs wouldresult in the addition of a definition of the term "premixed antifreezesolution" along with limitations for sprinkler systems in both new andexisting systems in all types of occupancies. While the TIAs consist ofmany pages of deleted and added text, the essence of where they endup can be summarized as follows:

The definition…

"Premixed Antifreeze Solution. A mixture of an antifreeze materialwith water that is prepared by the manufacturer with a quality controlprocedure in place that ensures that the antifreeze solution remains

homogeneous."

For new systems…• Antifreeze solutions would be limited to premixed solutions of

glycerin at a maximum concentration of 48 per cent by volume,or propylene glycol at a maximum concentration of 38 per centby volume. The antifreeze manufacturers would be required toprovide a certificate indicating the type, concentration by volumeand freezing point.

• Other premixed solutions would be permitted for use if speciallylisted, including existing solutions listed for use with ESFRsystems.

For existing systems…• Antifreeze solutions would be limited to solutions of glycerin at

a maximum concentration of 50 per cent by volume, orpropylene glycol at a maximum concentration of 40 per cent byvolume.

• Annually, antifreeze solutions would be tested. If any sample ofthe existing solution is in excess of the permitted concentrations,or if the type of antifreeze in the system cannot be reliablydetermined, the system would be required to be drainedcompletely and refilled with a new acceptable solution. If aconcentration greater than what is currently acceptable isneeded to prevent freezing, alternative methods of preventingthe pipe from freezing must be employed.

• For NFPA 25, newly introduced solutions would be limited topremixed solutions of glycerin at a maximum concentration of 48per cent by volume, or propylene glycol at a maximumconcentration of 38 per cent by volume. For NFPA 13D, newlyintroduced solutions could include premixed solutions of glycerinat a maximum concentration of 50 per cent by volume, orpropylene glycol at a maximum concentration of 40 per cent byvolume.

• Other premixed solutions would be permitted for use if speciallylisted.

• When systems are drained, it is not typically necessary to draindrops, but consideration should be given to draining drops over36 inches if there is evidence that unacceptably highconcentration of antifreeze have collected.

A separate TIA 1016 was proposed for NFPA 25, which would haveallowed higher concentrations of antifreeze to continue for"unoccupied" building areas. It failed to obtain the necessary three-fourths committee support as some members concerned with thesubjectivity of determining normally unoccupied areas joined thoseopposed to any restrictions on antifreeze in existing systems.

Changes in the 2010 National Building Code In December of 2010 the National Model Codes were released to thepublic for purchase. I have had a chance to review the 2010 NationalBuilding Code and highlight some of the key technical changes thataffect the Fire Sprinkler Industry. In order to keep this update at amanageable level I have not captured every technical change in theNational Building Code. I would recommend you all to review thenew 2010 National Model Codes to make yourselves aware of all ofthe technical changes.

National Building Code - Part 3One of the significant changes is a revision to define Group BOccupancies. There are now three Group B Divisions;

• B-1 -Detention Occupancies• B-2 -Treatment Occupancies• B-3 -Care Occupancies

For more information please see Table 3.1.2.2

Convalescent and Children Custodial HomesThe new code will allow Convalescent and Children Custodial Homesto be permitted to be classified as a residential occupancy providedthat occupants are ambulatory and live as a single housekeeping unitin a suite with sleeping accommodation for not more than 10 persons. For more information please see 3.1.2.5

3.2.3 - Spatial Separation and ExposureProtectionMany Part 3 Buildings that are spaced closely together will now havemore stringent requirements on Spatial Separation and ExposureProtection. More stringent requirements are now implementedregarding limiting distance used, Maximum Concentrated Area ofUnprotected Openings, and changes to Minimum ConstructionRequirements for Exposing Building's. It is important to note thatthere are some relaxations in the current code regarding SpatialSeparation and Exposure Protection if the building is sprinkleredthroughout. For more information please see 3.2.3. thru 3.2.3.9.

Commissioning of Life Safety and Fire ProtectionSystemsA new provision was introduced into the code that ensures that allintegrated life safety systems must perform as a whole and theproper orientation and inter-relationship between the systems. For more information please see 3.2.4.6.

Electrical Supervision of Fire PumpsA new sentence was introduced to help clarify and mandate that aFire Pump shall be electrically supervised as stated in NFPA 20"Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection". Please see 3.2.4.10. for more information.

National Building Code - Part 9

Commissioning of Life Safety and Fire ProtectionSystemsA new provision was introduced into the code that ensures that allintegrated life safety systems must perform as a whole and theproper orientation and inter-relationship between the systems. For more information please see 9.10.1.2.

Limiting Distance and Fire Department ResponseNew language has been introduced to try and make it easier tocomply and enforce the limiting distance based on Fire DepartmentResponse. The new language now requires a limiting distance equalto half the actual limiting distance used where; the time from receiptof notification of a fire by the fire department until the first firedepartment vehicle arrives at the building exceeds 10 min in 10 percent or more of all calls to the building. For more information Please see 9.10.14.3 for more information.

Openings in Exposing Building FaceNew language has been introduced that is now more stringent insome areas on the maximum openings of exposing building face. Please note that the current code allows for greater areas of exposedbuilding face when the building is sprinklered. For more information please see 9.10.14.4.

Construction of Exposing Building FaceNew technical changes have been introduced that now require theuse of more non-combustible cladding in some examples and alsolimits the maximum area of unprotected openings in exposed buildingfaces. The current code does allow a relaxation to use combustiblecladding in some scenario's and also allow an increased maximumarea of unprotected opening when the building is sprinklered. For more information please see 9.10.14.5.

In 2010 we all experienced a change in our traditional expectations ofour industry. Man hours didn't follow conventional trends and in manyprovinces we managed to hold on to the man hours we experienced in2009. This was somewhat of a surprise given the National forecastwe were all exposed to in the first quarter of 2010, which was veryreserved. The National trend changed from a dependence onInstitutional work to an increase in Commercial and Industrial starts. This is welcome news as the Infrastructure money while extended fromMarch 2011 to October 2011 will soon come to an end and privatesector spending will have to pick up the slack. These indicators seemto suggest that 2011 should remain consistently level with 2010 andthat we could expect some increases in 2012 and on.

The CASA web site has been a focus this year and we have struggledto get it on track due to hosting problems. We have retained a newhosting firm and we are working quickly to get everything live andupdated for our members. It has been a long road but I believe that inthe end it will all be worth it and we will have a far more effective toolfor our membership.

Last year I was able to present to the technical committee of theCanadian Home Builders. This presentation led to an invitation topresent to the Alberta Home Builders in four cities. These presentationsled to a meeting in Lethbridge where for the first time we had Homebuilders, Building Officials, Water Officials, Fire Officials and ourorganization, at the table for meetings surrounding the advancementof residential fire sprinkler use in their community. These meetingshave led to follow up meetings for 2011 and I believe that for the firsttime we will take a step forward without having to take two back. Please follow this story in Jamie McKenzie's, Western Regional reportsand my National Marketing reports throughout 2011.

In 2011, we will re-establish the Canadian arm of the Home FireSprinkler Coalition with groups in the West, East and Ontario. The roleof the coalition will be to educate the public on the benefits of firesprinklers and create allegiances with various key communitystakeholders. These stake holders can then promote the benefits of firesprinklers to their respective industries and through this we effectivelyspread accurate information. The first meeting in each communityshould occur prior to September, 2011.

As part of the expanded awareness of fire sprinkler technology we willbe attending several community trade shows this year, including theCanadian Injury Prevention Conference where we will be presentingthe concept of fire sprinklers being the most effective fire injuryprevention device available today. This group is made up of doctorsand injury prevention specialists from across the country, whom arefocused on reducing injuries and deaths in Canada. Our productsclearly accomplish that goal and their support would contribute to theadvancement of the use of fire sprinklers.

We will continue to establish a strong relationship with our friends inthe Fire Service and attend the Annual Canadian Association of FireChiefs Conference in Calgary, 2011. These groups have been thebiggest supporters of fire sprinklers in the past and they continue topromote the use of fire sprinklers. The unions on the other hand havenot been proponents in Canada and we are arranging meetings with theInternational Association of Fire Fighters and their Canadian leaders todiscuss the issues that the fire fighters have. It is clear that there is aconcern over staffing, however, the modern fire service is an all hazardresponse service, and personnel is required to fulfill theserequirements. Our goal will be to provide the Association with thebenefits fire sprinklers provide to fire fighter safety and move forwardwith an amicable direction.

At this year's Annual Conference, CASA will celebrate its 50thAnniversary in Toronto. The dates are June 3 through June 7, at OneKing West hotel.

One King West is a Heritage building that was first home to Michie &Co. Grocers & Wine Merchants in the mid 1800's. In 1879 theprestigious location became home to the Dominion Bank, it wouldremain the Dominion bank for 126 years. This historic building nowboasts an adjacent hotel/residence property that is connected throughthe lobby, and the previous bank facilities have become the event spacefor the hotel. A very appropriate historic property for CASA to celebrateits fiftieth anniversary. Mark your calendars, and join us for thisprestigious event.

Happy New Year! I'm Jamie McKenzie; one of my new hats forCASA is to step in the role of the Western Regional Manager. I havebig shoes to fill with Dan's retirement. Over the past twenty or soyears Dan has been a strong mentor/tutor during my career withSimplexGrinnell. He installed and re-enforced his strong workethic, industry knowledge and respected management style.Always available, always a positive approach, always a pleasure towork and play beside. A Sprinkler Fitter by trade with over 35 yearsin the industry, 28 years as a member of local union 170. Duringmy 30 years with SimplexGrinnell my career led me from a service"on - call" van, to a road super, and up the ranks to various Sr.Managements positions. I've sat as a management trustee onLocal 170's Health & Welfare Board for the past 10 years, the BCdirector on CASA's Board of Directors and on the BC JTAC for thepast 3 years. I'm looking forward to the challenges we'll tackleand face together and the new friendships.

Western Canada has a resource driven economy. Althoughdifferences exist among the four western provinces in terms ofeconomic structures, on key similarity is prevalent: economicperformances in these regions are heavily dependent oncommodities and natural resources, which include agriculture, forestry, mining and oil and gas. The West's economic output fromthe resource sector accounts for a much higher component of thetotal GDP, compared to the rest of the country. Over the long term, diversification of the western economy is the key to sustainedeconomic success. A number of structural issues need to beaddressed to ensure a more resilient western economy, including:

• Ongoing reliance on the resource sector and exposure tovolatile commodity markets.

• Low business expenditures on research and development(R&D) resulting in fewer technologies being commercialized.

• Lack of access to early stage capital to facilitate companystart-up and growth.

• Need for improvements in the area of business productivityand competitiveness.

• Larger proportion of SMEs, but fewer who export, andresearch indicates exporters outperform non-exports.

• The aging population and workforce, and.

• Low participation rate of Aboriginal labour force.

Addressing these issues is vital to ensuring a more competitiveand diversified economy in the West in the long run.

In British Columbia, the forestry Industry is at the forefront of theeconomic landscape. In Alberta, oil and gas production dominatesthe province's economy. Saskatchewan's mix of potash mining, oil extraction, and agriculture industries lead its growth. Manitoba'swide range of mining, agricultural and manufacturing productsform its economic foundation.

Western Canada's economy is also largely dependent on trade, with approximately one third of its total GDP derived from exports. The largest trading partner is the US, accounting for about 80 percent of the region's total exports.

Strong economic growth has created tremendous opportunities forindustries such as manufacturing, industrial and residentialconstruction, science and technology innovation, and servicesthroughout the regions. • The West's population has been growing faster than thepopulation in the rest of the country

• BC and Alberta have been growing much faster thanSaskatchewan and Manitoba

• A strong economy has helped reverse the shrinking ofSaskatchewan's population that was happening in theearly part of the 2000s

• The West, like the rest of Canada, is aging. Over 1 in 10western Canadians are 65 years of age or over

This trend will have profound implications for Western societyas the aging of the population increases demand for productsand services tailored to seniors. Major public policy areas suchas health care, housing and income support will feel the effectsof an older population.

Happy New Year. 2010 in Ontario was unconventional to say the least. While we did not experience a rebound in the industry we did

manage to maintain our numbers from 2009, which was a surpriseconsidering the soft forecasts we were all exposed to earlier in theyear. Employment in Ontario remained flat, as well as, didconstruction starts. There was however, a shift over the year inconstruction from institutional to commercial and industrial. Thesechanges seem to grow as we worked our way through the lastquarter.

The Building Code changes requiring residential fire sprinklers in allnew high-rise construction also added some work to the Ontariomarket. A very competitive market, but a growing one indeed. Manybuilders chose to sprinkler buildings that may not have requiredsprinklers, in an effort to maintain product features, as sprinkleredbuildings started to go on sale. This was smart marketing on thedeveloper's part and has begun to help contractors in Ontario.

The once dream of compulsory certification, moved two steps closerin 2010 with approval of the Ontario College of Trades and theprovinces hosting of public input sessions on criteria. At this point, the college has placed a job call for staff and for members of thethree boards. We have encouraged all members to apply andparticipate in the future of trade work in Ontario.

A strong partnership with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs grewmore resilient and stronger over 2010. We worked closely with theAssociation on a documentary called The Burning Question on CBC.This documentary focused on why there were no fire sprinkler retrofitrequirements for care facilities in the province and given the numberof fatalities we have experienced when Ontarians could expect thislegislation. Still an unanswered question, but the province has movedto a public input model addressing fire sprinklers in care facilities andhopefully we will see change in the second quarter of 2011.

On the single family residential front, we have attempted to work withthe Ontario Home Builders Association. We were invited to severalmeetings with the organization over the course of the year with theOntario Association of Fire Chiefs. These meetings did not producemuch in the way of progress, but we did get to talk. Our hope is to

expand on these meetings in 2011 and develop some co-operativestrategies that could help to advance fire sprinklers in single familyhomes.

In 2010 we re-established the Canadian Home Fire SprinklerCoalition. The first meeting is scheduled for May in the Ontario region.Following this meeting, we will be looking to facilitate meetings inthe East and the West. The Ontario meeting group will consist of adoctor from the Burn Unit at the Hospital for Sick Children, the fireservice, members of the injury prevention community, home builders, and members from our industry. The goal of this group will be toeducate each member's respective association/group and spreadvaluable information on the benefits of residential fire sprinklers.

In an effort to reach out to the public in respect to residentialsprinklers, the ORG hosted a booth at the National Women's show inToronto. The show boasts an attendance of 38,000 women over thethree days. There was rarely a quiet moment in the booth and we hadmany encouraging dialogues with show attendees. We will beexamining this show again and deciding on our participation in thenear future.

Ontario is proud to host this year's Annual Conference, whichpromises to be an exciting event. I would like to extend a welcometo all of our contractors from across Canada and encourage you tojoin us here in Toronto, in June, for CASA's 50th Anniversary.

Atlantic Regional GroupPlans for the 2011 Atlantic Design Symposium are well under way.The date is Tuesday, May 17, 2011. It will be held in Moncton, NewBrunswick at the Hampton Inn and Suites, which is located at 700Mapleton Rd. (506 855-4819). For further information andregistration you can contact Joe Oliver @ 902-468-9500 or JoeYoung @ 902-852-2208. There are a limited number of seats soact early.

As published in the January QR, it was noted that there was a spikein fire related deaths in Atlantic Canada in 2010. There were 33which are up from 16 in 2009. Fire deaths in Nova Scotia went upfrom 8 to 9, but the figures went up from two to 11 in Newfoundland& Labrador, six to 10 in New Brunswick and zero to three in PrinceEdward Island. These figures are appalling as most or all may havebeen preventable with early warning system as working smokedetectors and/or early suppression such as fire sprinkler systems. The majority of those deaths occurred in residences that did nothave a working smoke detector. These facts are from the Red Cross.

The Top Tech competition will take place at the NFSA Annualseminar and exhibition in Baltimore, Maryland, April 7-8, 2011. TheCanadian teams, have in the past, done very well in thiscompetition, so watch for the dates for qualifying rounds for theTop Tech competition.

Man hours are remaining steady in Newfoundland with NewBrunswick having a slight increase and Nova Scotia is down a bit.

Our next Regional meeting will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick,on Wednesday, March 9th.

When they arrived in Newfoundland, they went to anInsurance agency to see how much it would cost to insurethe wooden leg.

The agent looked it up on the computer and said to thecouple, $39.00.

The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheaphere in Newfoundland to insure, because it cost him$2000.00 in BC!

Jay Heller, vice president of LynCar Products Ltd. undertook a homerenovation this past winter, and as part of this renovation includeda residential sprinkler system.

LynCar Products Ltd recently deepened its management team whenlong time President Clive Davies welcomed Hart and Jay Heller aspartners. These brothers, who will each serve as Executive VicePresidents of LynCar, bring many years of business experience andwill add knowledge and depth to the future growth of LynCar.

LynCar is well known in Canada as a leading supplier of sprinklerspecialty items. The company's catalogue boasts some 1,500

items and includeseverything a sprinklercontractor needs to fabricateand install a fire sprinklersystem, other than pipe andfittings. LynCar knows thefire protection industry verywell, having participated inthe market since 1985. Hartand Jay Heller hope tosupplement this deep baseof industry knowledge withtheir own broad businessexperience.

Jay Heller spent 11 years as a senior officer of a private equity andinvestment management firm, and was a corporate lawyer at alarge downtown Toronto law firm. He holds degrees in law andeconomics from the University of Toronto.

Hart Heller is an industrial engineer who has spent the past 15 yearsworking in finance, business consulting and engineering. He is alsoinvolved in all finance related collective bargaining negotiations forthe NHL Players' Association. He holds an engineering degree fromthe University of Toronto and an MBA from Harvard BusinessSchool.

As Hart and Jay conducted their due diligence of LynCar and of thebroader fire protection industry prior to joining LynCar, theydeveloped an appreciation of the tremendous increase in personalsafety that a sprinkler system can provide. In Jay's case, thiseducation was very timely, as he was in the process of renovatinga new family home. Shortly after joining LynCar, Jay began toinvestigate the possibility of including a residential sprinkler systemas part of the renovation.

LynCar contacted CASA member Classic Fire Protection, to see if

they could assist Jay inthis project, and RickBerwick was only toohappy to help. Foundedin 1988, Classic FireProtection is one ofCanada's leading firesprinkler contractorsand a leading memberof CASA. Classic has afull team of engineersand a fleet of service trucks, to service new installations, servicecalls and inspections - including for residential customers.

Jay's house is located in central Toronto and is roughly 100 yearsold. Jay and his wife purchased the house in 2009, with the goalof completing a "full gut" renovation. The 3,500 sq ft house neededmajor repairs including new kitchen and bathrooms, mechanicalsystems, roof repairs, stuccoing, new floors and drywall. Added tothis list, Jay wished to add a fire sprinkler system!

Jay first had to convince his wife Anita that their new home wouldnot have unsightly heads sticking out of the ceilings, and of courseshe was worried that they would leak and cause damages. She wasalso worried that ALL the heads would activate at once and ruinthe newly renovated house! She needed a lesson on the safetybenefits that a residential sprinkler system would provide, and hasprobably seen too many movies - it did not help that she used to bea film reviewer! However, with a little education Anita quickly goton board and supported the home sprinkler initiative.

The general contractor for the renovation, Celcon GeneralContractors, was excited about the opportunity to participate in aresidential sprinkler job. Despite over 20 years experience inrenovating homes, Celcon's President, Chuck Lunau, had notpreviously had a chance to work on a home sprinkler system. Butunlike many general contractors, he understood the safety benefitsof a sprinkler system and welcomed the opportunity to work witha sophisticated sub-contractor like Classic. Chuck is hopeful thatthis experience will help him to convince future clients of thebenefits of installing a fire sprinkler system to their homes, whichwill both help his business and also the safety of his customers.

Once everyone was on board, Steve Poland of Classic Fire

Protection arrived at the job site with his team and the installationbegan. Steve communicated well with LynCar and Jay's family tomake sure everything progressed smoothly within the context ofthe major home renovation.

To complete the job, Classic Fire Protection is using:

• Blazemaster™ Piping • Globe Fire Protection Sprinkler Heads • Potter Equipment• LynCar Accessories • Conbraco Backflow

This installation by Jay Heller of LynCar Products, with the help ofClassic Fire, is a good example of how the industry is willing to "putits money where its mouth is" and show leadership in the emergingarea of home fire sprinkler systems. When any participant in the fireprotection industry, be it a contractor, supplier or engineer, has anopportunity to buy or renovate a home, please take the extra stepand insist on a residential sprinkler system for you and your family.Jay Heller did and now his home is fire safe!
