Welcome to Week 5 of Term 1! On Thursday 13 December 2018, the NSW government announced that in response to the recommendations made by a review the use of mobile devices during school hours will be restricted in NSW public primary schools, with the option for high schools to pursue the approach that best suits their circumstances and the needs of their community. The NSW Government is currently considering the other recommendations and findings made in the review report. The school will soon commence discussions with the school community on a new policy which includes the use of mobile phones, smart watches and tablets, with the aim of cre-ating a policy that is supported by the school’s P&C and Student Repre-sentative Council and endorsed by teachers and parents. It is important to note that some students with a disability rely on the use of a mobile device and may be exempt from the restriction. School staff will continue to consult with the student, parents and carers to ensure the personalised learning and support needs of students with disability and additional learning and support needs are addressed. We believe that this is a posi-tive move that will help provide a safer environment for our students and our concerns that phones in particular have become a constant distrac-tion for many students in our society, which can lead to classroom and playground disruption for teachers and other students. Lions Club Youth of the Year Last Thursday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Coleambally Lions Club Youth of the Year Public Speaking event. Three wonderful Year 12 students competed in this year’s event, which included an impromptu answer section and a 5 minute prepared speech for each student. Mark Jay (Somalia), Danielle Mannes (Victor Chang) and Natalia Burgess (War on Waste) delivered outstanding presentations during their prepared speeches. Congratulations to Natalia Burgess for winning the Coleambally Youth of the Year, Natalia will now represent the town at the regional event. CIT/Neoen White Card Today staff from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) arrived to deliver work competencies to 12 students from Coleambally Central School and Tirkandi Inaburra. This is a fantastic partnership which we hope will continue in the future to deliver improved outcomes for our students.

PSSA and CHS Swimming Students will be involved in two regional sporting events over the next two weeks. This Thursday, 28 February 2019 the Griffith PSSA Zone Swimming Carnival will be held in Griffith, with a strong CCS Team travelling to Griffith with Mr Turtle and Mrs Lyons. Next week on Monday, 4 March 2019 the Riverina CHS Swimming Carnival will be held in Leeton. Good luck to all competitors. Bell Shakespeare Company In exciting news, Miss Alyse Cox, Head Teacher English/History, has been accepted into the Bell Shakespeare Com-pany Regional Teacher Mentorship, and is one of only thirty recipients Australia wide of the 2019 Regional Teach-er Mentorship. Miss Cox will be joining the Bell Shakespeare HQ in Sydney this Friday for 5 days and again in March, followed by support and mentoring for the duration of 2019. This is a wonderful opportunity for Miss Cox which should benefit our students and the study of Shakespeare in English. Technology Program The school executive is currently planning the implementation of a whole school Technology Upgrade Program, with a substantial investment from school finances to undertake this program. Further information will be provid-ed in the coming weeks as stages of the program are developed. Ambulance Cover Parents and carers should be aware that Coleambally Central School has full ambulance insurance cover for all students when at school or on any school supervised activity, for example excursions and sporting activities. This means that in the event of an ambulance being called there will be no charge to the school or parents. Finally…. Our door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. We need to know if we are not doing something right, but I also need to know that you trust our motives and intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. Until next week,
