MAYOR’S
CORNER
your patience and your help in making
the new bridge a reality.
We are also finalizing plans for our an-
nual 9/11 Memorial Service. I hope
you’ll join us at the Heroes Memorial
as we remember those 3,000 Americans
who lost their lives on that terrible day
11 years ago.
There are a few items the Board will be
considering this month regarding com-
mercial vehicles parked in residential
areas of the City. If you regularly drive
such a vehicle home, I encourage you
to review the proposed changes and let
your Aldermen know your thoughts. I
think everyone wants to make sure we
get this right the first time.
At last month’s Board meeting, the
Board voted unanimously not to pay
our membership dues to the St. Louis
County Municipal League. This is in
response to the League taking a posi-
tion on the sales tax redistribution that
would have cost Fenton even more
money that we are losing today. It is
the Board’s view that the League, as an
organization, should be neutral on this
issue, and should stick to its stated pur-
pose “to provide a vehicle for coopera-
tion in formulating and promoting mu-
nicipal policy at the federal, state, and
local levels for the purpose of enhanc-
ing the welfare and common destiny of
municipalities and citizens.” The
League’s proposal would have harmed
the overwhelming majority of cities in
St. Louis County by reducing their
revenues. I agree wholeheartedly with
the Board; there is no reason for us to
continue to support an organization that
works against the best interests of its
members.
Mayor Dennis Hancock
August 2012August 2012August 2012August 2012
Plans are being finalized for the Fen-
ton Days celebration on August 25.
There will be lots to do for the whole
family, and the day will end with a
terrific fireworks display. What a
great way to celebrate the 175th anni-
versary of our City’s founding, along
with the dedication of the new
Gravois Road Bridge. I especially
want to thank our sponsors for the
event:
Founders Level:
• Dobbs Tire and Auto Centers
• Fabick CAT
• G. J. Grewe, Inc.
• Jim Butler Chevrolet
• Maritz
• SSM St. Clare Health Center
Platinum Level:
• UniGroup
Gold Level:
• Grand Rental Station
Silver Level:
• ABF Security
• Andre’s Banquet Facilities and
Catering
Speaking of the bridge, work is
quickly wrapping up. And while the
work will be substantially completed
before the 25th, there will still be
some final seeding and sodding to be
done in September. But we’ve come
a long way from that day 5 years ago
when the decision was made to close
the old bridge due to safety concerns.
Thanks to everyone involved for
PENDING LEGISLATION
The Board of Aldermen is consider-
ing changes regarding the operation
and parking of commercial vehicles,
recreation vehicles and trailers
within residential areas.
The following are the proposed
changes to the Fenton Municipal
Code:
• Define commercial vehicles as
those with a licensed weight in
excess of 24,000 pounds, in lieu
of the existing restriction of 6,000
pounds.
• Restrict the operation, parking,
keeping or storing of commercial
vehicles (licensed in excess of
24,000 pounds) on any street or
highway, except when in the proc-
ess of loading or unloading.
• Regulate the parking, keeping and
storing of trailers and recreational
vehicles/ equipment within the
City.
◦ Allow for trailers and recrea-
tional vehicles/equipment to
be parked within the street
while loading and unloading;
and
◦ Require all trailers and recrea-
tional vehicles/equipment lo-
cated on property be located
on a paved surface.
Final consideration of these ordi-
nances will be given at the August
23, 2012 Board of Aldermen meet-
ing.
