To discuss collaboration efforts between Texas Woman’s University (TWU) and Center for Community Development and Empowerment (CCDE), a faith-based organization, in prioritizing health needs that affect the Eastside community in Wichita Falls, TX.

Began working together in year 2000 at Shalom Zone Ministries. Legally formed in July 2007.

“ “The man who owns this place didn’t sell food or gas. What he did sell was products to make meth. He had cases upon cases of Sudofed and other things to make crystal meth.” [Source: 50-year old widow.



“This is a negative to me. It’s the OK Liquor Store, and it’s not ok. It’s the only viable business on the Eastside… no grocery store, no 7-11 or gas station. The only, quickest thing you can go and get right away on the Eastside is liquor [Source: 45-year old widow].

After school and summer program activities

High school retention, TAKS tutoring, GED preparation, college tours

Comprehensive sex education, family planning and parenting programs

Heart disease and diabetes education programs and activities

Smoking cessation and asthma management education

Job and entrepreneur skills training

Attend city council and school district meetings; voter registrations drives

Adopt-A-Street, book clubs, block parties

Eastside Community suffers from:

Negative social health determinants– Feelings of hopelessness– Depression– Distrust among city leaders and officials

Physical health determinants– Stress– Cancer

Conclusion– Implement culturally competent, evidence-based health

intervention strategies – Involve Eastside community members in planning and marketing
